This would be my last resort. Hitting tab was what was frustrating to the OP in the first place. I never have a need to hit tab using these methods and it’s way faster if you have have keys setup for the various tools and faster still in contained selection mode.

TAB- click in the cluster on the object you want. If your item is not selected, hit TAB until your item is selected.
