Thanks for sharing your struggles with us, too. We Texan gardeners are a tenacious group who face more than our share of what "mother nature" sends our way. For some reason, she thinks we need to learn to garden in a pizza oven!!! I lost all of my heucheras, even after transplanting them to a shaded area. All three of my encore azaleas I planted this spring are fried to a crisp and a lost cause, along with all my marigolds that were in pots. I even lost some of my dianthus!! However, my Canna Lillys are doing well and blooming planted in the ground under my Crepe Myrtle trees to get some shade. It's such a disappointment when we lose a plant that took effort and money to plant. You look very pretty with your hair down and pretty sundress today hosting this video. Brace yourself for this week's 100+ temperatures!!!! Kudos to the cameraman, he does a fine job.
I’m in Texas 8b. We appreciate you sharing this. We’re all struggling around here. I realize it’s basically unavoidable but my heart doesn’t get it. We still have the hottest month of the year to go. Hang in there!! 110 heat index for the next few days and we know it rarely rains in August (at least in this area).
Same zone, and yes, was so glad to see this. My cannas and limelights are in the same situation! I'm already over this heat and we still have such a looooooong way to go!
Thank-you for showing everything! This time of year I start to wonder why I planted so much (Everything is handwatered) and plants start to struggle. Thanks to you I learned that it's okay to cut back my strugglers. That has actually really helped!!! Great tour!
Amanda, thank you for sharing “the bad too. This gives all of us struggling in the heat some validation, and more importantly, hope and ideas on what else to try. Your garden looks so lovely! What a gift you share with us. And special thanks to your camera man! You look great all dressed up for us but I also really love you keep it real for most videos!
I've had an issue with my Bubblegum petunias collapsing, seemingly overnight. I had a row of about 8 petunias that were HUGE and gorgeous! About the end of June, maybe the first week in July, one died over the course of about 2-3 days. Then another down the row a few days later--never consecutive plants. Bubblegum planted close by in pots were fine. This same thing happened last year. My current theory is that I have phytophthora (mold) in that flowerbed that is "activated" with the heat. I'm going to plant some other annuals in that bed for a few years and see if this theory pans out. I found an article from U of NC that tested several plant species for tolerance to phytophthora, and one was angelonia. I'm going to plant this bed with angelonia for a few years and see how it goes. Thanks for showing us your July garden. I'm in Mesquite, so I'm so glad to see what is working for you (and what's not--no schadenfreude intended :-)
First up: my Cannas (I'm in zone 9b), much hotter - they did well with morning/early afternoon sun and a few waterings per week. That west side heat may be too much especially on the brick ANdif it's potted with the plumbagp, that too, may not be good idea either, considering plumbago doesn't like a lot of water but Cannas do. Hope that helps. Next, thank you so much for showing the “plants not doing well” in the garden. We gardeners should always keep journals and make notes as the garden progresses through all types of weather elements. That helps us with the coming season.
I’ve had canna’s on the ground and usually don’t get much attention from me but they do like consistent watering. They do better when the temperatures go under 100. I also have some in their nursery pot(never got around to plant them), and they are flowering! I do water them daily and are in more part sun/part shade. I’m surprised they’re flowering in that location. Sorry to hear about your limelight hydrangeas. I’m counting the days until the end of August. This heat is a bit much. You looked lovely in your dress and hair down. But it’s ok to wear a ponytail in this heat. We totally get it! 😅
Here in zone 7B, N MS, we're going through our first extended heatwave with no rain, so all I can do is run around with the water hose; no time for any other gardening. I bought the Oklahoma cannas, too, and they bloom looks like yours, nothing like the pretty salmon-colored bloom on the package and photos on Google. So I'm letting it live this summer, but it's compost at the end of the season. However, the hummingbirds love it. Mine is by itself in a pot about the same size as yours, but I'm having to water it twice and day and fertilize once a week. Yours may need supplemental water. The only other canna I have is Tropicanna, and it is ornamental even without blooms because of the foliage. I'm in the market for a Cleopatra or Bronze-Leafed Cannova Peach next spring for the same reason. I'm not sure what's wrong with your limelight hydrangea in front. Does it get full sun all day? I know that's what the tag says, but I have mine planted where they get a little shade relief in late afternoon and still get plenty of bloom. You might want to join a Facebook page called Mid-South Gardening-Zones 6 7 8 and 9. It is out of Memphis, but the administrator is very knowledge with years of horticultural experience behind him; also a lot of members are long-term gardeners who might help answer some of your questions. My Cherry Truffles is doing fine but is in shade all day (bright shade). Some colors do better than others, and I think the black or dark leaved ones do better for hot climates. I have Carnival Black Olive that has thrived and I've even divided a couple of times. I also have an Autumn Bride which is green but has beautiful fat white bloom stalks and looks good all summer. I've also had Southern Comfort for about 10 years, but it is a little more finicky than the Black Olive. Look for heucheras in the villosa family.
Thanks Amanda for this helpful video. I'm in Texas, zone 9, with similar issues for some of my plants so it is encouraging to know I'm not alone with struggling plants. My Bubblegum petunias haven't survived. I found that my antique roses in pots benefitted from extra watering to keep the leaves from turning brown. If fact a happy accident occurred when I flooded the pots and the next few days I had new blooms and new growth, yay! BTW, You look so cute in your dress and sunglasses! Stay cool!
Canna lilies are happiness in the ground. They are heavy feeders and love water. Got to get back to the video ❤ oh and I have fertilized my petunias again and pinched back old bloom stems. Ive seen a little bit of new growth and flowers. But I've also lost 3 of them. They are a Noname variety but they look like fat marshmallows . Great video hope you get some relief from this heat 🤗💓💞💕
I am a new gardener, learning so much with trial and error 😂 I planted marigolds as my catch plant for spider mites in the veggie garden, it’s working so far 🙏🏼
Your supertunia may have gotten too hot with the radiant heat of the concrete path. Possibly the same issue with the canna being so close to the hot bricks. I had that trouble with peas this year planted next to the patio pavers.
Hi Amanda, have you tried contacting PW on the lime light hydrangeas? I wrote down a treatment for hydrangea leaf spot/fungus: 1 ounce hydrogen peroxide 8 ounce water Spray on leaves I've experienced fungal and die back on hydrangea (not PW varieties) . Your hair and dress are pretty🌱
I loved this video! I'm down south of Houston in 9A and the summer has been just brutal since mid-June for us. Do you ever use shade cloth? I haven't used it before, but I'm considering it for this summer.
I gave up on Canna’s. Mine would get leaf rollers every year and the foliage would look terrible!! Plus, Canna’s were taking over the bed. Enjoy your videos. I am 7B in central Arkansas.
My bluestone perennial plants are doing poorly also, I think they are just inferior quality. I won't shop there again, will let you know how my Garden Crossing plants fare if a few months. :)
I think it may just be that those particular plants are not suited for the hot and humid, especially hot night time temps of southern climates. I think Bluestone is in Connecticut? I've got perennials that I got from Bluestone 15 years ago that are still thriving. One mail-order company I can recommend is Romence Gardens. I ordered during their fall sale last year, and they ship in 5.25 in containers. I haven't lost a single plant, and have even divided a couple of them (Fancy Finch ajuga and hardy geranium).
@@mkitchens8163 You could be very well correct with the hot and humid southern conditions. I did order identical plants from Garden Crossings to compare quality with Bluestones'; I do know the baptisias I ordered from both places the prices are about the same a few $ higher from GC but the plants are 10x bigger. I know the ones from Bluestone are already dead only 2 trying to survive LOL. I will check our Romence Gardens TY! :) Heidi from GC have YT channel that is what convinced me to give them a try!

This season for the first time I fought with voles and had to dig up many plants and put in pots to save them. Voles will eat roots up to crown and kill the plant. They love conifers and evergreen roots, astillbes, ferns, and young roots from new plants.
I'm new to your channel and assuming since you're in zone 8a and have a rockwall in your back garden, then you must be somewhere in central Texas. I'm in zone 9a just south of Houston. This has been a really tough year on plants. I'm a native resident and don't remember having such brutal hundred drgreel heat and no rain which started the first of June. I know we have but I wasn't a dedicated gardener then!😂 My point here is the plants just don't get a break. It's 100+ all day with very little rain and night temps only fall to 80, which seems to be the high temps in some other parts of the country. From the videos, your soil appears dry even though I see emitters all over? I guess my consolation is that we're going into August so not far from that first blast of cooling air (hopefully). Well anyway, looks great overall. I wanted Pugster but haven't heard great things about it so probably a weak specimen to begin with. Thanks for your tour. I get really bummed watching videos of garden tours from Maryland, Connecticut, California and their lush gardens this time of year. If you ask me, we are the true gardeners with having a beautiful garden against the odds!
I’m in north Texas! Yep, we are going into the worst month of the year for heat and it’s going to be rough. I water with the drip lines every day but it’s tough to keep up with this heat.
My zinnias gave good show since spring but are now dying and crispy on their bottom thirds in all this heat. 104 today 105 next three days then 104 again. The front garden looks very stressed. I’ll probably have to take all the zinnias out soon and even the marigolds. They’ve had their day but in this heat I don’t have the motivation to replace them with anything. 😅 Edit: all my cannas are tucked in behind the front bushes so they are still not even a foot tall. Started them from seeds this year so not expecting anything from them this year except to start making tubers to start an early growth spurt next year.
You look amazing in your cute dress and pretty hair, Amanda! Thanks for showing the struggles we have here in Texas in these two hellish months of July and August. Two of my jazzberry supertunias went kaput like your bubblegum petunias. But another one and the same bed is just fine. And I was using the water soluble fertilizer from PW. Sometimes I think my plants die from too much fertilizer. They seem to do better when I don't use it much. Always strange and curious happenings in the gardens here in Texas in Jully and August. One of my limelight hydrangeas did the same thing last year. This year its fine. My other five on the other side of the house have never had that issue.. Gotta get some of that Superbena Stormburst. Looks so cooling in your garden. Poor birdie! Your garden still looks lush and beautiful for the most part . I need to plant more! Mine is too spotty this year. Thanks so much for all your hard work and sharing with us, Amanda! Let us know if we can ever come for an in person tour someday.
Aww thanks! Yeah I was bummed about the one supertunia that didn’t make it. I’ll keep an eye on how much fertilizer I use so I don’t over do it … I typically only fertilize one or twice a month.
I finally gave up on Cannas. Really loved the Tropicana because of the foliage color but always had leaf rollers. Also, by August, the foliage looked bad. They were in big pots in the shade. I’m in Wylie, too. Spider mites are always bad!!
I think we are all going to struggle with the climate change! So far I have killed 2 calibrochoas with overwatering and 4 marigolds with underwatering. The 2 things still living which i did not expect to survive in the heat are the coleus and impatiens! Go figure.
I like to see the struggles as well, and how others handle it great learning tool! Your huechera's may really love your new shade garden area. Congratulations on your garage sale! I am struggling with my Standard Quickfire buds formed but not flowering, this is it's second year anyone experience this? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
@shesamadgardener yes for sure started out really dry and hot, starting to get more normalcy. I'm hoping it's just getting adjusted and next year it will put on a show I was hoping for lol!
Cannas and plumbago are both standard fare here in North Florida. I have never seen either as stand outs in pots. Remember also, yesterday's rainfall was 2.75 inches here. Not an uncommon event. This are water loving plants, not just humid air plants. Hope this helps!😊
I lost all 3 of my bubblegum supertunias. We have been in the triple digits also here in Kansas. Today is suppose to be 105.. My white wedding hydrangea has just started to drop all of its leaves I don't know why I'm assuming the weather . BTW you look absolutely beautiful for this tour
Thanks Amanda for being a realistic gardener!
You are so welcome!

My annuals aren’t doing well. About to just chuck em. Coleus is faded and getting eaten alive (maybe earwigs). Pentas and marigolds are not blooming.
It’s so stinking hot that I feel like a lot of annuals are struggling.
My heuchera lives in the shade.
Yeah, mine get morning sun … I’m working on my shade garden now so maybe I can transplant them.
Mine, too, but some do better than others. Those with villosa parentage do better in the hot and humid south.

My little quick fire did not bloom it’s first year in the ground but it has this year. Has your weather been irregular?
@shesamadgardener yes for sure started out really dry and hot, starting to get more normalcy. I'm hoping it's just getting adjusted and next year it will put on a show I was hoping for lol!
Your cannas and plumbago are in a small pot for such large plants. Check the roots, they may be out of soil.
Cannas and plumbago are both standard fare here in North Florida. I have never seen either as stand outs in pots. Remember also, yesterday's rainfall was 2.75 inches here. Not an uncommon event. This are water loving plants, not just humid air plants. Hope this helps!😊
Good point!
Yeah, I’m wondering if this is just what will happen with my hydrangeas with the heat. Thanks 💚💚💚
Canna lilies love to be in ground otherwise you'll have to water everyday in this heat ..
Yeah I think I need to move them to the ground.
