If you have to whip your animals to get them to run they probably shouldn't be racing. That guy was laying into those mules, no reason for that!

Draft animals require constant command and that type of "whip" is used in dressage to keep the animal focused and non distracted by the environment -- horses and donkeys tend to think in _terms of the surrounding_ ; so keeping a constant input they can feed on their "train of thought" is a good idea, it's the same thing for a horse and a jockey.

@@TheGrmany69 What a pile of 🐂💩! If someone was whipping your ass would they have your attention? My dad had teams his whole life, brother still has teams, neighbor ran plowing competitions every year, no one had to constantly beat their animals to make them work!

That one driver WAS guilty of excessive whip use. Several driver were excessive. A whip is to be used as an extension of the arm to signal the horse.
A driving whip for pairs has a longer lash on it, the tip is ended in a fluffy bit. It is not designed to do harm, but it would certainly cause welts.
Chuck wagon races are not the norm, please don’t judge all carriage drivers by this video. I have never laid into a horse like what you see here, ever. I trained horses & ponies for carriage driving for decades. I loved it!

All that whip use kinda ruined it for me, I would have preferred to focus on the (already) hard working skilled animals, mostly, all I saw was way too much testosterone all pumped up. Made me remember a farm race decades ago, there was a lot of bragging, heckling and some betting going on.

@@DonnaScarpa I agree, I have seen enough to know even with the lazy animals, popping the whip over there back is all that's needed if they have felt it once or twice!
