You asked the right question: why couldn’t we preload it ahead of launch? They’ve done that with many releases. Honestly, I was very skeptical, and still am, about the initial quality of this product since they only made available an alpha version for a couple of days, so close to launch. A game like this should have given players running tastes of it 6 months ago, then smaller bits of beta until now. Too much was being kept hidden. Glad I kept my 2020 to continue to enjoy until VR Guy tells me otherwise.
I was able to download and install without issue(90 minutes from start to world map) . I restarted my computer after completing the Character and settings config and have not been able to get back in. I really dont understand the lack of aircraft. Kinda glad I did not buy it yet... Would have been really frustrated to have bought it and not been able to use it yet. Still deciding which version anyway.
Took me 4 hours of waiting in a queue to get the sim to finally load to the main screen. Decided to close it and see if it would instantly load the next time I open it (because you'd expect it to cache the data on disk to keep from having to re-download it each time). Nope, right back into a queue again waiting for hours. This is so horribly architected. They need to massively scale up their server infrastructure if they want the sim to operate this way with this streaming data. When I want to fly I want to fly, I don't want to be spending hours staring at Loading Screen Simulator 2024.
This is the issue moving forward. People moan that their hard drives are full but then moan when they go down the streaning route. The best approach would be to give people the option to stream or download. I have no issue downloading 200gb or more of map data to start the game and then stream the rest if needed
It amazes me how soo many people thought this would be anything different than a disaster day. The past 4 years really haven't taught people ANYTHING. Asobo and MS decide a worldwide release, simultaneously, and the servers are bricked...every release and update of MS2020 has behaved exactly the same, a few lucky people manage to get thru, and an extremely large volume, face server and download issues. Lord knows how things will be in a few weeks when most have at least got it downloaded...especially as most data is designed to be server based and will stream just the areas, you're flying around...ok...so in theory that's great, but looks like the MS servers cannot handle intense loading. Someone in the comments also said crazy to think they only released an alpha build a few weeks ago.... well looks like this release today is nothing more than a beta that's testing the demands placed on their network.... poor show Microsoft and asobo...
I was able to play the career mode for a while and was 3 lessons away for the PPL. Went out for a quick diligence and when I came back, was unable to open it at all. What a disaster for real.
MSFS 2020 opened to a terrible launch with continuous crashes, bugs, large patch downloads and so on. MSFS 2024, despite supposedly having learned as much as they did in the last 4 years, has regressed to the point that in this release, it's even worse. With 2020's issues, in the very least, we can all remember that we got to play it on day 1.
I was able to download and get into the game after 1 hour. But there was only ONE plane available to fly, the P-51 Mustang. It does look great and ran smoothly, once I setup all the key bindings and mapped the buttons on my joystick. I made the mistake of exiting after a while. When I tried to launch the sim again I got the same screen you're seeing in the video.
I kept 2020 installed, tried 24 twice for about 30 mins, gave up, took a great FENIX flight into EGLL and kept an eye on the masses having a nervous breakdown on the internet.
Yes, spent $200 to be put in a queue like I'm waiting to play a match in an online game. Simply put....WTF? After several hours, I finally got to pick an aircraft and an airport, only to have it get stuck loading the airport. And according to Steam I've played the game 10 hours! Even though I've never seen the game. I don't care how many copies it sold, they should have been ready, or launch it first in Europe and the next day in the USA. A multi-billion dollar company should have plenty of resources and no excuses.
Absolutely agree with you mate. That screen you’re showing mirrors mine exactly. Surely they could have seen this coming? This has been a common theme with games over the past couple of years, they need to be more prepared. Really hope this gets sorted overnight. Shambles.
Wow. Why am I not surprised? When Microsoft insisted that they wanted most of this game to be accessed online, my first thought was, "Oh-oh". Sorry to see that my response wasn't the wrong one.
I've been gaming long enough to know "release day" is synonymous with "get shit on". Could just be a shart, a huge turd or full blow violent diarrhea... but it's always some form of shit one way or another. I always wait 24/48 hours so I don't have to go through what you're going through. Wasted hours of life, frustration, a bad first impression, all for nothing. You and I will both be playing tomorrow after they work out the kinks, but I'll have all my hair.
I'm very disappointed, I've given up for the night, it beggars belief that they didn't anticipate the volumes of people who would try to access the sim on its release day. Lack of updates to the community about what's going wrong and what they are doing to correct it, apart from vague post on X. I'll be trying again tommorow but I won't hold out much hope that issues with servers won't happen again.
Unbelievable because Microsoft has some of the largest data centers all over the world . Inexcusable I'm waiting to buy for a month or so until this gets sorted.
If you get in, the server overload is preventing gameplay. Not that I can get in. It was 97% after 3 hours. After waiting 3 hours, it was still 97%. I rebooted and ran Xbox repair-now I get the queue for about 10 minutes and then an error code that the Zen desk doesn't recognise.
Hi Steve, I am also disgusted by the quality of Microsoft's launch of 2024. To start with, the download came down as expected from the Xbox app. It was once the sim launched and loaded "whatever" to load up the menu that caused the most frustration. First time it took ages to get to 17% then opened up to allow me to make some config changes and pick an airport and plane but there were only a very few planes to pick from (I purchased the Aviator's edition) I was looking for the C172, but it didn't exist. I decided to exit the sim and reload but when I tired, it took the same long period of time to get to 17% but continued up to 97%, which took so long I decided to terminate the application. After which, it wouldn't download any data. Later on I retired and received the Too Many People logging in message. It's just not good enough. I paid a premium price and patiently waited for the launch date and am told to wait a few days.
Two hours later and still in the same mess. What a complete indictment of the whole "everything as a service" model. Streaming the scenery is one thing, streaming virtually everything is clearly something else. Good luck everyone.
Not able to get in, tried a couple of times. So glad I did not book a days leave. I do have this Friday booked off to spend the day finding my way about, sort configuration and have some fun. Let's hope its sorted by then.
You would think that Microsoft would have known something like this would happen. But they have peoples money, what do they care if they have to wait!!!!!
Saw all the comments about the disastrous launch and havent bothered even trying to download it yet. I am also extremely concerned about 2024 being even more reliant on the microsoft servers with landscape data steamed as you fly; weve seen with MSFS 2020 how crap their servers can be, with disconnects during flight and terrible download speeds at times. Not exactly a launch to inspire confidence!
Just Mr. Jörg Neumann walking around with his Headset there and his steelcase special edition :D looking into the sky and wondering where everyone is?? :D
I got in, around 9pm GMT, i had the pc hooked up to the tv in the living room, so i had to play with the controller. Started career mode and did the exact same training like in 2020 (sedona airport, "a mile of highway vs a mile of runway"...a bit dissapointing) getting ready for the PPL, wanted to move upstairs where my yoke is.. and of course never got back in again. if you get in, never ever shut de game down again! :D
I managed to go into the avatar customization page, but my avatar was headless (but still wearing glasses). It caused me to laugh out loud. I exited and there was no way to get into the sim again. The situation is probably worse that you think off - pre download would not fix it. The sim client is now really small, majority of content is streamed, even the avatar's heads. So the server infrastructure is not only unable to handle the initial download it's unable to stream for a normal sim use.
I'm wondering if Microsoft bit off more than they could chew and find out that this will be much more demanding on the servers than they anticipated over all?
The issue as well is that assets are streaming and not stored locally so the servers need to be good in perpetuity actually, so this is a real bad sign
Download took ages, started up, requested restart for library, did it and - that was it, Login queue... This is really much worse than I suggested. I was afraid of it not beeing completely playable today, just to take a glimpse, but this... inacceptable.
I managed to do like a 3 training missions before I got stuck on login queue. This 3 missions took me 2-3 hours to complete, I’ve been restarting the game almost every loading screen to get further. 2/3 cases, the textures was missing and my plane was suspended in the air to be destroyed in 10 seconds. The velocity one key assignments is a joke, I needed to manually change reverse axis because the mixture is set “backwards” so the engine is killed when spawning in air, and the elevator on yoke was on the other way around too. Other than that it was ok, but the graphics was… mid. Like I was playing with 4K in the cockpit but half of that on the outside. Maybe because of the servers too - but right now, I’m just disappointed. I would rather download a 200GB file through the night or wait 8 hours compared to the US for launch than handle this shit.
the missing textures and falling into nothingness to crash in 10 seconds also happened to me... PLus the key assignments and joystick assignments are completely different from msfs2020 and there seems to be no easy to read overview available about what they are. i keep getting weird behavior from the plane and i just have to guess why.... I was expecting "imperfections" like in the AI and ATC - and perhaps a bit of a wait to load the game for the first time too. But well.. Considering to just fly my frustration off in MSFS2020 tomorrow instead.
@ The one thing I am pleased about is that they finally repaired a bug when a full yoke turn in cockpit would “freeze” halfway, going full only in external view. This was something awful as you are paying a lot of money for a supported yoke and it’s just ruined from the very basics. The controller options are different too - I wouldn’t mind, but when doing the first flight I needed to plug in my mouse because nobody explained how to activate a toolbar - it was in the next mission, so half of fight I was flying with gigantic ATC Communication window in the right center of my screen. I agree, key binding setup is a step back for me comparing to the 2020 - very counterintuitive. And I don’t quite understand “local ATC languages” option. I am playing in English as in 2020 my first language was messing with ATC voiceover - but I really don’t understand how this should work. When flying through 3 countries I should know 3 languages? I am not saying that change or something new is bad - but it should be properly explained. I am afraid that in fact, we will be doing the work that should be done by beta testers long time ago for the next few months.
It is a bad idea to put everything on servers in the first place. MS doesn’t realize that not everyone has a decent internet connection as they do(even if people are willing to pay more, the infrastructures are there). Now seeing their servers collapsing, I just wanna say: MS, you ask for it.
I managed to install it and after a long wait I got in. There were only 4 planes available in my Premium Deluxe version. So I tried the Cessna 172 for a few minutes. To be honest, I didn't notice much difference compared to MS2020, at least from a flying perspective (I'm using ultra settings). Then I tried to reboot, thinking that I could get the rest of the planes. Big mistake. I never got back in. Bad start so far!
So much for 2024. Back to 2020! I agree Microsoft had plenty of time and data to plan accordingly and they should refund us in some way for this cluster F of a release.
Simultaneous global launch. Saw it coming honestly. And from everything I've seen, even if the launch went smoothly, the game itself looks unfinished. I'll check back in 2025.
I got in once right when it launched. After doing a little in career mode I went to explore free flight and noticed I only had about 10 planes in the list (I have premium deluxe). Exited the game to see if it just needed to refresh something and have been met with this same queue screen ever since.
I preordered. I downloaded. I installed (tried) and waited. And waited. And waited. A couple of reboots and more waiting....I returned the game and asked for a refund before it timed out. I'll revisit MSFS2024 in six months or a year, once MSAsobo figure out how to make it work. For me it'll be MSFS 2025. But seriously, I think the game just isn't finished. Devs have been quiet for months....not a PEEP in the last few weeks before launch. I'm told the Devkit/SDK is in ALPHA??!! and a LOT of previous aircraft aren't compatible and devs were rushing to update assets for launch. In the meantime, congratulations to all the new beta testers who just bought and will help debug the game. You're doing the Lord's work for those of us who are content to wait until it's playable. ps: agreed on worst launch ever...when you highlight the streaming...and boast about the robust flexibility of Azure...and then the game crashes and servers are inaccessible, it's a disaster for more than just the game.
I’m sure things will improve but on launch day there is zero excuse for this. Microsoft own the entire Azure platform and could easily scale the FS24 servers to meet demand. It’s a conscious decision to throttle demand, I can’t believe this wasn’t anticipated. Given a large part of MSFS 2024 involves streaming live content to users, launch day does seem like a bit of an own goal.
I’m so glad that I’ve held back on purchasing msfs 2024 I just had a gut feeling about this. Steve I hope you get up and running soon looking forward to your review. 🤞

This is the issue moving forward. People moan that their hard drives are full but then moan when they go down the streaning route. The best approach would be to give people the option to stream or download. I have no issue downloading 200gb or more of map data to start the game and then stream the rest if needed
I'm worried for the future of MFS 2024 relying on servers like this. I was able to get it working and fly a bit at first, but now completely stuck.
I'm glad I didn't pre-order it! That's why I still appreciate X-Plane, it's a solid product that works locally.
This is why we don't want servers to play a game. The game plays like you're using it from a remote desktop client. What a shame.
The shortest but comprehensive launch review😂
I was able to play the career mode for a while and was 3 lessons away for the PPL. Went out for a quick diligence and when I came back, was unable to open it at all. What a disaster for real.
I made it in. Had to restart once but it has been a dream. I'm sure it'll get fixed ASAP.
If you don’t have all of your planes log in again and it will refresh your list.
Similar here. After spending a while in the settings / setup, I exited and can't get in since. Disappointed.
I kept 2020 installed, tried 24 twice for about 30 mins, gave up, took a great FENIX flight into EGLL and kept an eye on the masses having a nervous breakdown on the internet.
I got to 97% and it hung for over an hour. so I restarted it, and I was able to play. I'm pretty happy with the framerate.
Restarting it seems to help
This are Jörgs improved loading times 😂
Shambles.
He is not your mate dude !
Wow.
Why am I not surprised?
When Microsoft insisted that they wanted most of this game to be accessed online, my first thought was, "Oh-oh".
Sorry to see that my response wasn't the wrong one.
Oh, no. Not you as well! This has happened to everyone I know in the UK. I’ve noticed that in the USA they seem to be more likely to get it running.
Idk why people are crying, you’ve already got a fantastic simulator 😂
Microsoft is really going to take a hit for this disaster
Thats what happens when you make a sim mostly streamed. I think my msfs is like 350 gb, and this is 50 gb. Just let us download it, idc if its 1 tb.
I find it sus the amount of streamers getting on this game no problem
Two hours later and still in the same mess. What a complete indictment of the whole "everything as a service" model. Streaming the scenery is one thing, streaming virtually everything is clearly something else. Good luck everyone.
Just like the Tyson-Paul fight on Netflix 😂
This must be pissing a huge amount of people off.
Biggest FAIL in Microsoft Flight Simulator History! So disappointed and yet as expected.
Not able to get in, tried a couple of times. So glad I did not book a days leave. I do have this Friday booked off to spend the day finding my way about, sort configuration and have some fun. Let's hope its sorted by then.
People who played Microsoft Queue Simulator 2024 on launch should get some free planes
You would think that Microsoft would have known something like this would happen. But they have peoples money, what do they care if they have to wait!!!!!
Interestingly all the money from the buyers bank account to Microsoft managed to arrive successfully in time
Remember just buying a game, putting it into the slot and playing the fkn game without updates every 10mins!
at least his pockets are even more full of money now.
Made it to the FLY NOW but no further. You are correct... Osobo should be embarrassed, but they will be embarrassed all the way to the bank!
I knew this would happen. I don't intend to download MSFS2024 until January 2025.
Logging back in does refresh your plane list if that makes you feel better. Up to 42 planes now after logging in again
I've tried a few times, but I've got the same problem. Really looking forward to it when we can actually play!
The game is finished. The servers crashed, that is all.
Same here. I gave up and played Elite Dangerous for a few hours, tried again and it was exactly the same. Total disaster for MS!
Well, I have to wait on a replacement Crystal, so I probably won’t see it or MSFS24 until mid-December. Hopefully the dust will have settled.
