Yeah, The Mara Effect is epic! The journey the 3 parts take you on is just amazing. As a musician myself, Spiritbox is addictive. Any musician who listens to them pretty quickly hear's the diversity of this band. I'm 47 years old and have been playing music for 35 years. This band is doing things I've rarely heard or felt before except in bands that changed music.
The Mara is old Nordic for nightmare, it was the Mara riding you in the night. I grew up with my grandparents in the 60's and when I was a child they used that, they said the Mara ( a female entity ) came and sat on you at night giving you nightmares. The word goes back and could be found in old Norse/ viking era, where I grew up was a very very small part of Sweden with one of the oldest dialect that goes back to old Norse. This area did then have a few thousands that spoke this dialect, today it's only a few hundred left. When my grandmother was alive she wrote a book every year teaching the dialect and it was used in school, now there is no one left doing it. Anyway, this song with Spiritbox is and has always been my favorite because it showcase their incredible musicianship and of course their awesome music. I love all their songs but as I said this is my favorite by far.
By the way Ryan was just their touring drummer and I think Zev is now their official drummer, they have always been a 3-Piece, before Bill joined the band Mike would program the drums and bass and then do his guitar parts that was on their first EP called Spiritbox which the Mara Effect is on so all this was written by Mike and Courtney made the lyrics and melodies.
So just to clear the air, I was actually a member of the band until I stepped down in Feb of 2020 to focus on being the best Dad I could be; unfortunately not possible if I've gone all the time touring :)

They have never had a drummer who was part of the band. Mike writes all of the music including the drum parts. Depending on what language you translate it from, the Mara is slightly different things. Essentially though, it’s the god of nightmares.
I'm from Vernon BC originally. I remember when stutterfly was uncle Ed's private jet. I've seen them, and secret and whisper (and their previous stuff as the bleeding alarm) more times then I count back in my early 20s growing up in the scene in the Okanagan. Had no idea the drummer in this band was from those bands. I'm having a super weird nostalgia moment now.
@@nathancail7939 he played a few shows with them and played drums in a few videos as well. He was never a full blown member, but did help consult on the drums for some songs.
Amazing choice. Next up you should listen to LORNA SHORE's To the Hellfire. I want to hear your reaction to their orchestration and otherworldly vocalist.
Speaking of bands that are only as good as their drummers, August Burns Red has arguably one of the best drummers in metalcore.
love your videos
Ps: Happy Birthday Howie
Sleep Token is right up your alley. The Offering is what I would recommend for your first song
Spiritbox is one of those bands that's even better live than on their studio recordings. They are awesome. They will be playing here in a few weeks, but they are opening for Limp Bizkit, which...eh, no. I guess I'll hold out for a headlining tour.
Starset - Bringing It Down (They played this acoustically yesterday; first time I've ever heard it acoustic! And yes, Dustin did the screams even thought it was acoustic. It was AWESOME.)
Check out their acoustic release of Constance they just dropped
Patiently waiting for your reaction to Aviations “Outliers”
Hope you have that on your long list of songs 😊
Yes!!!!! Finally!!!!!!
RIP Bill 😭
Ever seen one of those old paintings with a small demon looking thing sitting on a person's chest as they lie in bed? That's a Mara.
Sleep paralysis, there's also a related myth but it's an old hag or witch instead of a demon
The intervals next, please
Don’t make a reaction to it (or do, I’d watch it) but on the Spiritbox YT Mike does a play through of circle with me and it’s INSANE how good of a musician he is.
Liquid Metal all 3 parts should be next. You'll gonna get more in depth analysis and observation on her singing live. Its the best out there
Fucking yes.
Love it! Definitely going to get my music shed shirt after this video!!!
Please please please react to Eidola. They just released a new song/music video.
Forever a Shed Head!
Awesome, thank you 🙏 ShedHead!
The 1 and only guitar solo from Mike....
