Good job pal. Portland cement instead of lime mortar has just caused a costly and damaging damp problem at your customers house. Old houses require a porous mortar to relieve moisture and you've just blocked its ability to do that.
My choice would have been tuck pointing tool and hawk,
I find its quicker and neater.

Most builders merchants do there own versions, but whatever you get make sure it’s the concentrate version , best of luck 👍
