As a kid, I would watch interviews with hockey players and it was always the same: French-speaking players would put a « eueueuh » at the end of every sentence, English-speaking players would put a « aaah » 😁
They have P.R. people teaching them now so they don’t look dumb, and you don’t see it as much anymore

Hearing more casual French is so good and helpful, I always feel like I'm too formal and sound out of place.
ah yeah it really depends in which context, it's important to know how to be a bit informal sometimes^^
@deep hich I'd disagree - I've heard french people get confused about what word or spelling they're supposed to use because of all the rules 😜
I'm better at casual because I get most of it from my french husband and toddler. Anything I learnt at school is dead 😂
@Zbriu Yes. A ton of native French speakers don't speak it properly. Since there is no real logic in lots of the rules, it's either you know or you don't.
In France the language has been weaponised to create a divide between the normal people and the "higher classes".
Look what they say at 6:13 "liaisons". It might be a choice from a grammatical pov, but to me, it's not a choice. Don't make them, sound uneducated. Make the wrong ones, sound uneducated.
So I'm not surprised to hear that people feel judges when speaking.
You're never too formal nor rigourous. However, foreigners may make mistakes.
PS do you sometimes eat escalopes?
My cousin went to a French school with him in Nantes around 10 years ago. That´s probably why his French is so good, many years of experience and learning!

This mixing of Formal and Informal, I do that a LOT in my own language LOL
Moi aussi. Perhaps this is a quirk of language (and in my case English) where we use formal language in a playful, almost satirical way. For example, to state the obvious eg. If someone didn’t study for their test and as a result they failed you could say “I can’t possibly imagine why (you failed)”. Does this make sense?
When you guys explained the "Je suis ici/Je suis là" I was laughing because as a french canadian from Quebec we say "J'suis lô" when we try to be informal 😂 quebec french is so bad haha
haha :)) oh no it's not bad it's just different, the "a" is also pronounced "o" in some regions of the north of France too ^^
@@Street_French je dois avouer que le français du nord de la France ressemble beaucoup à celui des Québecois si on enlève les expressions développées aux cours des centenaires ici. On voit vraiment que les colonistes venaient en majorité de cette région.

His french is amazing. Actually it would be sad if he lost his accent. It doesn't stop you from understanding anything and makes his french seem even more natural. Francophones have many different accents. At this level he better keep it. Rather than sound like a Parisian caricature. We could add his accent to the Francophones accents, since he is Francophone.

I’m going to take some inspiration from him and slow down a bit when I speak. I do find when I’m nervous I speak too quickly and trip over my words a bit but really there’s no need. Thanks for the tips guys!

C’est clair qu’il est anglophone. Son accent n’est pas aussi bon que celui de Bradley Cooper, mais sa grammaire et fluidité sont vraiment supérieures. Mais quand même! Bravo, Freddie! Malheureusement, on trouve trop peu d’anglophones qui parlent aussi bien qu’eux.

To be fair we don't have much of a reason to. English gets used in business and tourist spots. And most of media like TV is in English.

@@Kebbab.213 right 🙂 And having French surrounding you is harder unless you move there. So it's not surprising the English aren't so good at speaking it - most reference points probably come from some badly faked accent on English TV 😅 Although sources of learning are better these days with UA-cam and whatnot, obviously ☺️

LOL! I like how Freddie stylistically basically speaks in French exactly the way he does in English. I watch a lot of Late Night TV shows here in the US (or used to pre-pandemic) and I’d see him in interviews a lot for his Dr show, and he mixes formal with informal a lot. I noticed because I do it too. I think it may be a bit of a “nerdy” type person thing 😂 🤓. Anyway, this was interesting because he’s so different from other non-native French speaking celebs and examples I’ve seen/heard. He might just be my “person to copy” lol! Or maybe not, I’m not even an actual French student yet, just sort of trying to pick up what I can from the internet, so he’s too advanced for me right now.

It's interesting what he said about having a "model". Like, I surely have a Brazilian accent, but it's probably somewhat canadian because as a kid I used to talk to canadian friend on the microphone via MSN and later, around 2002 i became a huge fan of Avril Lavigne and I've noticed i pronounce word like "Home", "House" and "Out" very canadian. My french I stil don't have a real model, perhaps "Hugo" from "Hugo Décrypte" will end up being mine.
That’s so weird to hear English native speakers speaking French and reacting to French prononciation and else, when you’re a native French speaker.

Freddie Highmore speaks French like most Canadian politicians do when English is their first language. A lot of Canadian French speakers in Canada whose first language is French appreciates it when the English speaking Canadians attempt to speak and learned French. Even if it's not the best French they ever heard. When you mention Québec how true you are about the difference in the French spoken, and it's not only because the French accent either. My parents when they were alive spoke the Acadian French because of them being Acadians it also is a little bit different then the Quebecois Francais. Different regions of Canada speak French with different accents. In Moncton New Brunswick knows at the capitol of Acadia or Acadie the younger French speaking generation in that city speak a French dialect called Chaic where they speak both French and English when they are speaking, while the older generation speak their usual Acadian French. It makes it also easier also for the English speakers to understand what the younger generation of Acadians are saying too. I live in Northern Ontario, Canada where we have a lot of French speakers, most of them came from Québec originally and some have been here since the old pioneer days in Upper Canada. It must be weird to the Parisian French speakers to hear a French Canadian Quebecois French speaker Prime Minister Justin Trudeau from Montréal PQ speak French in France when talking to France's President Emmanuel Macron? He's from the same part of the world as me and yes, the French ou is really difficult for us along with the French r. I've been living in France for 5 years and I can sometimes do the ou thing and sometimes I can't. I've cracked the r now though 😉 Great video thanks 😊

Almost all my family migrated from france to the US. Louisiana, USA has a huge portion of French speakers. I do believe Over time the French is broken, especially the youngest generations. My mother & grandparents spoke more French than English! My understanding is that the French were the most stubborn they did NOT want to give up the language or their heritage😂
In my opinion, you should adapt to local life and forget the imported habits. Socrate : in Greece do like the Greeks. Please also note that cajun is much local and hard to understand.

Le film était basé sur un roman de Peter Mayle, l'auteur du livre « A Year in Provence » qui a été transformé en une série télévisée britannique.

I would be curious to know your point of view about a couple of French-language UA-camrs.
Patti Lynn Q is an American/Canadian UA-camr who does all her videos in French (married to a French person and lived there for years); For me, she has an accent but she speaks so well (from my point of view) in terms of fluidity and it seems very natural, but I don't know if it's just because I'm also understanding from an English-language point of view.
And Sandrea is a native speaker of French (who also happens to speak English extremely well) who does her videos in French. I find her accent extremely easy to understand and I was wondering if she has the Paris accent or some other region.

These are just some that I like. The ones aimed at native speakers are more challenging to understand, esp Cyprien, in my opinion. But you can go into the settings of each video and slow down the speed to 75% or 50% if they're going too fast, and some of them have subtitles available in the settings as well.

I’m so conflicted in learning casual vs. formal conversational French. I want to speak like how I hear in the streets of Paris. However, I went to dinner with some older, rich people and the waiter was speaking in a very formal way and they were so impressed. They kept raving about his formal style and how he must be from a good family, etc. It made me want to learn and speak in the formal way. But I had a classmate (who was born and raised in Paris) who said that I shouldn’t be formal because people will not like conversing with me; partially because they might think I’m stuck up or because they will feel the need to inconvenience themselves to speak formally, too.
ah yeah I understand. but why do you really want to learn super formal French ? just to impress some French old rich people and to appear a certain way ? Do you even speak that way in your own language? I don't know if that's the best motivation.
if all you do is hang out with them then do it. but if you mostly hang out with people your age then it won't make sense to speak like that.
But you can make it your goal to learn all the forms of French language (slang, informal, standard, polite and super formal). And then you'll be able to adapt your speach to different people. Just don't put too much pressure on yourself and know it will take time. one step at a time :)
