    This was great.
Mental illness, mental hygiene, & mental health are so important!
I can’t fathom what lives on in a combat vet or contractor’s mind after all the outside noise stops!
I just know that I’ve had around 40 years of massive unexpected adrenaline dumps. Frequent, intense, and rolling in and out like waves. Just pushing through it, working on the deeper stuff and finding exceptionally people as inspiration to keep doing the work.
Y’all amaze me & I think you guys are the ones I need to be listening to in order to stay in the fight & motivated.
Thanks guys. All of you combat vets out there.
Who knew you’d come home from war and inspire civilians to keep working hard on their mental health. To me, speaking up about THAT stuff is as courageous as anything else you’ve done in your lives. Thank you for that!!

It’s crazy hearing these spec ops stories. As a regular Army guy I always looked up to these guys and assumed their workload was double ours. Come to find out us regular army infantry guys were doing a lot more than these spec ops guys. Shawn said he did 3-5 month deployments, we did 12 every time, minimum. They said they would sometimes go out on hits and sometimes they would have nothing to do. We went out every single day for 12 hour patrols. Every day. Sometimes they would last long se when we found weapons caches, IEDs or if we made contact with the enemy. Not only that, almost every night out company did raids to capture key leaders. So you could have been out for 13 hours that day, walking through villages looking for bad guys and weapons, sleep for 2 hours, then go out at 1am n a company raid. I did hundreds of raids, patrolled every day, for a freakin year! Sleeping on the ground in tents in the middle of nowhere with no electricity or showers or good food.

Im one of those ignorant people from a small town of Kansas who was never around anyone in the military very much. I liked the comment about doing your research before going into something or.... well.... you were talking about shooting a gun at the time but I would not have really thought about that in the beginning of anything. I always jumped in feet 1st to see if I landed. It truly was so interesting listening to this episode. I’m for arming teachers. I’m not for forcing teachers to be armed. But I think a teacher who is willing to be armed and stop a school shooter should be able to be armed if they choose, and then trained to a degree more than just pointing and shooting. I like the one entrance idea. Someone needs to make sure who you are and why you’re coming in the school. If they don’t know that info, you’re not coming in. That entry point should be reenforced with someone with a gun. The school doesn’t have to hire anyone, cops are already paid for from taxes and shit. Put one of them, or 2 in the school. We had SRO’s at my high school which were cops with the title of school resource officer. If we’re not going to arm teachers, we need a good guy with a gun in the school. Bottom line.

9/11 is really hard on me. I was in MEPS, I had a date of 16NOV01 and then called my recruiter and wanted to go as soon as possible. I was called on 2OCT01 and told the next day, I was going in. Then fast forward to Fiscal year 2005, Congress decided to reign in military funding. I was denied a CJR because they were downsizing and used 1st term Airmen instead of the Clinton downsizing. I was cut back. The day I returned from my deployment to Iraq, I was told all of this. I would be less than a year from retirement. Now, because Covid after a second career of 13 years, I was let go again. I fucking hate life. If I would have waited until my original date, I would still have a career I am the most proud of.

I watched your interview with Marc Polymeropoulos and was shocked to hear the ending. Bill Mulder was my college roommate for 4 years and my best friend in life. I tried for over a year to get him help. It was always the stigma that he couldn't and wouldn't shake. He would not lose his clearance for anything, even when I told him he was losing his family. It was so painful. There were so many nights I spent hours and hours on the phone with him talking about everything under the sun. Trying to help him heal, trying to influence him to get help and move beyond his past. In the end, I didn't answer a call when I knew he was in a bad spot. I was coaching my sons baseball game and just couldn't answer. So much that Marc talked about with Veterans i lived with Bill. It was painful to see him change into someone I didn't know. He was dealing with so much pain. He wrote and texted me his final will and testament just days before his death. I just never thought he would actually do it. Sound Off is spot on with how they identify what is needed. How in the hell can our government spend billions of dollars overseas, depending on people like Bill, and then we have to fundraise back home just to have the most minimal amounts of money to have any ray of hope for the mental challenges they endure? Sometimes I feel like I'm headed down a road I never wanted to be on but I knew was coming. I knew it 15 years ago. I don't know how to honor Bill and spend most days just trying to forget and not open the black box of pain associated with Bill's last year of life. It's surreal that I'm even typing this right now, but I guess I always knew it was coming. When I first went to his family's ranch near San Antonio I could feel it was the end game. That place was so much Bill and he got to share it with those he really cared about before he left. Anyway, I am happy that he left his mark on so many people and is still talked about today. I just wish I could find it within me to do more to honor him and what he did and sacrificed for the USA. Bill's whole story is extraordinary, maybe one day I can tell it from my point of view....when I feel strong enough to deal with the endgame memories. Well...... thanks for having a show that brings what Bill was going through to the forefront. Congressman Jodey Arrington of West Texas was able to pass the William "Bill" Mulder (Ret.) Transition Improvement Act of 2018 to help with veteran transition as well. Maybe all of this is leading to something bigger, maybe it isn't the endgame? Maybe it's just the beginning for healthier veterans?
