Those are mostly popularised by DnD class systems, quite modern interpretation.
Wizard in older usage is connected to being considered wise in a particular field, you can be a "wizard" of any field like say for example a "Tech wizard" if you're competent with computers enough to impress the average person.

If we look at the issue historically. Witches were usually tied to pagan religions and associating with dark forces while wizards/alchemists/magi were usually connected to Mediterranean philosopher cults and alchemy.

    • @andrewcrain5422
      @andrewcrain5422 3 роки тому +15

@@pirig-gal The word itself is not gendered just a reference to associating with dark forces. The word witch was not gendered as well. Historically many of the witch trials that were undertaken in Europe and the Americas were against men as well as women. The association of witches with women exclusively is a fairly modern trend. Sorcery is derived from the Latin word Sort meaning fate, so sorcerers would be a form of oracle/diviner which would have more in common with wizards/magi/alchemists than associating with dark forces.

I still love the imagery of Fringy cracking his knuckles and stretching his arms as he prepares to Google. I can also picture Fringy reading through the websites he finds with some reading glasses on.
That and the "witch and warlock are absolutely different from wizards" followed by the "you didn't even know? you said is so confidently and now you're looking it up to check." crack me up so much.
That along with MauLer's encouragement of the conversation to JLongBone's displeasure made this whole moment absolute gold.
Only thing I miss in this video is Capital O's laugh after JLB said "He had to stretch to Google."

The way I see it, magic users are divided into groups based on what they drive their magic from, like how scientists are divided into groups based on field of study.
Witches use hexes and potions for example, while an alchemist uses science and explosives.
In the context of sorcerer vs wizard, usually sorcerer drive magic from their own pool of magic which is given form through tools like wands. Wizards meanwhile drive their magic through spells, tomes, and artifacts which have inate magic, and can be used through training.

    • @akumasstorytime3910

I saw it more as. A witch and warlock are the same as both make deals with supernatural beings to get their magic, Sorcerers are born with their magic and wizards are regular folk who learn magic by hard work and effort. Which makes Harry Potter a sorcerer not a wizard.

Considering the fact these tings don't actually exist outside of a WIIIDE array of fiction and mythology, they literally CAN'T have the specific meaning Fringy clamed outside the context of a specific fictional setting like marvel or D&D Or the context a mythological/religious framework like Christianity or Wicca. The only definitions words like witch wizard and sorcerer can have outside these aforementioned contexts is "magic user" as there is not enough agreement between the 1000 different versions of these tings for something more specific

It gets even more complicated when you remember, Wanda was altered by the mind stone, so her powers are not entirely natural meaning she was not born with them.

It really depends on where you look. We got the DnD deffinition in the video, but if we look at Harry Potter witches are the equals to wizards whereas in certain folklore witches are the equals to warlocks considering the source of their power. However looking at Lord of the Rings Gandals is classified as a wizard anf his powers comes from a higher power. Galadriel is classified as a witch by Gimli and her power comes from ???. Another potent witch is my bitch of an ex wife whose power comes from allimony cheques so in the end. They're all the same and/or different depending om where you look

  • @poslednisoud

It depends on the universe. For example in Night Watch book series witches and witchers usually charge artifacts to use in combat while sorcerers use power directly. Effectively making the former being able to use more overall energy but their arsenal is not as flexible since they are mostly working with the stuff they prepared in advance.
In MCU the difference seems to be
    1. Witches are natural and study to get more adept, wizards need school to do anything
    2. Witchcraft and wizardry seem to be different schools of the same art since in MoM Strange recognizes whoever pursues Puerto Rico Chavez is using witchcraft and goes to Wanda as more knowledgeable in the field the same way electro-engineer would go to mechanical engineer when it comes to different kind of machine.

Witches tap into surroundings, places of power, hence their protective attitude towards the area they inhabit, they do not feel fine if you are about to undo that. There might an initiation ritual to awake some dorment power but mostly it's a "gift" situation, when a person *have* to live with it like it or not. Warlocks must sell something to whatever power they are commuting with to gain a boon. The first accurance might accidental even, but if they pop they do not go back. Think of it as an addiction.
