- Double bassist Renaud Garcia-Fons was destined to create music that spans genres and borders: He was born in France to a family with roots in the Catalonia region of Spain, and he's fluent in French, Spanish and English. Classical, jazz and flamenco represent equal parts of his musical DNA, and his technique reflects the delicate arco stylings of concert halls, the deep groove of jazz and the raw vitality of flamenco.
This appearance behind Bob Boilen's desk captures more than just Garcia-Fons' masterful technique. His musical vision can be heard in the digital loops of rhythm and sound that he generates entirely from his upright bass. He thumps, strums and pokes as he mines the sonic possibilities of not just his bass, but also his imagination.
Garcia-Fons isn't always such a lone wolf; his collaborators include symphony orchestras, jazz groups and an amazing trio that practically defines the concept of world music. If you only knew him through one genre, you'd be surprised to discover these other sides to his skills.
For one fortunate group of NPR staffers, we had him all alone with just his bass and creativity.

this is genuinely some of the most perfect intonation and control i have EVER heard on this instrument. Absolutely insane. WHAT a musician!
100% agree. I started writing this at 50 seconds in, and my jaw was on the floor! I'm now 3 minutes in... utterly blown away. (at 4:15... wow!)
His notes are clear as a perfectly pitched bell. I had no idea this level of intonation was even possible. he singularly redefined my Expectations of the instrument. He makes otherwise great players seem almost amateur and sloppy.
Renaud is one of the most humble, friendly, decent and polite guys you can possibly imagine. Setting up a venue for him is always a pleasure.
He comes across that way. Brilliant artist, to say the least.
This is my first time hearing him. I'm speechless.
He's like a mad scientist of the bass.
after watching this I'm seriously astonished, and undecided if going to the other room and practise more bass, or take some pictures and sell it
lol I know the feeling. It inspired me to buy a 5 string upright (Electric upright) I play electric but going to broaden my horizons. Upright sounds terrible when one starts as beginner he he but his music really touched me. inspiring stuff
I played a Bass and Tap duo in Montreux almost 20 years ago. It was challenging but I was doing all right.... Renaud GF was playing the main hall with Nguyên Lê and I popped around to check him out after my concert. He floored me and I have still to recover!
Holy crud...that was the most refreshing display of musicianship, technical precision, and emotion that I've ever seen in an unaccompanied performance. This man is a legend.

I had the big privilege of witnessing one of his solo live concerts with an audience of just around 30 people. It was a magical evening that i will probably remember forever. Amazing artist, amazing music.

Renaud Garcia-Fons is a true virtuoso of upright bass!
I didn't even think about the possibility that the instrument could sound like violin, cello, (occasionally) drums all together.
The lack of views is an utter shame.
I have watched and listened this segment many times over and this never stops to amaze me and my friends…. Mr Fons is in my mind up there with the best bass players ever.
This was just what I needed. Not a pop-, indie-, rock- or folk band, but a man with just one instrument and the entire world in his playing.
Parts of my soul just woke up. Your music did that.

Actually, 5-string basses are not uncommon in Europe. One may see 5 string bass's with a low C (or B) string in Symphonies across the continent.
The unusual thing about Garcia-Fons' bass is that he has strings tuned higher than usual. A normal bass(from lowest to highest)is tuned E-A-D-G. The bass that he is playing has two very uncommon strings, being tuned A-D-G-C-F. A few vendors sell high C strings, but high F is almost unheard of. His Fstring is almost as high as a cellos highest string.
Barre Philip and Hagen Stüdemann use also a 5 string bass with a high c string like Garcia-Fons. The result is sounding near the cello (arco) or guitar (piz for double stop or chords)

Amazing player but out of a genuine interest can anyone say for sure which tuning? I know that other virtuoso A B Ezra plays with a high C. Okay, just caught him tuning 🤗 highest he plucked was a C.

My first CD was the Navigatore (and since then he is one of my most important musical inspirations) - many years ago and in better times. What's left are some of my most precious memories - and Renaud Garcia-Fons is one big composer of their soundtrack. I am so thankful for his whole work. Maybe one day there is the opportunity to see and hear him live. ❤

So, I was listening to Leeland Sklar (pup/rock bassist) and he played a little video of Renaud, which, of corse, blew my mind out. I had to continue doing a little search of this man, and here I am, laying on the ground on ecstasy. What an out-of-this-world musician.

I got to this video through a link in some comments discussing bass sizes, before the video loaded in and it was just a title screen I legit thought I was hearing an Oud or Koto, I'm not the biggest fan of bowed bass personally but this is spectacular. This guy is a wizard at his craft.
