There's a good conversation to be had about that 10-15 age range and how ravenously one ends up playing freeware/shareware/emulators/flash games. I imagine it's more formative than is given credit.
That would be very cool, though very tricky to organise I bet! Would love to see it as a one-off though. If you're looking for Lets Play videos where the developers chat with the player, there's a series called 'Devs Play' on Double Fine's channel which is superb, especially the second season.
I had Jill of the Jungle as a kid. Played a fair bit of it. I remember seeing later games by Epic Megagames and being like "those were the Jill of the Jungle guys!"
I am so glad that this game actually exists and wasn't a figment of my imagination. Jill Saves the Prince was the first vidya game I played that wasn't DOS edutainment at school. Those noises, man, those noises... Hoping that someday Quintin sees the horrifying lizardmen enemies and the hell levels in JStP!
If you two ever rinse through your childhood games this is a perfect series for guest appearances I think. Would love to see what the friends of Cool Ghosts would bring to the table as well, because it's such a fantastic series already.
I have pretty strong memories of playing the shareware version of this a bunch as a kid. I still really like that the overworld/stage select area is kind of just a level in itself but sort of puzzly where the stages are actually in your way and sometimes it seems like you can try to get to different places. (I might have made it something more than it is in memory.)
Awww yis! I haven't thought about this game in years. I actually picked it up at Poundland when they were selling off a load of old DOS games. Played the hell out of it as a kid.
HELL YES I played Jill of the Jungle! And I guess her appearance really didn't impress upon me either because I definitely don't remember her looking like that. But I remember a bit where you like... turn into a bat or something...
I don't know what you mean by "good shout", but I guess I'm just not British? Either way, I, too, thought trying it out was a good idea, just to be clear.
I'm 99% sure from the usage i've seen that phrase used that it comes from "a good shout-out", which is an appreciation that the sentiment was positive :)
Did you ever play Vinyl Goddess From Mars? It was weirdly similar, just with better production values and more lovingly rendered butt-climbing. It was much more upfront with its perviness, in that tongue-in-cheek way where you wink at the camera every now and then to prove there's nothing sexist going on. Actually, the the main character used animation frames stolen from the Prince of Persia, which in a way is kind of progressive.
Wait, this was from Epic Megagames? Did it come out before or after Xargon, which seems almost identical? Edit: and now I've watched the whole thing and they do reference it.
Hi, it's me again. Remember you told me about the little ghost in my heart? Well it's taken me a while to get used to it, I hadn't known about it before, but now it's become a bit of a bitter thing. I'm very big and it is very small, and you only ever say hi to the little small. I get jealous and it makes fun of me. Are there any good boardgames for one player + a little heart ghost?
Cool Ghosts Rats! I thought for a second that all PCs back in the early 90s had the same obscure stuff on them. Thanks for the nostalgia trip with this!
I grew up through the DOS Shareware era, starting out with monochrome monitors and going from there. I can pretty safely say that most well remembered PC stuff of that era was *rubbish* and it just made me terribly jealous of all my console and Amiga-owning friends. The PC was a decade behind on platformers for ages. Fun fact: That legendarily bad Mega Man adaptation for DOS? Capcom hired that same team again to port Megaman X later.

Alex Hayden There IS a good conversation to have about this, and you'll hear it on Thursday on Daft Souls.
YEAAH-ehhh!
just throwing it out there; Don't Step On My Child would make a good series where you chat with developers while playing their game.
That would be very cool, though very tricky to organise I bet! Would love to see it as a one-off though.

The thing I remember most about this game is the music, which I'd say is still great today!
Man I loved this. Had the first episode shareware.
Those sounds are so clear to me still.
Jill of War

Yay, video out before podcast! I feel so informed.

When I was a kid I always thought that when you got a key the voices said "Girrrrl!".

Wow! What a throwback. Great upload.
i had a demo of this so i just played the first lvl over and over

HOLY SHIT I'm so old
I've got to say, I vastly prefer watching this before the podcast.
It was a good shout to switch the order around - thanks to all those who suggested it!

OMG the box art!
I really like these!
I also don't remember if this was my first game but it's in the maybe pile of em 🙌
please don't step on my child
Quinn's has old man smoker cough and it's hilarious sounding
Don't vape kids
Watching this game made me say the kind of 'Wow!' I use in Rocket League when someone does something unfathomably shit.
epic mega games? jazz jackrabbit 2??
I remember the day my dad brought home a shareware copy of this... this is definitely not as good as I remember. Lense of nostalgia and all that
We need some Commander Keen!
omg I used to play this with my friend when I was like 7. At the time I remember enjoying playing it though now it looks absolutely horrible lol

It's a bit Vaporwave really, isn't it?
It is!
I'm too lazy to watch the whole thing. Did you get to the parts where she turns into animals
No they just do the first few levels.

Matt, this is a bit of a longshot but...Monuments of Mars? Does that mean anything to you?
Sadly no.

My phone pinged with this just as I was watching the Witcher 3 Hyper Realistic 3D HD Edition video. Double Ghosts. Nice.
