  • This lecture by National Geographic Explorer John Francis, known around the world as the Planetwalker, is organized by the Qualcomm Institute's John Graham, who is a member of the Planetwalk Board of Directors.
Francis has just returned from another trip to China where he has been expanding the Planetwalk experience with the help of Alibaba. Francis has been working at UW Madison developing the Planetlines curriculum that promotes "Pilgrimage into the Environment" and exploring the concept of a "Walking Campus". This idea has attracted a lot of attention from the Alibaba team, and Francis is discussing how it can be accomplished for the people of China.

Our local Marin community was asking about him and many people had stories which led me here. What an extraordinary man.

Dear John Francis! I don't know if you will ever see this comment, but I knew you when I was little. I lived in a yellow house on B Street in Point Reyes in the 70s. My Parents owned the Point Reyes Light newspaper. I remember you being in my living room and playing the banjo for me (at least that's how I remember it :) ). I remember you looking exactly how you look in the thumbnail for this video. I was reminded of you today and came here to post this.

He's my cousin. The family thought he was crazy and working some weird angle but the joke was on them. He is true blue and it's all true. Awhile ago some big production companies bought the rights to the book. Right on John Francis.

I read Planetwalker years ago and loved it. Today for some reason I was reminded of John Francis and went exploring on the web. So glad I did to find out what you are up to today. Thank you for listening to your inner being and following your dream. You inspire me to do the same! Will be great to see the movie!

I met him in 1984 in the middle of the Pasaten Wilderness in Washington State. Then I had the pleasure of hanging out with him again in 1989 when he was working at the Dag Hammarskjold library at the UN in NYC. WALK ON PLANET WALKER!

@@timothyheitzman7244 Hi Tim. In 1984 he had an album of banjo music released called Planet Walk, produced by Ry Cooter, and he made a little money from that. He received a full scholarship to the University of Montana at Missoula. That's where he was on his way to when we ran into him in Washington. He pantomimed very well, played the and banjo at that point. I don't now any sign language so that wouldn't have worked. He ended his vow of silence, so when he finally arrived in NY in 1989, he was talking. John Francis became a Fellow at the Dag Hammerskjold Library at the UN and he got a some money from that. His friend worked for the NY Daily News, and John Francis was featured in the magazine section, and received some sponsorships for clothing and other expenses. You know the expression "one in a million"? John Francis is one in 2 million.

I met him during his silent years in a bar in suburban New York. He was charming. We had a lovely time visiting and getting to know each other a little. I don't remember seeing the banjo but I sure remember his huge backpack and big, kind smile.

I'm happy I saw part of his story this morning on Sunday Morning. Although his story was part of another about loneliness, and not just about him. I've already ordered his book and looking for stuff about him now. Thank you John Francis. Maybe I can learn more about why so many are clear cutting acres and acres of trees around here...
