      @@glitterspray as a human I dislike the concept of any living thing burning to death. The animals screaming added to the surreal horror of the scene. It wouldn't have had such an impact without the animals and the film would have suffered for it.

      Of course horses and all kind of other kid/ teen targeted designs.

    That was *awesome!* But I’ll thank you not to make fun of our shops in tiny rural communities, selling oddly mismatched, strangely cobbled-together goods & sundries! Fondly [?!!] do I remember visiting a uniquely stocked shop in a remote village on the beautiful Isle of Anglesey, Wales, during my childhood [torrentially rainy] summer holidays, which were purveyors of truly essential, not at all weird (but _admittedly_ *totally* abstract everyday necessities) including:-
    • rum-laced homemade clotted-cream fudge;
    • nightmare-fodder china dolls with _terrifying_ deathly rictus expressions on their porcelain faces, fully kitted out in traditional Welsh costume;
    • & their main passion, yarn the colour of sludge, 🧶 spun from their very own Angora rabbits🐰, farmed on site in _definitely_ not PETA approved wire cages. They also had a limited range of knitted rabbit hair nightgowns & underwear/vests, for those _vital_ occasions when you absolutely _have_ to clothe your young child in allergy-inducing, horribly itchy _totally_ rash-tastic fashion aberrations. Plus what can _only_ be charitably described as "remarkably distinctive" crocheted decorative items - if, say, you wanted to serve your sickly alcoholic fudge on a lumpy, hairy, lanolin-drenched misshapen doily (shedding everywhere), & require your home to forevermore reek of the distinctive & unpleasantly pervasive odour of a damp, unkempt & [sadly] neglected, greasily-matted bunny!
    And all in the _excruciatingly_ uncomfortable store atmosphere of the owner glowering at you the entire time - from the _very_ first moment you enter the establishment, until you can make your escape & finally leave (only after purchasing various assorted over-priced, scratchy hirsute tat) whilst they converse with a local in hushed muttered tones in their native Welsh, not even trying to hide the fact that they _totally_ *hate* the English with a passion, & their burning resentment at their dependence on having to rely on your custom, & by necessity suffering the indignity of allowing you to set foot on their premises.
    None of that "The customer is always right" or "Have a nice day!" You just can’t put a price on that kind of [lack of] service & the golden memories formed from that _special_ retail experience...apart from the possible inevitable psychological therapy! And not forgetting a lifetime supply of industrial-strength antihistamines & EpiPens for the severe rabbit dander exposure triggered allergy...although at least one _[probably]_ won’t develop - & die - from a severe Nicholas Cage *"Not the BEES!"-esque fatal allergic reaction!🐝🐝🐝
    Edit: Apologies for all that! I’ve been awake now for _way_ over 50 hours with a _massively_ persistent migraine/cluster headache, & I appear to have gone somewhat [even more than usually] "loopy", resulting in a bizarre, overly long meandering missive! My dog’s looking worried, but he’s trying to sit on my head, which may well be therapeutic!

      Sorry to be nosey but do you mind saying when you visited that shop? I live very near Anglesey and would be very interested 🙂

    • @lornaginetteharrison7168
      @lornaginetteharrison7168 4 роки тому +3

      Dawn Morgan: Oh crikey, I feel totally ancient now (I’m in my increasingly decrepit mid 40’s!) so this was through the 1980’s to early 1990’s I guess. The rabbit farm/shop wasn’t too near the main places we used to stay, which were rented holiday cottages in Rhosneigr, Cable Bay & Aberffraw/St Cwyfan’s Church Bay areas mainly on the western coastal side of Anglesey (very beautiful; plus & it wasn’t _always_ rainy!).
      But the shop was somewhere inland, which we’d visit on the journey back home, so my Mom could stock up on boxes of that fudge for relatives, & my sister & I could get freaked out by the satanic-looking China dolls! To be honest, I think my parents only really took us in there because we got a perverse enjoyment out of the bizarre mix of items they sold - & the very severe lady manning the whole operation glaring at us the whole time!
      After a quick Google search, I found mention that there currently *IS* a place called 'The Anglesey Angora’s Rabbit Farm,' in Llangefni, owned by a woman named Rosalind Easter - so the rabbits in question are _literally_ 'Mrs *Easter’s bunnies'!* - & she’s apparently one of the UK’s few rabbit wool knitters (her range of clothing includes coats, caps, scarves & shawls).
      It would be an absolutely _amazing_ coincidence if this was completely unrelated to the shop we visited; so if it _is_ indeed connected, it sounds like a *very* different operation to the business during my childhood, & I’m feeling rather guilty now for painting its 80’s/90’s incarnation in such a "colourful" [kind of humorous but perhaps disparaging] light! The address is given as 'Angora Workshop & Farm, Llangefni, Anglesey LL77 7TW.' Anyway, might be well worth a visit if you’re ever in the area!☺️

    As a former pagan, this film is uh... pretty off on showing the religion lol. (I'm converting to reform judaism now)

    • @lulugu3
      @lulugu3 4 роки тому +6

      Also a somewhat former Pagan, Paganism is as big a blanket term as any other religious term is. There are many branches of Paganism, just as there are many branches of Judaism, and modern Wicca is quite different to the old religion shown in the Wicker Man. The clear ethos of "an none it harm, do what ye will" is somewhat overridden by The Wicker Man. However I love the movie, and always enjoyed the very nature-oriented atmosphere of it.

    What if Howie had succumbed to Willow's charms? They would have let him go of course!
    One very strong sub theme of this movie is the importance of Howie getting to where he's going by his own choice. Willow's invitation is all part of the plot, as is the beetle in the school desk; which basically tells him what the islanders are up to. A 'beadle' is a church official and Howie is a deacon of his church - the beetle is Howie, being drawn in ever decreasing circles to his doom.
    The Wicker tree, which I don't recommend, is the sort of official sequel to this movie and there's a policeman in that who obviously came in the same capacity as Howie but gave in to temptation and stayed.

    • @juliataylor2623
      @juliataylor2623 2 роки тому

      very astute observations i had missed myself. But i thoroughly enjoyed the sequel which i found a logical consequence of the Islands discovery.

    • @operationgoldfish8331
      @operationgoldfish8331 2 роки тому +1

      @@juliataylor2623 I just find the sequel to be lacking the subtlety of the original. It appears that the human sacrifices are a regular occurrence, whereas in the original it was a one off due to a dire emergency and the islanders went to extremes to remove the guilt from themselves. Howie had to choose to be sacrificed and, because of his beliefs, they were honouring him and giving him a special place in heaven.
      There's no sense of this with the Wicker Tree. I also know of no pagan tradition that relates to how the sacrifices in that movie were performed. I also feel that the local pagans were somewhat duped into appearing in a movie which they thought was going to be like the original, which, despite the central theme of murder, gave a quite sympathetic and well researched view of how a modern pagan community might operate.

  • @arielilijeva3019
    @arielilijeva3019 Рік тому +3

    Regarding ‘own free will’, if I recall correctly Howie is personally entreated (via anonymous letter) to come to the island to find Rowan. While it’s to be assumed he then sought permission to go from a higher-up, I would consider it to not be the same as if the police were contacted and chose Howie to be sent on assignment.

    I highly recommend reading the book by Anthony Scheaffer, based on the final shooting script, if only because it is the only vestige we have of the film before it was cut down by a studio that had just changed heads and was dead set on trashing the last work of his predecessor. (Even the longest version you can find is a fragment of the true vision.) Some deleted things that would have added more context: 1) Howie was engaged and was going to be married as soon as he returned to the mainland -- he is so torn and frustrated by the temptation of Willow because neither he nor his fiance, Mary, want to wait to start both their physical or spiritual lives together anymore. 2) Lord Summerisle is, like his grandfather, a scientist, and he keeps careful watch of the strains they get their apples from. He knows there is a scientific reason the strains are failing but cannot yet find a solution, and he is knowingly allowing this man to be killed despite this knowledge; he also has a limited time to find a botanist to help him fix the problem because he will either be killed or have to flee if come summer the crops are not back -- and they WON'T be. The Wicker Tree implies he did, in fact, flee before this could happen. 3) Something Howie and Summerisle bond over in a deleted scene is birdwatching, and in the final scene, Howie uses some of the last of his strength and breath to free some of the birds trapped in the arms of the wicker man, convinced that since he came to the island to save someone, then at least he can save them. There are several other things that I am not mentioning, but all the more reason to read the book!

    One of my absolute favourite films. When Constable Howie sees the Wicker Man before the audience does, his reaction is absolutely bone chilling. Magnificent movie. Love your review, Bee! A LOT of films attempt to create unease and "oh now, where's this going?" in their "creepy town hiding a secret" movies, but... THIS one ACCOMPLISHES it. It's such a great film. OH - the ending where the burning head of the Wicker Man falls and you see the sun it's been sacrificed to... masterful.

    I do enjoy being "out of the Cage" witrh the original movie. did you notice that Howie became "the heart of the wicker man"?
    Ahh ... 'Damn Yankees' ..'ya gotta have heart!' In "the Caged version", the sacrifies, plural, were a yearly thing. In the ORIGINAL VERSION, it is meant as a onetime-crops failed thing. As it should be.

    With the Cage remake they took out everything that was good about the original, the mad soundtrack and 70's styling and made a truly pitiful remake. God bless Chris Lee and Edward Woodward

    Wicker Man cult members may be a dying breed, but we can still be pretty scary... lucky for you this was hilarious, not sacrilegious! This looks like the original theatrical cut. There is a director's cut that restores the missing section of the pointlessly butchered tavern song and I've seen a ghastly woke cut that rearranges the entire narrative to cut out the, erhm, 'corruption of the young" scene.

    Speaking of bees anyone remember a movie about killer bees and there is a scene in the movie where the bees attack a family at a picnic and this boy escapes by getting into the families car and driving away he ends up back in town traumatised with dead bees on the windshield of the car the little boy gets taken to hospital because of all his talk about the killer bee. In the next scene the doctor enters the boys hospital room
    instead of seeing the doctor in his room the boy starts hallucinating and sees the doctor as a bee because the boy is traumatised after seeing the bees attack his family. Does anyone know the name of the movie?
