I wonder how many of us have our own "drunk Jon"s that have eventually brought us here? Mine is funny Steve from the dining hall freshman year, now friends for life some 18 years on. Love this, bud
The reason people want to see carbon copies of the original is because many fans (myself included) consider in the aeroplane over the sea to be a perfect album. I wouldn't change a single sound or note on that entire album.
This song always had me thinking about my sister who passed away 10 years ago. 13 days ago though I lost the man who was father to me, and now I sit and listen and think about him.
Oh my god. I can't believe what I just found. Two of my favorites combined. LOVE! LOVE! LOVE! It's almost as if I manifested it into being! I love you Neutral Milk Hotel/Jeff Mangum. I love you Avetts Brothers. I'm a new Avetts Bro's fan and was recently thinking how alike Jeff and Seth are in spirit, in sound, and moves. So much love. Thank you.
I love this so much. Look, it’s no NMH. Of course not. That’s because these are the Avett Brothers. There’s something to be said, of course, for the original and why it sounds exactly how it does. Still, the song works outside of the context of the album, and can be covered well. This isn’t supposed to be a recreation of the song as NMH recorded it. It’s the Avett Brothers paying homage to a song they like. And they did a damn good job, I think. I love the strings and the banjo a whole lot.
When all senses are arrested in light of a thing such as this, these are the only words suitable...: "We do not merely want to see beauty, though, God knows, even that is bounty enough. We want something else which can hardly be put into words - to be united with the beauty we see, to pass into it, to receive it into ourselves, to bathe in it, to become part of it." - C.S. Lewis
I have to say, NMH fans have got to be the biggest tight-asses I know when it comes to covers if it doesn't sound like a carbon copy of the original... I'm glad to see a fair amount of love on the comments! Seth's voice is perfect. the lyric change threw me off haha, but this is just overflowing with wonderful.
I first heard this song during an impromptu jam session in a friend's studio apartment and loved it immediately. I love it even more hearing Avett and Co sing it....
This is what I love....back to their roots. When it was them breakin strings all over the place. Their out of tune melodies along with the lyrics when all combined together sounded.....well.....perfect. First time I saw these lads was in Tampla, Fl in a crowd of about 200 people. They came out for 3 encores. Ill never forget that night as long as I live. Boys, I love you, and I always will. But enough with the drums and piano. Yall were like nothing I had ever heard before. And now....
i think if i had to pick one song if the question was what’s your favorite song of all time kind of a silly question but this would be it. this rendition in particular. can’t believe how strange it is to be anything at all. my favorite lyric
How have I never had this recommended to me lol??? Absolutely great cover.. 8 years later haha. I feel like I've seen every avett brothers and NMH vid on youtube
I was first turn on to this song by 2 young men that i think wasn't old enough to get into a bar. they were busking in this great town park call Recreation Park in Binghamton, NY. i couldn't ask for a better way to end my day trip with my youngest son. i'll never forget that late august day and those 2 young man and they joy they gave us and the people around them listening to them sing for the love it. too bad we don't see more of that. maybe i'll get lucky and the brothers will play this song this may.
I find myself going back to this version almost more then the original which is already a masterpiece. This is like someone painting a Davinci that has just a touch more pleasing qualities to your eyes.
They should record this in a studio and really let loose with it. It fits right in with their style and repertoire; if I'd just encountered the original for the first time I might even be tempted to think it was Avett Bros., and if they released a cover as a single it might be one of those songs that becomes more famous under another artist.
Avett Brothers
this is so wholesome
I wonder how many of us have our own "drunk Jon"s that have eventually brought us here? Mine is funny Steve from the dining hall freshman year, now friends for life some 18 years on. Love this, bud
If I would’ve never read the comment, by the guy that met the drunk guy @ the campground, they would’ve passed right by me. Thanks !
I hope he's not piloting the aeroplane
Lovin the Death Grips shirt in the background. It captures the full fantano experience this video has.
Its almost as if it completes the Fantano circle in this video
+Akir Stuart what does the Asian represent tho ? Cal?

Completely agree with you. It was the first album that I ever listened to on repeat evey song through.
This song always had me thinking about my sister who passed away 10 years ago. 13 days ago though I lost the man who was father to me, and now I sit and listen and think about him.
same
That’s so sad hope you both are doing good
My little brother -- 10 years ago in August. Sorry about your dad. Hope you had a good dream of him. I did when my dad died in 1994.
Glenn Oettinger So sorry to hear ❤️
Ms. Ntropy Very sorry for your losses. ❤️ I dream of both of them often. It's very comforting.
how strange it is to be anything at all :')
topfy123 existential stuff right there
The Creation is a miracle.
My favorite line from the song, for sure.
That's the line, uzdna. That's the line
My dad’s favorite band playing my favorite band’s song while wearing my other favorite group’s t shirt.
This is surreal.
Holy shit, perfect, I'm so happy this exists
This is great. I love how the violin replaces the musical saw
So young here. But still the best band ever
one of my favorite bands covering my all time favorite bands song... life is good
The only thing missing is the saw. They use a bow and saw in the original and it gives it a psychedelic vibe.
when i saw them live, the singing saw was so fucking cool
@@tymirra8769 Lucky!
Not to mention it sounds like the notes of the screams bending and reaching through the trees
I really wasn't a fan of the vocal harmonization at first listen, but now I think it's really brilliant.
The boys really grow on you
I go through the whole album trying to harmonize and accompany him.
This song really touches me
+Shindy Listen to the original song. Its my favourite song.

This is how I love the Avett Bros.Raw, acoustic, heartfelt music without the bells and whistles. It never fails to take me to a better place.
I love this so much.

Simply amazing... one of my favorite bands covering a song by one of my other favorite bands... I'm in love!
Wow great cover. Was not expecting the band to come in like that haha, was only listening. Captured the essence of the song so beautifully
Arctic Monkeys fans are awful about this also. Covers are in different styles. That’s why they’re fun
Caught myself singing this today while waiting for my coffee to brew, what a beautiful song and wonderfully covered!
I first heard this song during an impromptu jam session in a friend's studio apartment and loved it immediately. I love it even more hearing Avett and Co sing it....
This is probably one of my favorite videos on all of youtube.

This is absolutely incredible. I have loved neutral milk for years and recently became a huge avett bros fan, this is one of the best videos ever!
I have lyrics from this song tattooed on me and I also have an avett brothers tattoo. This is the greatest thing to stumble upon.

If this video was untitled, you could still tell it was NMH from the thumbnail
I love this song so much, had to sit down and learn it yesterday.

My high school musical tastes how now officially merged with my adult tastes. Mind blown.

Crackerfarm - Thank you! This is so awesome! Please make more! Those boys sure can play the heck out of those instruments and sing!
I forgot how much I love The Avett Brothers :')
This cover and the one by Eisley are the only two versions that I think do this song any kind of justice.
this is GREAT..
Mind = blown. Thanks guys.
