Their Serius XM live performance was pretty amazing and she has come a long way vocally since even this. I have to recommend Blessed Be (Live Serius XM). Enjoyed the reaction! Sub'd
Courtney has a podcast where she interviews female friends and whatnot in the music industry called Good For A Girl. At times, she discusses why she has dressed the way she has up to this point. To sum it up with a quote from her “I only have $5 for this t shirt and it goes with everything.” To add a little context, this is 3 seperate songs, with an interlude between parts 1 and 2. It’s from their EP, which also features “Everything’s Eventual,” “Aphids,” and “The Beauty of Suffering.” They did a music video for part 1, and visualizers for 2 and 3. The “Mara,” depending on which language you translate it to is the god of nightmares or death. Also, is that an Architects pullover? Looks awesome.
@@yazma2 definitely worth a listen. I’ve been friends with her husband Mike (guitarist and primary instrumental writer) for like... 17 years, and with her and Bill for a little over a decade each. They’ve all come a long way from their roots, and Courtney hits on a lot of things that brought her to where she is now from where she started (she was in a band called Unicron back in the day, then joined IWABO, and now Spiritbox).
The Mara Effect is from the band's self-titled EP from 2017. The song is divided into three parts + a minute long interlude called 10:16, which is placed between parts 1 and 2. All three parts have a music video on UA-cam.
They're a very versatile band, as I like to say no two songs of theirs sound alike. My song recommendation is the entire Spiritbox discography. Just do it all, it's all worth it, I promise. This was great, keep em coming!
I can't wait to hear more from this band. I think I listen to everything they have on Spotify at least once a week. The only problem is that it's done way to fast.
Yo Yaz. Yeah, there are music videos for these songs. Yes, I said "songs". This one-track version is actually comprised of 3 songs (The Mara Effect Part 1, 2, and 3).
This is their first EP Spiritbox. You should listen to the beauty of suffering live take. This song was included in that EP too. you should listen Holly Roller the official video. You will see her power.
@@yazma2 yes, beauty of suffering is great, but I would recommend listening to this from their live satellite XM video that they released in January. It really is an amazing performance of that song and shows that Courtney is (somehow) still getting better with her vocals.
It's such a baller song. Glad you liked it as much as I do - and yeah part 3 is where it gets really sick. Spiritbox have a huge amount of variety in their arsenal, and they're all bloody good at what they do. Huge fun. If you fancy hearing more I would recommend Trust Fall as an underrated gem, but Belcarra and Holy Roller are well worth checking out too
I love the fact you let reactions be what they are - you don't feel the need to talk (or not talk) to fit any sort of expectation. Even when so tired ;o) Your smile when Courtney goes into boss mode - priceless. So, so pleased you did this video by accident or otherwise. Thumbed and now commented.
Interesting you brought up orchestra. Someone recently did an orchestral cover of these songs. I wouldn't listen to it all the time, but it's pretty cool. This is from a self titled EP with 3 other songs. It's actually 4 tracks. Part 1, 10:16(which is a short 1 min interlude), Part 2, and Part 3. They released a bunch of other songs as singles and recently finished recording their first album after signing with Rise last year. Bleach Bath would be my recommendation to check out next. Edit to add: Coincidentally, the interlude title that turned into a timestamp is right at the beginning of it
My favorite SpiritBox medley; The Mara Effect trilogy (in 4 parts). 🥰 This is beauty, complexity, power and abandon all rolled up in a Courtney soundgasm. One day it will be looked back upon as “old school SpiritBox”.
I love how real you are in your videos. Also I am a big fan of Spiritbox, but I never saw that video before so it was nice to discover it with you. Thank you!
Yaz has been Effected by the Mara! I think you did Blessed Be as well. Holy Roller is a friggin’ banger from them. The holes in the cymbals create a different sound with less sustain. Kind of a cross between a regular crash cymbal and a china...but I’m not a drummer, so...
Mora or Mara is one of the spirits from ancient Slav mythology, a dark one who becomes a beautiful woman to visit men in their dreams, torturing them with desire before killing them. But Mara is also associated with death, rebirth and desire. Nyanaponika Thera has described Mara as "the personification of the forces antagonistic to enlightenment."
Huge Spiritbox fan here, I agree with the comments saying check out the recent Sirius XM live performances (which include part 3 of The Mara Effect). Courtney is even better nowadays than she was back then. Another very different and beautiful song is their latest single Constance! Btw your channel is awesome, I'll be happy to sub :)
One of my favorite studio sessions!! I know Courtney gets a lot of the spotlight & rightly so but the entire band is phucking phenomenal! Mara 3 is off the charts badassary 🤘☮️🤘
Ooooh, the holes in the cymbals are actually interesting. They give the cymbal a faster transient behaviour, so it has a sharper sound when hit and it swings out less. This not only gives it characteristics of Splash cymbals in the dynamics, but maintains also still a deeper tuned sound. If you want to play cymbals fast, it makes for a more precise sound. When used for the hihat, it makes a quite different and faster play possible... //nerd mode=off
21:35 the best way to watch this is on your own. I agree. Nobody will understand this unless they listen to it and absorb it with nobody else around...
At 4:19 in the video my whole day changed when I saw that subtle smile....Okay, now for the serious stuff. I love your reviews as a producer, because you don't just talk about the music, but the look, the sound, the mood, the shift, the ambiance, the production value....your critics are a wholistic look at the art of communicating through the marriage of sound and visuals. It helps too that your face is so expressive....can almost feel what you're feeling before you even speak. Very well done. Thanks.
Awww thank you grizz! You’re totally right - I cannot hide how I feel cus my facial expressions give it all way. My mind likes visuals + sound. It’s how the work together that gets me excited!!!!
Enjoyed the video, Yaz, as always :-) About the holes in the cymbal: @Eric Swannie just said the main thing. From my own experience I can add, that the cymbals are also lighter, that means they are not as loud as normal cymbals, they have a trashy and rough sound and more noise than normal cymbals. And the finish of these cymbals is less clear and brilliant.
Love your reaction videos... Can never go wrong with Spiritbox! Courtney Laplante is ridiculously talented and the rest of the band is top notch. Easy to miss how good they are because of Courtney!
My favorite performance of any song ever. I love it so much that I downloaded the video as an MP3 and added it to my Spotify playlist a while ago.
