I actually started reading the new canon books in chronological order; it actually worked pretty well in some areas, like how the Alphabet Squadron books tied nicely with the Aftermath trilogy, which then tied great to Shadow of the Sith. The books having these kinds of connections are pretty rare since new releases are so often scattered throughout the timeline, but when it works, it really really works imo
Yea, I'd say that the only thing that doesn't really work for reading in chronological order is the high republic. I absolutely think Phase 1 should be read before Phase 2.
@@aleclininger Oh yeah for sure. I actually waited until every book in each phase was out, so I could binge the whole phase, rather than jumping back and forth down the timeline. A New Dawn is great recommend for new fans of Hera after the Ahsoka show. Hugely fun underrated read that also digs into the Andor themes of early Rebellion and working under the Empire.
I’ve been wanting to get into Star Wars books for a long time but didn’t know where to start. This was so helpful and I immediately checked out Lost Stars from the library and I’m about to start it right now so thanks a lot!!!
I just got back into reading the Republic Commando series after recently listening to the Bane, Vader/ROTS, and Thrawn trilogies, and the first 4 X-Wing books again, and I plan to read the the Jedi Academy trilogy soon after. Soon enough I’ll have to give my young cousin some recommendations too.
I got back into the novels by reading (well, listening to) the From a Certain Point of View series. They are short stories in honor of the 40th anniversary of the original trilogy, written and read by various people, and dive into the backstories and side-quests from those movies. Things that took place just off camera. They’re mostly lighthearted, although a few will make you cry…
It might not be canon, but I have to recommend Republic Commando as a great series to read if you want to get into SW books, legends or canon. Karen Traviss is a phenomenal writer, and if you like TCW, you will love this. Personally, I also think that since TBB has begun to implement Scorch into the story, reading the Rep Comm series gives you a totally unique perspective on him that makes his involvement that much more intriguing. I wouldn't be surprised if they further his character in season 3 by pulling from Traviss' novels.

Yeah, reading Star Wars books can feel a bit overwhelming at times. Just listen to anything Narrated by Marc Thompson. The Thrawn/Heir to the empire trilogy was simply amazing and everything I could have asked for in a story of events that followed in the wake of episode 4, 5 and 6. I regard it as the real canon over the Disney sequels.
It’s hard for me to get through entire books in general but I have read and re-read the Darth Bane series probably half a dozen times. Stories about the villain are so much more interesting than the alternative to me

This is actually such a timely video since I just started reading SW books and wanted to see which ones I should start with. I'm currently reading Master and Apprentice.
Thanks for this, I’ve went through a good handful of the canon books as well as some legends. Currently on Thrawn Ascendency - lesser evil, will move into the next Thrawn trilogy.
I started reading through the High republic books and I have no idea why so many people hate on them… I just loved exploring a new area of the SWU and the character development is really good throughout the whole series. It kept me on the edge of my seat and I cannot wait for the next one to come out!

Im not much of a book reader but the one book i have read was lost stars like 4 years ago and i loved it sm and have been begging for a grounded show or movies from the perspective of just normal people during the og trilogy, or more specifically a imperial perspective.

I just read Master and Apprentice from Claudia Gray and was f-ing great. Bought it randomly cuz I love Quigon as a character and can't wait t get my hands in another star wars novel 😍
Do you have a video covering all the books that include people from the original trilogy? I really love those, but they are hard to find sometimes, without getting small spoilers about what the books are about. You never spoil anything in telling what they are about, so I would love a list-video like that like once a year or so? For fans of the original trilogy who are in to books, but does not care that much about them unless at least one person from the originals are in them. :D (I have read many more, I just really love the ones with original characters the most.) :)
I wanted to read something similar last year before The Princess and the Scoundrel came out, and I read Last Shot and Leia, Princess of Alderaan, so I’ll second those three recommendations. I was a little challenged by the audiobook of Last Shot, because it jumps around in the timeline, so I also got the ebook version from my library. I think I will continue to do that with future storytelling!
As much as I loved Phase 1 of The High Republic, I just can't keep up, even with just the main novels. I'm so grateful for your coverage of it all, though. Even though it's not the same as reading it myself, I can still get the main ideas thanks to you and Mollie!
assuming you wanted to read literally everything from Star Wars cannon and I do mean everything how do that properly and not feel overwhelmed or like your starting with a bunch of stuff that doesn’t matter
Thrawn was excellent. Highly recommended especially if you've watched Rebels and/or Ahsoka. I'm moving to Alliances and Treason next and then going backwards to tackle the Heir to the Empire trilogy.
You guys got me into the High Republic books! I'm badly dyslexic, so i tend to put off reading as much as I can, but I picked up the audiobooks over the past few months and wow! This series might just be my favourite in SW history,
Im here because for the love of god i cannot get into star wars. My boyfriend has tried to get me to get into it time and time again. I love reading though, one day i told him if i had read starwars i probably would be way more into it. He told me there were books so im really glad you made this video. Hopefully my man will be proud of me and i can actually enjoy myself with this series like everyone else.
I've only ever picked up Dark Discpile by Christie Golden because it was based of episodes that weren't completed for The Clone Wars. I don't find it to be crucial in understanding anything from the series unless you are a diehard Ventress fan, but is is still fantastic nonetheless. I don't know if it's a compliment or an insult to say that I wish these episodes had been animated because I would love to see them made, but everything is written so well that I could just picture how it would have been in the show. The dialogue also feels like it may have just been ripped from the scripts because even if you aren't specifically told who's talking right away, you can tell who it is. Absolutely fantastic. For more information about when this story takes place in the grand scheme of The Clone Wars, it's actually split in half by the Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir comic. My source for this is actually the old chronological list that included the Legacy project stories before they updated it to just the series itself, so if you're doing a big Clone Wars rewatch and want to include everything... - *_Seasons 1-5_* (You likely already know the Chronological order or where to get it.) - *_The Lost Missions_* (That's right, not Season 6, these 13 episodes were advertised as The Lost Missions, and I'll always call them that.) - *_The 4 Crystal Crisis on Utapua Story Reels_* (Originally on StarWars, com, these are only officially available on The Lost Missions Blu-ray, but the Internet is a place where nothing dies. Titles are: A Death on Utapau, In Search of the Crystal, Crystal Crisis, The Big Bang) - *_Dark Disciple Chapters 1-21_* (To my best approximation: 1-7 Lethal Alliance, 8-12 The Mission, 13-17 Conspirators, 18-21 Dark Disciple) - *_Son of Dathomir_* (Each issue is one episode: The Enemy of My Enemy, A Tale of Two Apprentices, Proxy War, Shadow of Dathomir) - *_Dark Disciple Chapters 22-42_* (To my best approximation: 22-25 Saving Vos Part I, 26-30 Saving Vos Part II, 31-36 Traitor, 37-42 The Path) - *_The Final Season_* (Which of course is not in order: 5-8 Ahsoka's Walkabout, 1-4 The Bad Batch, 9-12 The Siege of Mandalore)
I also was blown away by Phasma, but it's not exactly a conventional Star Wars novel. Thrawn (the "First" One) was really great. I also love the art in the comic adaptation and recommend it as a companion piece. I remember when I was starting Thrawn Alliaces I also was thinking about reading a prequel era novel and Galaxy's Edge had just opened and there was a lot of tie in material for that. I ultimately decided to go with Thrawn Alliances because I had just finished Thrawn and Thrawn Treason was about to come out, and - by the force - Thrawn Alliances not only featured a prequel era flashback narrative with Anakin, Padmé and a younger Thrawn, it was also set on Batou (the location of Galaxy's Edge for those who don't know). It was as if Zahn had written a book just for my mood at the time 😅
Ok ok ok so your just not gunna mention the entire aftermath trilogy which is the only trilogy you haven’t mentioned yet which goes over so many characters we know after return if the Jedi plus so many new characters right up till the batter of Jaku and how the empire became the first order it wasn’t mentioned surprising
I’ve been wanting more sequel stories while waiting for the Rey movie, so (in addition to some small Age of Resistance comics) I’m considering borrowing Shadows of the Sith from my local library to catch up.
I tried reading "Light of the Jedi" last year and failed miserably! I really want to get into the High Republic and Star Wars books in general but that one was so unlike what I usually read and I could neither keep up with the multitude of characters and places nor care about any of them as they were switching up so fast! I think I never made it past the first 100 pages but I'm really disappointed and not sure where to go from here :(
Kids multiple. Start with "Truce at Bakura". It's immediately after Endor. You can find Chronological lists for Legends, but the Heir to the Empire trilogy is where you get introduced to the Solo twins. Heir to the Empire trilogy is also the origin of Thrawn and widely regarded as some of the best Star Wars novels.
A New Hope. Go in release order. Do not skip the Ewok films. Also if you can hunt down the theatrical release for your friend instead of special editions. Lucas was wise to start with Luke's story, because otherwise it's a tragedy.
Do you know of a good place to find a list with all the Canon books, ya novels and jr novels? I've been trying to get all the Canon books, and I've gotten a good bit but want to make sure I'm not missing anything
I’m primarily interested in the bounty hunter/underworld stuff, mandalorian stories ( not just din jarin but all mandos) and anything wookie related. I’ve just started the war of the bounty hunters series. Any other recommendations for me
I'd love to get into the High Republic but i find the vast, vast cast of characters so offputting. Personally, I don't think Star Wars works well with that many characters jostling for attention - I have tried to read some of the adult novels but my brain just can't cope with being expected to remember so many new names, new species and character back stories.
There are a lot of guides that can be very helpful. I find it easier to remember all the characters if you know how they look like and how they are related to other characters. And I think you also need some time to really understand the characters and not be confused with so many names. That it all becomes more familiar. But at the begining it can be very overwhelming.
Would reading literally all canon novels in chronological order be a good idea? Im kind of OCD with certain things and always need to watch/read things chronologically hahaha, so id be starting with star wars convergence. Is that a good idea?
Is High Rebuplic phase 1 comics good entry point To High Rebuplic era? I been looking Phase 1 omnibus on local store and im kinda interested of getting it at some point but is it worthy read for someone Whos knowelede of the era comes from Jedi Survivor and couple videos from this channel?
Loved the books, eagerly anticipated 'The Acolyte' on Disney+ to tie in with the story and was DISAPPOINTED in The Acolyte. That's not to take away from the excellent books but the TV show felt cheap (bad makeup, costumes, writing).

Lost Stars is one of my favorite books from Claudia Gray. It's a great recommendation, I think people who like Andor will definitely enjoy it.
Just listen to anything Narrated by Marc Thompson. Im listening to Eye of Darkness right now and he really is adding so much to the book.
I really love his narration, though sometimes his voices are too similar. It’s confusing to hear Ar’alani in the high republic
@nudlezo.4627 With how many books he does, he can only have so many voices in his repertoire haha
I guess I’m pretty sort of experienced. Thanks, Alex!
I got the Heir to the Empire trilogy for Christmas. Already finished the first book and I'm a little over halfway through Dark Force Rising.
Biggest takeaway so far: I already knew from rebels that Thrawn was smart, but he's on a whole other level in these books.
If Sun Tzu & Sherlock Holmes had a baby it would be Grand Admiral Thrawn.
The Aftermath trilogy is underrated. Great characters and stories.
It's a trilogy that kept getting better. Along with the scale of the stories getting larger and larger.
I was just thinking about this question yesterday and was looking for a video in your channel that could help and this videos comes out today hahahaha thanks for that ❤
Yesss! Thank you, I have been requesting this video for a while, it is going to be so helpful ❤
Excellent choices!!! All of these I read and loved.
During this winter I really got back to high republic and today I will receive mission to disaster which is the last story I need to read before getting to phase 2 which I'm really excited.
Star Wars books have always been good and I love them all!!
This is actually such a timely video since I just started reading SW books and wanted to see which ones I should start with. I'm currently reading Master and Apprentice.
Great vid! Just about finished with Phase One of THR and need something like this on where to start with canon comics 👍
Reading bloodline rn and can confirm it’s very good
Currently reading The Rise of the Red Blade. I started reading SW books last year only. Going back and forth between canon and legend, basically reading what interests me. I have to thank your channel to get me into it. I think Light of the Jedi will be my next read.
Lost Stars was incredible. It was the first book I had read for pleasure in years. It reignited my love of reading for fun, and made me a huge fan of Claudia Gray. Her book Leia Princess of Alderaan is also fantastic.

@@PerovNigma Thank you! 😀👍 ❤️
@@Kraviken You're welcome! :)
I got into reading SW books with New Dawn, but I totally agree that Lost Stars is one of the best entry
This series might just be my favourite in SW history,
I've only read the novelizations of the films a few novels back in the 90s and early 2000s and a couple comics.
Rise of the Red Blade and the Jedi Battle Scars book were my favorites.
Im here because for the love of god i cannot get into star wars. My boyfriend has tried to get me to get into it time and time again. I love reading though, one day i told him if i had read starwars i probably would be way more into it. He told me there were books so im really glad you made this video. Hopefully my man will be proud of me and i can actually enjoy myself with this series like everyone else.
it's 2024 and I am still waiting for a sequel to Lost Stars
I am about to read all of the EU novels in chronological order, and then I’ll move on to the canon novels. Wish me luck!
- *_Seasons 1-5_* (You likely already know the Chronological order or where to get it.)
- *_The Lost Missions_* (That's right, not Season 6, these 13 episodes were advertised as The Lost Missions, and I'll always call them that.)
- *_The 4 Crystal Crisis on Utapua Story Reels_* (Originally on StarWars, com, these are only officially available on The Lost Missions Blu-ray, but the Internet is a place where nothing dies. Titles are: A Death on Utapau, In Search of the Crystal, Crystal Crisis, The Big Bang)
- *_Dark Disciple Chapters 1-21_* (To my best approximation: 1-7 Lethal Alliance, 8-12 The Mission, 13-17 Conspirators, 18-21 Dark Disciple)
- *_Son of Dathomir_* (Each issue is one episode: The Enemy of My Enemy, A Tale of Two Apprentices, Proxy War, Shadow of Dathomir)
- *_Dark Disciple Chapters 22-42_* (To my best approximation: 22-25 Saving Vos Part I, 26-30 Saving Vos Part II, 31-36 Traitor, 37-42 The Path)
- *_The Final Season_* (Which of course is not in order: 5-8 Ahsoka's Walkabout, 1-4 The Bad Batch, 9-12 The Siege of Mandalore)
It was as if Zahn had written a book just for my mood at the time 😅
Alright, I need to re-read lost stars! I have such a good memory of that book
Master and Apprentice by Claudia Gray is easily my favorite
Ok ok ok so your just not gunna mention the entire aftermath trilogy which is the only trilogy you haven’t mentioned yet which goes over so many characters we know after return if the Jedi plus so many new characters right up till the batter of Jaku and how the empire became the first order it wasn’t mentioned surprising
I'm reading the thrawn ascendency for the first time but I'm struggling to get into it because of all the new complicated names
Listen to the audiobook while reading along. Thank me later
This video is a freaking masterpiece
Hoping for more novels from Alexander Freed in general but if it's Alphabet Squadron then that would be amazing. Oh and Lost Stars 2!
I’ve been wanting more sequel stories while waiting for the Rey movie, so (in addition to some small Age of Resistance comics) I’m considering borrowing Shadows of the Sith from my local library to catch up.
Add the Aftermath books to the list from Chuck Wendig. Book 1 is good, book 2 and 3 are excellent. They form a bridge between Ep 6 and 7.
Is there a collection or reading order for the High Republic Comics? How about in relation to the novels? Thanks for any help you can provide!
This has led to me reading my first ever Star Wars book - Light of the Jedi and it was absolutely wonderful. Hooked. What's next?
I tried reading "Light of the Jedi" last year and failed miserably! I really want to get into the High Republic and Star Wars books in general but that one was so unlike what I usually read and I could neither keep up with the multitude of characters and places nor care about any of them as they were switching up so fast! I think I never made it past the first 100 pages but I'm really disappointed and not sure where to go from here :(
Bane trilogy BEST start point
I will die on that hill
You should do Comics
Thanks, Alex! 📚
curious, what books follow luke and leia after the battle of endor? when they have kids etc
Question for the Q&A or another video:
I have a friend who has not seen anything Star Wars? What is the best movie to start with any why?
I've been trying to get all the Canon books, and I've gotten a good bit but want to make sure I'm not missing anything
where did you get that t-shirt?
I’m primarily interested in the bounty hunter/underworld stuff, mandalorian stories ( not just din jarin but all mandos) and anything wookie related. I’ve just started the war of the bounty hunters series. Any other recommendations for me
Tales of the Bounty Hunters
Aftermath trilogy are also great if you want to bridge the gap between episodes 6 and 7
I'd love to get into the High Republic but i find the vast, vast cast of characters so offputting.
What can you say about doctor Aphra? is it worth it? I know it's an indiana jones like series, but still, is it worth it?:)
Would reading literally all canon novels in chronological order be a good idea? Im kind of OCD with certain things and always need to watch/read things chronologically hahaha, so id be starting with star wars convergence. Is that a good idea?
High Republic I'd recommend reading release wise. For the test they jump around more so timeline wouldn't hurt or help
What's ur opinion on Rebel Moon? apparently from what I heard it's not good
I think pre Disney books was okay I like heir of the empire
Yeah reading Star wars books can feel a bit overwhelming at times.

Lords of the Sith is another great canon story!
Unless I missed it, there was no Audible plug in this video!
Read star wars legends!
Is there any info on details of the next legends arc that was being worked on? With jaina as the sword of the Jedi and abeloth?
Books
There’s only one right answer
Have you Ever heard the tragedy of Darth Plaguis the wise?
The Legends Books are do much better.
Okay don’t just say back up your point show evidence
👍
Loved the books, eagerly anticipated 'The Acolyte' on Disney+ to tie in with the story and was DISAPPOINTED in The Acolyte. That's not to take away from the excellent books but the TV show felt cheap (bad makeup, costumes, writing).
Heard current cannon. Disliked immediately going to a different video lol
Disney has dropped the ball with Star Wars in a lot of ways, but the novels and comics have been incredible! I love to read and the high Republic stories and characters have been especially well written. The old legends stuff is dope too! I seriously encourage everyone to just pick up one of the books and go
There’s no point. Star Wars is trash now.
How so? Also I doubt you've read the books which this is talking about
@@CRYSTAL_CUSTOMSwhen Star Wars themselves retcon the books, there’s little point in reading
Stick to pre-2015 should be your first advice
This video recommended like 20 books to start reading star wars. That doesn't help at all.
