- There is a growing recognition of the importance of economic statecraft. In an address to the Lowy Institute ahead of the 2024 Federal Budget, Treasurer Jim Chalmers said that “economic resilience is an essential component of assuring our national security”. His remarks reflect a new global paradigm wherein the traditional separation of economics and security is no longer workable.
In this new era, Australia must treat its deployment of and response to economic statecraft with a sense of urgency, and as part of a broader joined-up foreign policy architecture.
On Monday 22 July AP4D hosted a webinar to launch the options paper ‘What does it look like for Australia to navigate a new era of economic statecraft in the Indo-Pacific’ - the culmination of five months of consultations with almost 40 experts from Australia and across the region.
The paper sets out future focused actions for Australia in its practice of economic statecraft, including how it can support its partners in the Indo-Pacific.
