    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer
      @StoneyRidgeFarmer  3 роки тому +20

      We have no top soil....and everybody and their mother says "lime...lime...lime...lime" but if ya think about it...and this is from the mouths of other's who engage in regenerative agriculture....running livestock and building soil is what corrects the PH permanently...not putting a dusting of lime...it's a band aid and we're looking for a complete overhaul of the land...keep watching as the broom straw disappears without throwing money on the ground. Cow manure, grazing and urine my brotha! Stick with us....we can't "fix" it in one season...it's gonna take a few years and less $$$$

      @@StoneyRidgeFarmer I appreciate you answering.................. but I am in the Hay business.... which requires immediate response to Fertilization.......In order to get the required nutrients in the harvested product..... I have to throw it on the ground...... People even cow and goat people ain't gonna buy Hay with broom straw in it..........If I was as big on You Tube as some folks I could use that to pay my fertilizer and chemical bill......................

      It doesn't matter which concept you use soil ph is primary. With out the calcium very little of the other nutrients are going to be beneficial to plants.
      Limestone is a natural mineral not chemically produced.

    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer
      @StoneyRidgeFarmer  3 роки тому +9

      Your hay should pay you and your chemical bill if you're in the hay business right? Fertilizer is a short term pill for a long term problem, robbing the land without putting nutrient back. We spread 3 tons to the acre for 3 years and it made no difference. I now use Solucal and target specific areas of low Ph. if I need it. As for the "big on UA-cam" well....I'll tell you, this is the hardest and most fun way to earn a living that I've ever experienced. You think farming and managing land is tough...add another 50 hours a week and the creativity that it takes to make these vids. It's most certainly not gonna land in your lap, time time and more time. Time is our most valuable commodity, and social media takes up a ton of my time, hence responding to your comment on my Sunday afternoon instead of riding a boat out on the lake or a Harley up in the hills. I'm not selling ya anything, I'm showing ya how I do it. Sit back and enjoy...your spiteful conclusion to your comment is unnecessary

    If like most sickle bar mowers the bar is released from pitman pin and slide out the other way (opposite side of mower)...I assume the moving rock guards bar does too...no other disassembly needed. Also mowing rough or rock train, there should be adjustments to roll the bar so the guards lay uphill from direction of travel, to keep the teeth out of the dirt

      @looserkuka Рік тому

      I am pretty sure you are right, i just bought one and i think it says in the manual you can pull both out from underneath the mower. Also if you break any gear on a rotary mower you have way more work and expenses to replace that gear than if something breaks on the this style....

    I grew up on a cattle farm, just retired from a milk dairy after 40 years. We had an International sickle. When we finished with it for the day, Dad would put used motor oil on the blade before we put it in the shed.
    When we took any bolts off for a repair, we would always take the bolts in to our shop and clean the treads on a wire wheel on the grinder, it made them go together like new.
    Thanks, Emile from CT.

    I am leery of those things. Way back around 1980 while helping change out teeth, and reinstalling, the bar slipped. I had my hand in a bad place. Could've lost a finger but it hung up. Be safe out there!

    Josh, I worked for a company years ago where we assembled sickle bar mower assemblies for several oem brands. I've always liked how they cut, but they can be high maintenance, as you have demonstrated. Keeping them lubed is very important.

    Josh I am from Missouri. The tall brown grass you have growing in your pasture we call sage grass. My father would have lime put on the fields and it would get rid of it as well as blackberry briars. Makes better pastures and helps the grass that is growing in the pasture. I like your videos and the way you are not afraid to try things to get things done. Keep up the good work.

    Heck of a good job on that repair. If you've ever been to an old farmer estate sale you saw and wondered why he had so many parts for countless machines. Like me,when something broke you buy what you need plus a spare: if it broke once it will probably break again and you rarely have days to waste waiting on the part....

    Great Video!!!
    Born in 1959, I was around 9 or 10 when my Father had me up on the International, Farmall Tractor and Cickle Bar to cut the Hay for the farm. We would put the Hay in loose.
    She made a great cut and the field looked nice when the job was complete. However, more than once, we would run into a Hidden Hornets Nest!!! I would raise the Bar and slap her in high gear!!! Lol

    As I'm watching your video, and your patience for changing camera angles to give us a better look, and your patience for explaining the little details, like leaving the guards loose until the last one is in. I can't help but think how the heck do 28 people not like the video? Lol, you can't please everyone that's for sure but come on, just your dedication to providing a nice product is enough to earn a like I think. Not to mention, the video is a great guide to anyone tackling this job. Good job as usual Josh.

    I learnt a lot watching this Josh. I have a 7' sickle bar thats exactly operates the same way. Mine is a J.D. aftermarket Frontier brand that i got with my tractor in 2018. Your right, they're awesome mowers. The rock guards move in opposite scissor actions as the knives. My mower is in its third summer of use, and "knock on wood" its never been any problems so far. Good video my friend.

    Hello Josh, I remember watching my dad, when I was a young boy, sharpen the teeth on his sickle bar mower. If you lay that bar down flat, you can take the drive end apart first and remove the bar without taking it all apart. At least , that's the way I remember him doing it.

    Around here it's called brome grass. The ol timers used it make brooms. Just like johnson grass. If cut early enough the cows will eat it in hay form. It's actually native to america. Fescue and kentucky blue grass was brought to america.

    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer
      @StoneyRidgeFarmer  3 роки тому +3

      Broom sage or broom straw is a little different from actual "Broom Grass" ....both are native species, however Broom grass is nutrient dense..where this stuff is more like cardboard. Now..you are right, if grazed or clipped green it makes good hay, not high quality hay, but good goat and cow hay. Our plan this year is to never let it get to this stage of growth by intensive grazing. Thanks for the great coment!

    A friend of mine uses a sickle mower to cut hay with. Seems to work extremely well and they don't lose as much of the alfalfa leaves like they would with a swather. I can't remember what tractor they use, its an old John Deere 3 wheel tractor, probably 50 years old or older. Their hay baler is so old it has its own engine, pull it behind the tractor but no PTO, it has I think an 8HP Wisconsin engine on it. You can add a PTO to it as it looks like there's bolts on the flywheel where you could bolt on a PTO, but for some reason they run it with its own engine, I'd think the tractor would be able to run the baler but maybe not enough PTO horsepower I'm guessing as to why they don't run it with the PTO.

    Hey Josh, good job on the sickle bar mower. I'd do what a few have already suggested instead of running the dirty bolts in/out of their threaded holes.
    Soak in kerosene, or in Gunk parts cleaner can with internal parts holder - available in most auto parts stores. Good for small carb parts too, etc.
    Then wire wheel the threads till clean and brush into the threaded holes the same mixture. Or, if really gunked up, use tap to chase the threads until clean. Then copper anti-seize on bolt threads and blue locktite on any nuts that might vibrate loose.
    Your super clean might work on the sliding parts, shims, etc. before dismantling, or after to clean the remaining stationary pieces.
    Would you mind linking to your black roll around stool - Craftsman? and the Titan roll around work-tray?
    Thanks,
    Have a good mow with the sickle bar once completed...
    Carter

    Love to see close detail shot of why you love your cycle bar mower show us how it trims , {Okay now look here see how nicely this cuts} show us how that hummer cuts, if you would.
    for example that "cow gone" doggone invasive broom straw. Can you beat reseed cycle of broom straw? just for fun: find remote corner-ish side of farm and get a gallon of vinegar and test try putting vinegar on broom straw root base and see if it kills root ball of the straw where it comes out. Also wondering if seed is traveling in with bales of hay that you're rolling out on land much like we get weeds in compost soil that we amend our gardens with and end up getting invasive weeds like horse tail and butter cup.

    Are you sure a rock did that? Your issue looks nearly identical to mine . . . But I know my field is rock free, and mine breaks after just 5 acres of cutting 🙁. But I guess you'll find out if it's cutting everything for several acres and no breaking 😉. Kuddos to you for taking it all apart! I just bought a new bar!

    I have a Tonutii Sickle Bar mower which Im pretty sure is the same as the Gaspardo. I need some odds and ends parts for it. Where do you get your parts from? Thanks for any help you can provide. I enjoyed your videos on the sickle bar mower!

    Those impact drivers sure are handy for theses type jobs! Do you mind sharing with me the brand tire you have on that Massey? I have a 245 orchard model that’s going to need tires soon and I like the looks of those you have.

    I believe you did a lot of unnecessary work. The old sickle bar mowers you would put the bar all the way down and pull the cutter bar out in one piece.. the reason why u see the old ones on hedge rows is because they had to be bolted on the tractor.. 3 point hitch changed all that. Plus the invention of the haybine.. Its all a learning process.. love the channel Josh.

      hmmm....well, I had to fix it brotha...and the only way to get it out was to remove all of those parts. So, work about 4 hours and get'r fixed...or park it and let it rust up like all them sickle bar mowers ya see at farm auctions. A $100 part on a $1500 mower....it was fun! Wooooo!

    I would have ground it out with a die grinder and hot glued it with the mig in place . . . If you can slip a piece of aluminum behind the broken parts or put grease begind them it could keep you from welding too many pieces together.

    Okay, Stoney Ridge Farmer - I'm curious how many times you've had to repair these sickle bars, either the blade bar or the guard bar. I have a Frontier SB3108 which is made by Maschio Gaspardo and is essentially identical. I've had to repair my bars four times now and it is getting ridiculous. One blade bar in 2022, one blade bar in 2023, and two guard bars now in 2023. It's getting to be that I can do a pit stop change on these things. Between the repair time and the cost of parts I'm beginning to think these machines aren't so great. So if you've got secrets on keeping these from breaking, or if you have changed your mind and gotten something different, fill me in.
