It's hard to believe these videos are almost 2 years old. I thank Jimmy, I'm still not automatic with it all but he really did open my eyes by showing me the importance of the major scale and chord structures. Wish I had started that way years ago instead of hunting for patterns.
I may be wrong but I noticed when certain people ask how to practice, or want to know how you practice, what they are really looking for is a shortcut or an answer that will magically make them better without putting in a lot of effort. You see the same people months later with barely any or no improvement at all still searching for that magical answer.
Thanks Jimmy. I really enjoy your videos, your perspective and especially your mastery. I would watch you play at the Glenside Bar and Grill on Sunday evenings when you and the trio would play. I shot those couple grainy videos of you all performing ‘ over the rainbow’ by Harlan, and ‘take the A train’ by Strayhorn.
Well put! I go into same rant when I hear people go all philosophical on practicing. Just effing do it until you know it inside out, be brutally honest to yourself and be focused, persistent & diligent.
That's why I keep my membership. I've been enrolled for over a year and am still working on soloing over Satin Doll using the 5 fingerings; I am a professional procrastinator and my playing abilities prove it! I fully accept that if the school is not working for me it is 100% my fault. Plus I think it is a bargain to have 24 hour access to all that info!
Robert Kahn I agree. It’s an eye opening experience. Wish I could put more into it like when I was a kid,. Tough at 54 with a job and other obligations. I still may give it another shot
Jimmy I was studying with Federico .I learned alot of nice chords but when he played solos they sounded like scales Everyday had to play cmajor 13 +11 Arpeggio or Dm13 If you can not sing it you can not hear it and you can't play it Nobody cares about chords you know or your notes What beautiful chords and notes come out of your instrument Scales are tools for playing I listen first then I play Your EAR and metronome are your best friend I am happy playing my own stuff G13 walk up to Bb13 Am11 Eb9 D9 G7
How to practice! 1. Buy coffee. 2. Spark up a Camel. 3. Turn on TV. 4. Open laptop, look up “symmetry” 5. Play five fingerings in every key. Life is good!
Practice. My humble suggestions. Warm up briefly with scales which you harmonize. Know your standard notation and how to read fluently. Learn specific jazz tunes which become part of your repertoire to the point where you can transpose key on the fly. Aspire to play what you hear and to hear something worth playing. Practice singing to help unite your voice with your voice on the guitar. And cultivate that mental state where you focus intently on listening to the "piano roll music" playing in your mind so that your subconscious plays the notes "automatically". It is a state of intense focus and distraction simultaneously. Reduce any "thinking" to the minimum, such as thinking of the changes as just the root bass notes. It is like Zen. Freedom. A natural high.
The other day Billy was enjoying your Guitar playing..I walked in the room & Billy says " Jimmy Bruno plays great"! That's a huge compliment Jimmy. Hank always said "Practice...........Practice........... Practice.........!! Hank was notorious for keeping the Musician's awake all night at Ma UpChurch's boarding house in Nashville. We love you Jimmy ! I love to see you out playing again & doing your videos !! Love Always, Amy and Billy Garland
you all prolly dont care but does anybody know of a tool to log back into an instagram account?? I stupidly forgot the login password. I appreciate any tricks you can give me!
@Kameron Karsyn i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and im in the hacking process atm. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
Guy goes to a store and says to the man behind the counter, "I was here yesterday but you were closed." The man says "Yeah?" "But your sign says open 24 hours." To which the man replies, "Not in a row."
I'm pretty sure it was actorJackie Cooper who played Jackie in the Little Rascals. Jackie Coogan, also a child actor, later gained great fame as playing Uncle Fester in the Addams Family tv series.
The first youtube teacher that swears :) I love it. I mean, I make youtube videos, and in life, I swearing is part of my vocabulary, but im a chicken shit for not swearing in my videos...Fucking thank you Jimmy, you the fucking man!
Haha this guy is my new favorite on UA-cam 👍😎🔥… and he even plays unbelievable good Jazz guitar too. Perfect dude! -> “how you gonna do that?… easy -> keep doing it until you can do it” 😂👌🎉🎊 holy shit! I just got enlightened 👍
"That's why you need f--g tab!" - ha. Every day a gem. Hey Jimmy, I saw you at Chris' Jazz Cafe around 2005. I was pretty loaded but you played amazingly, I saw ya at the bar and you shook our hands and were very polite. You were playing with a trio, a couple young guys if I remember correctly. Anyway, that was awesome. These are awesome. Gonna sign up for your school this week.
A guy meets a girl at a bar and they hit it off pretty well. She says "Let's go to my place and have some fun". They're going at it and she stops him and says "Let's do 69". He says "I don't know what that is". She says "Don't worry. I'll take care of you." He's eating away and all of a sudden there's a kernel of corn under his tongue. He says"what the hell is this" She says "never mind". He goes back to business and after a minute, he finds a piece of lettuce in his mouth. Again he says" What the fuck?" She says " I told you not to worry about it." Back again and he finds a lima bean. He says " What the hell is going on with you? Are you sick or something?" She says "No but the guy before you was".
When Bruce Lee said that he fears not who practiced 10000 kicks only once but fears who practiced one kick 10000 times, is he just making an abstract example or is a person who has practiced one move many times, a force to be reckoned with?
I like what Tommy said about having fuck you money. I don't go out and play except for benefit stuff. Currently I play 2 days a week at my neighborhood cancer center. They don't care if I stink or if the suckage factor is too high. They don't really don't care when I show up and most of the patients appreciated it when I play. I won't do a paying gig anymore. It's just too annoying.
As usual, your advise reveals common sense. Thanks. Can you offer a few tips on using triplet lines over the V chord? Practice, repetition? Yes, but would you show a specific example in context of a tune? Thanks in advance Jimmy! ~Don
Great video Mr. Bruno, I don't think you're bitter, I agree with you, there's such a lack of discipline in our society today, everyone wants it instantly & no one takes the time to understand anything, the music has turned into a sad joke, miss the good 'ol days! Great video sir, stay safe my friend, Rock On & God Bless!!!
what does he mean "you gotta move"? you gotta tour? or does he mean to city?. i'm not trying to make it as a pro musician personally so that's probably why i dont get what he means.
Difficult positions where part of a finger keeps fogging a string, one can practice over and over and still have issues with this. Different hand sizes, etc. then I think it's time for a teacher to spot problems, like you're holding the guitar in a way that's making it more difficult. Some people have a kind of masochistic personality towards themselves, and would rather fight the situation than calm down and experiment. Know your nature before you shove your DNA into the spirals.
my beloved late teacher's motivation when you were slacking off " while writing chart, You know the last couple of lessons, it sucked, you still have to pay me the 50 dollars. By the way there are 5 guys waiting to get into the studio" me. I hear ya. nothing like NYC reality.
Yeah,.... you're bitter, face it. LOL But... You're "you" and a great teacher. I do miss some of your more "gentle" side (relative to you... not others!) lessons that you have on your earlier workshop lessons. And I wish you would continue to teach more tunes the way you did on Darn That Dream. I know you say "they're all alike" and "if you can play this then you can play that", but the fact is I learn something different almost every time you teach a different tune.
Sometimes the lightbulbs are LEDs! Bright! Symmetry, Boom! The five fingerings are in my fingers, rapidly solidify in my brain, Practice. Bored? Play a tune, the same tune, in each one of the five fingerings, in both octaves, ‘in all12 keys’ . I Play That’s Amore, by Dino, because all the great guitarists (the majority) are Italian! I think you are a better teacher after the TBI than before! No Nonsense Guitar became No Bullshit Guitar! Keep up the “Lessons from the Bunker.” Thanks
How to practice, no duh, you do it the same way you learn anything else, repeat and pay attention. The problem is focus. That’s what you need to give a chat on.
Here 's a joke for you : A struggling musician (without the fuck you money:-))decided it was time to sell his dog so he took it to a local impresario, who seems mildly annoyed at this guy. The impresario says “Listen, I’ve got plenty of dogs who do fuckin' tricks abd all, jump through hoops etc. Tell you what, don't need another one”. The guy says, “No, look, just give him a chance. You’ll be impressed, I promise. This dog can talk!” So the impresario, mildly bemused, gives him his chance. The guy says to his dog, “Ok, listen boy, what part of a house sits on top of it?” The dog thinks about it, wags his tail, and says “roof!” The impresario, no longer amused, says, “Alright, that’s not fucking talking, that’s just a learned response!” The guy says, “No, give him a chance, he’s a just getting warmed up.” The impresario says, “Alright, one more go.” So the guy says, “Ok boy, if a surface isn’t smooth, then its…?” The dog wags his tail and says, “ruff!” The impresario is now pretty fed up, and says to the guy, “Alright, you’ve had your chance, get the fuck out of here!" The guy begs him for a last chance, and the impresario says, “Alright, but you’re wasting my time.” So the guy says to his dog, “Listen boy, who was the greatest composer of twentieth century classical choral music?” And the dog wags his tail and says, “Orff!” So the impresario kicks the guy and his dog out. And they’re walking down the street, all sad and depressed. And the dog turns to him and says, “You think I should have said Stravinsky?”
Hahaha! Jimmy, don’t jump all over me, but you do cuss a lot! But, I can look past that and see the value in what you’re saying and doing. You’re a dynamite player and I respect your years of experience, as I’m still trying to get where you are. Keep these videos coming!
"I have plenty of f*ck you money" 😂😂👌 classic line!
I love Jimmy, he sounds like the critical voice in my head. Tough love, loving the lessons fella.
It's hard to believe these videos are almost 2 years old. I thank Jimmy, I'm still not automatic with it all but he really did open my eyes by showing me the importance of the major scale and chord structures. Wish I had started that way years ago instead of hunting for patterns.
When I was younger I wanted to be older ....this shit is not what I expected
"Don't practice until you get it right, practice until you can't get it wrong"
Jimmy freaking love you man.
I was one of your students back in the 90's
In college
I still listen to you still this day.
30 years later
The best most refreshing lesson I’ve seen. Fucking unorthodox beauty.
I may be wrong but I noticed when certain people ask how to practice, or want to know how you practice, what they are really looking for is a shortcut or an answer that will magically make them better without putting in a lot of effort. You see the same people months later with barely any or no improvement at all still searching for that magical answer.
the David Goggins of jazz guitar, i love it
😂
Great Vid, no BS advice from someone who really knows what they are talking about, and a wonderful musician. Thanks for the upload Jimmy
Thanks Jimmy. I really enjoy your videos, your perspective and especially your mastery. I would watch you play at the Glenside Bar and Grill on Sunday evenings when you and the trio would play. Best motivational speech on practicing
Well put! I go into same rant when I hear people go all philosophical on practicing. Just effing do it until you know it inside out, be brutally honest to yourself and be focused, persistent & diligent.
You always make it look so easy. Your Tips in Musicality and Memorizing are so needed. Thanks.
The last two videos almost make this dropout from the workshop want to try again.

Do it! You. Do it!
NO REGRETS down the road.
All in Mano. You get out, what you put in.
Even five minutes a day.
You fuckers talk like you're 90 years old. Get at it, you have life experience on me. Surely that means something on the fretboard.
This is the straight up truth. No bs. Love it
Jimmy
I was studying with Federico .I learned alot of nice chords but when he played solos they sounded like scales Everyday had to play cmajor 13 +11 Arpeggio or Dm13
If you can not sing it you can not hear it and you can't play it
Nobody cares about chords you know or your notes
What beautiful chords and notes come out of your instrument
Scales are tools for playing
I listen first then I play
Your EAR and metronome are your best friend
I am happy playing my own stuff
G13 walk up to Bb13 Am11 Eb9 D9 G7
video can be summarized with the 1st 43 seconds. love this dude
You shoot from the hip Jimmy! Love you 💯🎸🎶🎵💞
Lol😂😂😂
You are too funny👍🎩👍
How to practice!
1. Buy coffee.
2. Spark up a Camel.
3. Turn on TV.
4. Open laptop, look up “symmetry”
5. Play five fingerings in every key.
Life is good!
Thank you Jimmy for your straight up advice !
Should be titled "How to f-ing practice."
😂😂
Thanks for the great advice. So how do I practice?
Man i wish i met a guy like you when i was a teenager and first picked up a guitar
Ditto

Jimmy has earned the right to do what ever the frick he wants to. But, it terrifies me to think of our world without him in it. Long may you run Sah 🫡
@@climbtibetsome say “stress is the killer..” and “20% of people that die from lung cancer haven’t even smoked” 😎 stay cool bro
Your videos are always worth watching. If you were my teacher, I'd be scared NOT to practice!
The fear of looking like a slacker to your teacher that calls you on your bs is a huge motivator.
The other day Billy was enjoying your Guitar playing..I walked in the room & Billy says " Jimmy Bruno plays great"! That's a huge compliment Jimmy. Hank always said "Practice...........Practice........... Practice.........!!

take note about this guy boys, even it seems easy, remember that the right way is the easy way, that's why he explains things so lively and clear.
I'm pretty sure it was actorJackie Cooper who played Jackie in the Little Rascals. Jackie Coogan, also a child actor, later gained great fame as playing Uncle Fester in the Addams Family tv series.
Memorize tunes. It’s a huge benefit to not have to look at a chart all the time.
Looking forward to you demonstrating any of the 5 fingerings over a ii-V-I that you mentioned previously.
Thanks for Videos Jimmy, insightful and inspiring as always.
Jackie Cooper maybe? He was in the Little Rascals.
