When I was in my early twenties, I would put my grandmother's records of Jerome singing hymns on at the extent of volume for my stereo, I would stand between the speakers, and I would imitate his voice. I must say I got pretty good. The only problem I has was that I just couldn't quite reach his massive vocal projection.
Listen to Orson Bean sing this in The Star Wagon at 1:01:31. I saw him in the first TV broadcast of the play and have loved this song the the memory ever since, even though I never saw the broadcast again for nearly 50 years. Watch how Bean drops his jaw and projects the sound like a good little voice student - charming and innocent and heartfelt. I saw Jerry Hines sing many times, had dinner with him as a guest of Ann Esch, soprano, after his concert for the 25th anniversary of Mershon Auditorium at OSU, and once saw him ACT Mephistopheles when he had no voice at the Pittsburgh Opera. May he and his beloved Lucia be together in the heavenly Jerusalem.
Bravo. Passion and love for God in all arrangements. Wonderful piano accompiment.
"The Holy City" is one of the greatest hymns ever written, and Jerome Hines sang it magnificently.
Incredible, beautiful yet powerful. Always a family favorite this amazing gentleman. Missed by many.....Accompanist is excellent.
What an amazing voice and a fantastic performance for any age. He was one of a kind!

The best bass all time in the world for me.
To have both a fully resonant and beautiful low E and high F is extraordinary :D!

The ability to have fully resonant low G's and A's is the 'gift of the basses' :D :D
I always played my 33 1/3 records of Jerome Hines at maximum volume! Especially "The Holy City"!
Are you 6’6" as he was? :)
@@cherylhay4394, yes, in my dreams. I'm 5' 6", though.
Jerome Hines su voz y estatura era de dos metros cuatro imponentes, el mejor del siglo xx

His techqnieu must have always been amazing to preserve his voice :D
Great
He can sing at any age.
Magnificent!
Hines must have been the inspiration for the E. M. Skinner 'Tuba Mirabilis', under expression, of course.
