Civil War haunted me and because of that I think I figured something out. It's a war movie that's not about death or journalism. It's about denying humanity. It's about trauma. It's about the death of the idea that life is precious. It was Jessie's (the young photographer) journey from a whole person into someone traumatized until they can disassociate enough to function in war. It's about what happens to people when they don't believe or stop caring about the preciousness of human life. That other people are just as fully human as they are. It's about what has to happen to a person in order to overlook the horrors of pits full of bodies. I think that's why it's polarizing. Not everyone gets it and that's not an easy reflection to see.
It's also a really hard thing to convey, and Alex Garland gets ALL of my respect for trying. IMO this is a film that transcends "movies" and can well and truly be called art. That said, I didn't "enjoy" it, but it is important.

I put off watching Schindler's List FOR YEARS... because I knew I wouldn't "enjoy it"... But it fully engaged me.. had me on the edge of my seat the whole time.... Because of the level of craftsmanship in the making of it, and the acting of Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes, in a way, I enjoyed the film deeply. I can only say that in a very qualified way, cause the subject matter is horrifying.
Could say the same with Civil War? I haven't seen it yet... and this video has talked me out of bothering... Would you still recommend it?

Civil War was brilliant. So intense. Still thinking about this movie.
The scene where they roll-up on the snipers pinned down by a shooter trying to kill people on the road. Journalists inquire who they are and try to get some context or what side each person is on, but they get as to the motivation is “they shot at us.”

Just a note on female lead movies. The UA-camrs you showed in your video don’t say you can’t have a female lead in a movie they say you can’t have a female lead in your movie and think that alone will make it successful. You need a good story no matter who the lead is. You kind of do them dirty by implying they simply hate on female leads.

The first 3 Alien movies seemed to have slipped her empty head, especially the first. Not only was Ripley the lead character played by Sigourney Weaver, but the main Alien creature was also a female. Both of them by the way better actors than Jennifer Lawrence. Nobody complained about the lead character being female, she was great.

I thought the Beekeeper was fun. With the caveat that I saw it on Amazon Prime without paying extra to watch it- I would not have liked it as much if I had paid a rental fee or to see it in a theater. It brings up current events (a coke sniffing, s*x worker frequenting son of a sitting president, government agency corruption) and pokes fun at them without engaging them. It doesn't take anything seriously, it's almost a parody of John Wick clones.
And Jason Statham has some movies I think are much better (Wrath of Man for example) that are not as big as they should be. I see the Beekeeper as delivering the elements that fans want in a Jason Statham movie, but almost pokes fun at those elements.

Back in the 70s, before Super Cinemas... there'd be one theatre showing 1 movie at a time. You'd wait in line around the block to buy a ticket for prime time shows. The budget place we'd go to (after the main theatres were done with the movie) would be packed and it cost 99 cents. Good movies would spend 2 years in theatres. That experience was a blast.
I don't go to theatres anymore. In general, modern movies just aren't any good, and the movie experience is not really fun like it used to be. Sit in a comfy chair in a huge theatre with 7 people. Wait a month and you can stream it.

@@rustyshackleford6035 Don't get me wrong there were certainly drawbacks. Because it was the low budget theatre you made sure to keep your jacket on in the winter time. The place was freezing. And with all the gum on the floor you had a 50/50 shot of walking out without your shoes. And not every movie was a winner. The most bored I ever was in that theatre watching Missing with Sissy Spacek... I mean I was 10.
But movie experience? Haven't you ever been to an event where, you can't really explain it, there's an energy? Raiders of the Lost Ark had that vibe. Obviously, Star Wars. Although I never saw it in the theatres. I was told I was too young. I was crushed. Its like waiting in a long line for a bad ass roller coaster. Anyways, that's my 2 cents. Everything is so convenient now, you never get any time to build anticipation.

    • @MaximGhost

By the early 80s, they had a multi-screen theater by me but they were still selling tickets for $1. With more screens, they would bring the good movies back every so often so that you can watch them umpteen more times for a dollar. That's how I ended up watching 1978's "Grease" WAY too many times for a kid. I think I'm still mentally scarred from that summer of self-overindulgence.
The only time I go to modern movies now would be to watch the occasional action or sci-fi hit on a huge IMAX screens. "Dune 2" was the last one I saw on IMAX recently. It was awesome!
(Ironically, IMAX screens have a 4.3-to-3 ratio which is much closer to the old 4:3 ratio for TVs back in the day. So, in a sense, I'm now watching awesome modern movies on a large TV screen on IMAX while I stream the other Hollywood releases at home on a 16:9 widescreen TV, which is similar to the "normal" 16.7-to-9 ratio big screen that you find at all movie theaters. )

I don't really understand what people expected or are missing with Civil War. I guess, put another way, I thought it was great. I didn't have specific expectations in watching this movie because I've seen Alex Garland movies before, and expecting something specific would sort of be a mistake in my opinion. I've heard people complain that it doesn't take a stance or make a statement, and I don't agree. It seems like people just wanted it to agree with their left or right preference when it's political statement was instead about something else- bigger than left vs. right. It was pretty scary to me. I felt what it would be like to have war in our country. I had to think about how our perspective on conflicts like this is always through a lens. Also, because it wasn't stooping to the level of 'left' vs. 'right', I think it made a statement that "it doesn't matter who is right or wrong in this pretend conflict--> shouldn't we calm down a bit and lose any and all perverted excitement over what a civil war would look like?". Not my favorite movie of the year, but it made me think and I've been sort of confused to see people ripping on it.

I showed some of the "reviews" they were using to market the movie. They oversold it as a dystopian future war and show most of the action in the trailer. They even marketed it as an IMAX movie but it feels much more like the first episode of an Apple TV series than a big cinematic blockbuster.

    • @jacobholler5534
      @jacobholler5534 25 днів тому +3

@@DarrenVanDam fair points in terms of peopled actually expecting it to have the "broad appeal" of a blockbuster. If you think of Garland movies, at least when I do, they tend to be movies with visual elements that share traits with those of blockbusters. Like, you could take snippets of several of his movies and put big bold letters and exciting music behind it and get the impression it would be a blockbuster. So, I guess the thing is that I never thought Civil War would be a blockbuster. I would say that, even with the marketing, if I expected anything, it was to watch a movie that felt like Red Dawn, or Red State even. I get the sense people thought it was going to be Independence Day or War of the Worlds.

@@alberto5147 As an American, I agree that it was a more nuanced movie that threw a lot of audience members for a loop. I personally loved it while everyone I know that didn't said "it wasn't what I expected it to be". There was also scoffing over the supposed California/Texas alliance, as that is a preposterous pairing, but I believe that was Alex Garland's way of de-politicizing the conflict. That he avoid the origins of the war and which side was fighting for what, exactly, told me that he intentionally wanted the focus to be on the fallout of a modern civil war in the U.S. and what that might look like REGARDLESS of the motivations/politics.
That said, your hilariously failed effort to suggest the movie was "more intelligent"...and therefore "not Anerican" (whoopsie!) was a cheap shot that devalued your entire argument...especially with you suggesting that you possess a higher intellect while simultaneously botching the spelling of America. Hypocrite, much?

For people who have a decent Regal theater in their area, Regal Unlimited is about $20 a month and they are also doing reusable popcorn and pop. Initial cost is $22. Subsequent visits it’s $10 for initial fill with one free refill of each. That deal is good till the end of the year.
Great deal for the weekend matinees that don’t have as many people. I’ve already seen 4 movies in July, and only spent $55 ($20 for Regal Unlimited, $22 for refillable popcorn and drink, $10 for a refil) that’s only $13 per movie!

Cool list but Civil War and The Beekeeper shouldn't be on this list. Civil War isn't bad it's just people were expecting a "war" film not a film about the trials and tribulations of wartime journalism. The Beekeeper was a basic action movie done right like John Wick. It could've definitely gone wrong (like Expendables 4) but it presented itself as nothing but a simple revenge flick. Everything else on the list should be ashamed of itself.

It's worth noting on Madam Web they weren't trying to make a good movie. The main goal for that movie was for Sony to use characters they would lose the rights to if they didn't use them. So from Sony's perspective, use the characters or lose them to Disney/Marvel.
They could have made an effort at least, but sadly they didn't. But Sony retained the rights to the characters for future use.

I LOVED Civil War. I’ve only been to 2 movies in theaters since Covid and this was one of them. I thought the storytelling was excellent, I thought the disconnection was appropriate (and not because it could have happened anywhere. It felt very specifically American.), and I thought staying close to the ground was a chilling way to explore war in a way that films typically. I loved that A24 spent a huge budget on a story about characters, not set pieces with no humanity. Do we have MCU Stockholm Syndrome here? Have we not seen character-driven films that tell small stories on a large stage for so long that we can’t get the bombast out of our heads?

Would have rather had another Max story OR a Furiosa sequel to Fury Road OR some type of tie-in with the music box(es) in Road Warrior and Fury Road. Thank you for another good video. Your comment about the short time period between release in the cinemas and home release is likely the single greatest reason for falling attendance. Certainly for a movie like the Fall Guy which no one would think needs a huge screen to tell its story. If studios made the conscious decision to extend the time to 3-4 months between the theatre release to the DVD and streaming releases then that would pull more people into the theatre. Secondly, with VPN's, we can see some of these movies on streaming services in other countries even if it is not in our own country. Not a movie but Star Trek Prodigy is already streaming on Netflix UK. Damn. The rise of VPN's along with the fragmentation of streaming services; also is bringing us back to the heyday of torrent downloading. So delaying the release of a DVD or HD streaming also means there will not be any decent rips of these movies on torrent sites. Thus killing two birds with one stone. Reducing downloads and getting more people to go to the cinema. .

Civil War: it tried to have a lot of themes and ended up with only one (everyone in a civil war looks the same), and otherwise was visually good, but a wandering mess. Furiosa: nowhere near as good as Fury Road. They shouldn't have tried to recapture the magic - the original was miraculous. I have now made it a point to watch Madame Web because I often get as much from abysmal movies as from good ones. And Dakota Johnson? Nuff said. The Fall Guy: highly recommended. Dune: too good. I would love to know what you recommend for a home theater projector.

Truly appreciate your opinion and I want to thank u for saving my time for better movies . I feel ya , went to see "Quiet Place , Day One" and I was so pissed like 5 or 6 people came in about 15-20 minutes after movie had started and used their cell phone lights to find their seats right in the middle of the theatre , then this woman just to the left of me kept using her phone and her screen kept flashing off and on through half the movie , but the most annoying thing was the person sitting in front of me in a rocker that squeeked every time that he rocked in it , and he rocked & squeeked throughout the entire movie . Of course you probably know the whole movie itself was entirely quiet up to the monster scenes . This was the 1st movie I had been to since "Wakanda forever" and this movie there was a freaking overhead light that wouldn't shutoff for at least 20 minutes into the movie , so yeah I'm done spending good cash for movies that I can't enjoy , I'll just buy the 4k bluray which would be about the same price with popcorn and a drink included and enjoy my movies at home in peace !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mr. Vandam...I hope we can agree to disagree over several of your reviews of movies I've actually seen. I love Dave Patel. But Monkey Man, his 'John Wick goes Bollywood' tale left me unentertained. I enjoyed Argylle, despite all the hate it garnered. The switch ending with Catherine O'Hara and Bryan Cranston going from being the heroine's parents to actually being the super villains was hilarious...as was the end fight scene on 'ice'...complete with technicolor gun battle! And I would say nobody goes to a Jason Statham movie for anything but him. So, I was not disappointed by Beekeeper. Glad we agree on Fall Guy...100%.

I thought Rebel Moon was ok but it was oddly paced. I heard afterwards that Zack wrote it thinking it was going to be a multi episode show and Netflix last minute wanted it turned into movies so he had to cut it up all weird and speed along character development to hit a movie runtime.

Add ALL OF DISNEYS NEW RELEASES to this. I'm hoping Ryan Reynolds will be able to produce the ONLY non flop Disney branch movie in the past year. It's literally the only "mainstream" film I'm excited for after seeing the pushback from Reynolds and even Jackman.

Agreed re your comments on the cinema/theatre experience. Too many ppl spoil the experience considering how much you're paying. I try to go a bit after the release of a big movie to avoid the crowds. Been spoiled by working for a film company and having private cinemas at the office and then having my own at home (before I got divorced! Lol) Love the channel, keep up the good work!
