Elegant Minimalism: Game of Thrones, Making a camper composting toilet

- After using a luggable loo for awhile, I decided to make a sort of composting toilet. This one though is different, pretty (as far as toilets go). It has internal sealed urine collection with outside draining, An odor check valve, and as self cleaning system. A labor of love and headaches as I was designing on the fly from plans on the inside of my head. Let me know what you think...
Nice job!
Dan … That’s not a lou; that’s a work of art!!! I want one!!! Unfortunately, I don’t even have a camper … yet. Very nice job!!! Please send Joyce my warmest regards!!! Until your next video and beyond, y’all take care, be safe, best wishes and God bless!!! Chuck Knight from Buffalo, Texas. 👨🌾✝️🙏🖖👍🏼
Very creative! You addressed many of the issues that we find with our Nature's Head composting toilet. And it looks ✨
Agreed! 🙌
Guessing a lot of viewers want to make something like this. Love the ping pong ball valve and the air vent to make it work better. The washer motor flush is great as well. I will probably lay up one layer of fiberglass on something it will release from and curve it around instead of wood, then add more layers to lock in the shape. Won't be as beautiful, but easier if you work with fiberglass. Thin plastic backsplash or formica would also curve without cutting all the kerfs.
A THING OF BEAUTY, I FILED IT UNDER COLPOSTING TOILET NICE...CREATOR BLESS...doug
i plan on making one with the same geometry but plastic and stainless, thanks a million for sharing!
Brilliance on the inside and outside of your head
super informative and entertaining. Good stuff!
Man you did such a good job of explaining your valuable invention. Congratulations on a job well done. Much appreciated.
Thank you, I was a teacher forever in a previous life. I try to have clarity, don't always succeed. The thing works great btw. 3400 mile trip boondocking in the Canadian Maritimes.
I was planning to buy a Trenllino toilet, but now I want to make yours.
Thank you so, so much for taking the time to make this video! ❤️
That's so nice to hear. A couple of big trips under our belts so far with it. Works great. The fan sips battery power so I leave it on all the time, even when rolling. Absolutely zero odor even after several days. The wife with the small bladder is so pleased.
This is absolutely the best idea and build for an off grid toilet. I will use this pattern for my 12' x 24' Cram-A-Lot Inn located in Alpine, Arkansas. Thank you soo much for sharing your idea.
Thanks for the kind words. If you have any questions later on feel free to ask.
As always, great job!
Wow, you are amazing when it comes to building things or fixing things! I am impressed with this bathroom toilet. So cool! Thanks for sharing, Dan. Hi to your cute wife Joyce 😊
Joyce says "HI" back.
I love the music
Excellent Craftsmanship! Beautiful design, very well finished!! Because you think through your builds - I subbed your channel. I prefer your design compared to all the others I have looked at except the $1500 purchased one. If you were building it today would you change anything? I am about to make one for my box truck rv. Thank you very much for sharing your ideas and making the video!!
Wow! If I had your tools and skill set, I would be unstoppable. Great job! Really is a throne fit for a King and queen. By the way, I finally finished my CTC and can’t wait for her maiden voyage.
I hope we get to see it at some point!
Awesome ideas!❤
Hey!!! Love your craftsmanship. I'm currently building out a throne toilet in my skoolie bus and want to inlay the diverter like you did. Im newer to wood work and not sure how to make it happen....well 😅
How did u do it?
Hope to hear from u soon. In the build process now 🙏
Thnx. It shows using a router at timestamp 19:53 in the video. I used this router bit. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KZM0EP4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_image?ie=UTF8&th=1
WELL DONE! It came out great. This will be a our next upgrade after our current porta-potty.
Thanks for the details. I'm wondering about ping pong ball, interesting solution. I'm curious to see your review video after your current trip.
Travel safe!! cheers
So far, we’re halfway through our trip out on the other end of the Earth in Newfoundland Canada. Mostly we’ve been Boondocking and the commode has been stellar.
I built one very similar about 18 months ago. I shortened it by about 2" to gut under a cabinet door. Wish I had gone a bit shorter yet and put a 3 gallon bucket in instead. It ends up about 8" taller than a normal toilet in that configuration.
YES! I'll be building a little set of foot rests for the wife in the spring. Now she looks like a kid on it with her feet 3" off the floor.
That' a work of art! By the way where did you find that inner piece that diverts the urine?
Thank you. Google 'throne composting toilet' to get to the website for the diverter.
Great job.Shame you need to get underneath the camper to open the valve.
I have since added a valve that I can reach easily with just my hand and other people have to lift a container out inside the camper and carry it outdoors and dump it. Another advantage is that one were Boondocking. I can just open the valve and let it drain when we leave, when your Boondocking usually in the middle of nowhere anyway. Thanks for commenting.
Brilliant
What is the weight? Could one save weight by using expensive "ultralight" birch I've seen advertised, and by bending plywood, say with kerf cuts, in lieu of lumber frame? The gold color is sublime. We should stop calling these composting, since composting requires aeration. Let's say urine-diverting or compostable toilet. Thx!
I agree regarding the name. I call it that because it's what people find familiar. It doesn't weigh that much and all my woodworking inside is maple so in the grand scheme of things the toilet is a small weight item. And the shell is 1/4" plywood so still pretty light. Thnx for your thoughts!
@@CraftsmanontheLake I'm guessing you wouldn't want to make those million kerf cuts with a skilsaw! Anybody who does any woodworking -- especially those who make youtube videos on the topic -- should make use of your techniques. Tremendous content AND video production. The text overlay edits are fantastic. Please consider a design that includes a top lid to cover the whole smash.
PS is it true if you wanted to make changes, such as alter one of the text overlays, you'd have to completely replace the vid and lose all these comments? Seem like a silly youtube limitation. Thx again!
@@3genac Yes, you make the video on the computer then export it as an mp4 file. After that it's done and ready to upload. But you can only edit the original one that's in teh format of the movie editor. So, you can change it then re-upload it. But unfortunately it becomes a new movie, not taking the place of the original so anyone who looked at the old one wouldn't find that one again. Good to get it right the first time or just live with any errors.
Great ideas in the video. Where did you get that urine collector? Really neat.
This one. Chosen because it is very good quality and just the right size. Not cheap though. thronecompostingtoilet.com/shop/diy-composting-toilet/composting-toilet-urine-diverter/
Consider not gluing the top cap of the urine collector to facilitate cleaning. Over time salts from the urine may build up inside the urine reservoir and clog the drain.
Thank you never really planned on doing it
I rinse the urinepart with a mix of water and vinager. No built ups!
A bit of an overbuild, but nicely done.
Nice craftsmanship! What diverter are you using?
This one. I found most others less expensive but far lower quality than this particular one. thronecompostingtoilet.com/shop/diy-compost-toilet/composting-toilet-urine-diverter/
@@CraftsmanontheLakeThanks; yes, I felt like this diverter looked nicer than others I’d been seeing. I’m converting my whole horse trailer into a camper. I really like the way you gave the design a nice elegant look. Nice video; thanks again!
ARE THESE FOR SALE?
Sorry, making one was enough, but the diverter is for sale from Throne
It’s a dry toilet.
Yes, with urine diverted it is.
Nice video and job but would need to send 4 x more than the cost of new toilet to make it
Mine came in at around $200. But I added a lot of stuff. Could be done for $150. A composting toilet bought commercially start at $300 and go up to about $1200. Most are in the $500 range. This isn't a portapotty what uses chemicals and you have to dump it.
