- The moment I met Felipe Alonzo (Mang Felipe), I knew we struck gold. He was a recording artist for Villar Records in 1975 singing Ilocano haranas. At the time I met him in 2008, he was 74 years old and drove a tricycle for a living. He passed away in 2013.
We have captured that very moment when he sang his signature song Dardarepdep for me in the streets of Vigan, Ilocos Sur. It was written for him by composer Remigio Peron and he performed it during a ‘sarswela’ - a theater staged in the open public.
In celebration of Harana movie’s 10-year anniversary since its international premiere, we are releasing previously unseen field recordings. Many thanks to director Benito Bautista and cinemtographer Peggy Peralta for wonderfully capturing these moments. And the best partner I could ever ask for, producer Fides Enriquez.

it's a treasure na bago namaalam si Mang Felipe at Mang Tino ay narecord mo sila, or else another amazing talent & wisdom of yesteryears ay naglaho completely na di nasilayan ng mga susunod na henerasyon. Every elderly na namamaalam ay tones of library of wisdom & richly knowledge ang naglalaho na samantalahin ng youth to acquire to pass it on para di mawala.

I remember my Lolo Bernabe Musa, he played guitar, banjo, bajo and ukelele, and a WWII veteran, a local hero.
So beautiful! My mother was from Ilocos Sur (around Baguio) and she always talked about harana and the tradition of serenading and how impossibly romantic and beautiful it was. So happy to say I also visited Vigan when I went to Baguio. Lovely. This man reminds me of my paternal grandmother's brother (or simply my grandfather), who used to sing in this style and would serenade all the ladies, even here in the US! He got all the ladies, truth.

I watched Harana the other day ( just popped in my UA-cam) and I told my Daughter about it ( Harana ) and she asked me if it’s still being practice. When I said no, she said " it’s sad… "
