  • To extend your range on VHF or UHF ham radio, consider a yagi antenna to extend your range. A Yagi antenna focuses your transmit and receive into a much narrower path, increasing distance and readability. This is one option i will be using for my satellite tracker

Elk antennas are the way to go! i love mine, super easy to assemble and no pushnuts!

  • @Hollandlaw1
    @Hollandlaw1 3 роки тому +1

Quick note about those pushnuts: you can use a socket to install those. Find a socket that fits so that the pushnut just barely fits into the rim, but doesn't go down in the socket. Much easier and keeps it straight.

I really like the Arrow antenna. It's the only yagi I bought. I make my own. But that one is worth the money

Thanks for the video. Looks heavy to keep holding that antenna. I’m a new Ham here (in Texas) and I am thinking of mounting a simple ground wave dipole in the attic to hit repeaters in my area. I will make it out of wire and a UHF connector. Anxious to make my first QSO! 73,

Helpful video as I'm looking into getting a Yagi (MFJ-1760) to reach repeaters with my Yaesu FT-60 from the third-floor of my HOA-regulated home (1970s stucco building) that is located dead-center in a valley with mountains on both the north and south. I currently get no repeater coverage using a Diamond SRH77CA whip antenna connected to the FT-60. Subscribed (with notifications!)

3 element on 2, and 5 elements on 70. This is a practical small yagi for extending for coverage at home. Maybe you can hit a repeater at 10+ miles away from home. This will definated more than double or triple your range on getting into repeaters.
Eric - plan on going jet skiing as soon as the rain clears.

Once you get the push-nut started it helps to use a small box end wrench that just slides over the element to help slide the push-nut home. .

I believe you have half the push nuts on backwards. They should bow opposite directions so they can't back out or rattle, and pinch the center support tube. To assist pushing them into place over the elements, first insert the nut into a 1/4"-drive socket, and use the socket as a handle to slide the nut down. Much easier on your fingers.
If you intend to run the antenna vertically polarized, you only need 1 nut on the top, letting the elements "hang", thus making disassembly easy and portable. A wrap of electrical tape holds the elements in place for horizontal use on field day.

Awesome. Just yesterday I watched your video on the Cushcraft 13B2. I'd be curious on how performance is on such a massive antenna versus this HY-Gain which looks much easier to manage!

Great video, I am looking into a Yagi. As a side note, we were in Sebastian and I brought my rig and my Sbb2 mag mount antenna. Which, BTW gets out great in my attic at home on a piece of steel. While in Sebastian, only once did I get out digitally to someone in the Villages. With all the local Sebastian, Vero and Florida system, I thought I would have better luck. My local repeaters here in NY are fine but no Fusion there are two far off that I think the Yagi might be the trick?

Ditto on Mark’s pushnut orientation. Measuring and marking one side of each element before attaching it might make things easier, too. W2RSB.

A section of tubing the inside diameter to fit over those elements would help push those connectors on.

And as you're placing your elements in there and you have both push nuts facing the same direction you could also pull that radiator back off of there or that element whatever you want to call it and use the push nuts over again

You know too I was looking at how that was designed and if you had redrilled the one hole for the driven element to match the rest of them it would have been just fine without bending

May I suggest for portable packing into the field the antenna using ONLY ONE push lock washer ( "LOCK NUT" ) onto the boom =) I would use a rubber-band or a Velcro with a slit along one end /-) Just me =) Thanks for the great review Eric =)

Eric I used "BIG Wheel" antennas ( www.wimo.com/big-wheel-antennas_e.html ) for many years chasing SATs and NO POINTING or gyrations to get a signal =) The "Big Wheel" antenna would see the SAT HORIZON to HORIZON at my home ..... just a suggestion my friend =)

Im curious how good those push nuts are. Can anyone on here give me their past experience with these? You would think that they would not hold the elements to the boom tight enough to make good consistent electrical connection and be electrically noisy, at least after years of use outside on a tower. If that's not the case then that seems like a great cheap easy way to attach elements to the boom. Thanks for the video!

Direct Feed is more for UHF/VHF TV Receiving Yagi's
It should be a Folded Dipole, Gamma, or Hairpin Match which are different ohm's to match impedance to 50 ohm's

Hi Eric. Good video. Unfortunately, and typically, yet another poorly manufactured HY-Gain antenna, similar to the poor manufacturing quality of Moonraker antennas. One could say that the words “HY-Gain”, “Moonraker” and “quality” should not be used in the same sentence! I’ve passed your way many times when using the A1A in Florida, so would have been in easy RF hailing distance of you! Great place to live. Stayed several times with a US Marine buddy in Melbourne, just to your North. Will keep an eye on your UA-cam channel. Iain.
