LYRICS
One, two
One, two
It's not the barnacles that do all the damage
Figure this out too late
It's not the destination that makes the difference
It's the freight
Everything becomes a blur from six feet away
Get used to this
Every card ever turned over remains in play
Get used to this
Not every wave is a tidal wave
Not every wave is a tidal wave
It's not the mutiny that gets written down in the diary
It's the manifest
Forgotten cargo in obsolete measurements
Anybody's guess
Even the proud, even the very proud
Probably die on their knees
Twin masts out on the open seas
Mistaken for trees
Not every wave is a tidal wave
Not every wave is a tidal wave

"it's not the destination, it's the journey"
"no" says John. "it's not the destination, it's the freight"
it's what you carry with you.
it's the weight.
it's what's inside.

insane that the goats have been around since the 90s and they still manage to improve and innovate their sound on every. single. album
I guess you could say they are the GOAT, bloody gotten
Yeah, like, I can't deny how important "All Hail West Texas" is to me, but other than that one, "Gettin Into Knives" is my favorite album of theirs! Like, they make me feel optimistic about getting older! (I'm almost 40 now)
hi, i just wanted to let you know i’m doing a class assignment on you guys. it’ll be my final project as a senior in high school, called the “passion project,” worth the majority of my grade. it’s because of how your music speaks to me that i’ve chosen you for my topic. regardless of the year, genre, instruments being played, or lyrics, your music has always found a way to speak to me, and to hit me directly in my soul. your music taught me it’s ok to be emotionally exposed and vulnerable. in both your actions and words, the mountain goats has changed my life and my outlook on it. i hope i can not only share what you’ve done with others through my project, but also learn through your work how to make others feel just as you made me feel. even if i can only achieve a fraction of what you taught me, i know i’ll have done well. in the kindest words, thank you for what you’ve done. here’s to what has been, what is, and what futures we still have to write. all hail.
I did an important final project on the Mountain Goats too, quite a few years ago at this point. It was titled, "The Mountain Goats and my Soul" and I put a lot of effort into making my connection with tmg make sense to other people. Best of luck to you and your senior project!
How did it go?? This is so cool of you!
That sounds awesome! How did it go?
It's amazing to me how gradually and naturally John's music evolved from raw boombox blitzkrieg to tasteful literate soft rock
100%
the Mountain Goats, one of my favorite bands. It has been a long time since I hung out with John Darnielle.
The clarinets really make this song for me.
And Pat Gill on the electric keyboard
But will John Darnielle retweet the toad?
it really does look like him lmao
i literally had to do a double take when i first saw the piano player
Yes!
he has new shoes!
Clarinet is the hot sauce of Mountain Goats tracks. Definitely not needed on everything but DANG does it hit hard in the right spots.

I didn't know they existed. Perfect blind spot. I have so many Jeff twitty songs to listen to. A life time of tunes.
Everyone vibing out to this track, JD's slow dancing with his hand on his chest and holding the headphones to his left ear, the soft clarinets. This means so much to me 💚
Clarinet as an instrument has been redeemed for me
i stare judgingly with mos eisley cantina alien eyes
There's something about the minimalist vibes of the clarinet on this track that reminds me a bit of this instrumental piece by Arthur Russell. ua-cam.com/video/VHcUU8VQ8PI/v-deo.html
I don't know why but this song makes me want to fall in love
god, pph’s bass line is a soothing balm for my soul
Tidal Wave is my favourite new song to dance to, we all miss having experienced these songs come to life last year... But for 6 minutes here I imagined I was at a Mountain Goats show and it was transcendental in that room. Completely stunning! Thank you so much for this beautiful music!
This is one of my favorite songs on the album. Perspective is a gift
Mmmm mine too.

This song is so calm and chill. It's really nice. Also, the bass player has easiest part, but it also takes some focus and discipline to play the same exact thing for almost 6 minutes without any variation.
Love how full the arrangements sound with all the new musicians in the band! And it goes without saying that JD's songwriting is amazing
this song is just so soothing
This song brings me so much peace from my anxiety. As others have said the clarinets are so beautiful and carry me into a state of mind where I can let go of my spiraling thoughts.
Also maybe there is no real similarity but the last piece of music with clarinets that made me feel this way was in high school performing “On a Hymnsong of Philip Bliss.”
I think I've played all three clarinets parts in Hymnsong over the years. It really is a great piece - simple, but requiring so much control in its simplicity. And honestly the third clarinets have the best lines in it.
It sounds here like the two clarinets are trading off measures (or maybe just half measures?), which is somehow always easier said than done. They're doing an amazing job here. Hope we get to see more of this extended ensemble!
@@roguegreyjedi I played the triangle when we did it, which was great because it meant I got to actually listen to the song most of the time and enjoy it
I'm excited to see more from this set of sessions
my heart. this song has my heart.
I’d love to buy the video recording of this entire session. Hell, I’d buy two just to prove I’d buy the first one.
This albums become such an absolute favorite. Instant classic
I'll never get tired of this band I love y'all's music so much it has helped me out with a lot!!!!
Medicine for my heart and soul
I love those clarinets
Got incredible "Radiohead-From the Basement" vibes from the session, plus JD dancing at the end, instant classic
Oh, that was lovely. Thank you!
Thank you for the music because I really need it right now
What a gorgeous arrangement
Simply wonderful
This song is way too good
Hi, Goats!
Please Lord, I know I have asked for a lot this year, but I would be overjoyed if we were to get another Mountain Goats live album. Put it next on my list after quick vaccinations, and just before world peace.
I admire your priorities
++
They announced it today!!!
You're in luck.
I just love this so much -this album is so rich.🙏❤️
Heck yes!
Beautiful
Absolutely stunning performance!
I saw this track live and it was such a vibe, amazing
This rips so hard.
brilliant
Damn.
Yes! Needed this for the next plan
love to see it!
Love this 🙌
This is so beautiful, thank you for this!
this is a song that helps me get through the barnacles having suboptimal dps
The best part is John's long hair bobbing up and down
clickin on this i thought it was a cover of tidal wave by tom misch, not disappointed though
He really be drumming with a paint brush
Brushes are a pretty common drum stick...
That’s how you get such a soft sound on a loud instrument
i thought this was gonna be a ohsees cover lol
i love y'all with my whole life but you Gotta stop writing tattoo worthy songs, i'm gonna run out of space 😅
I love those clarinets
