Also, best Panasonic 9mm F1.7 review out there after I have watched half a dozen other videos or so! This video deserves like 20x more views. Enjoying your photos Emily! Keep it up. I am definitely buying this lens once it is available in Malaysia, and the "when" is a very big question.
I've just discovered Micro Four Nerds and it's great. I've been following Robin for a while and, wow, what a classy guy, to stop in and say some words of support here. Kudos to both of you.
I'd be an idiot to ignore both yourself and Emily if I did not get the 9mm lens. I mainly got the 7.5 however my main gripe for the lens is that it can give a very blue cast if you don't keep on top of manual white balance. BTW I thoroughly enjoy watching your channel. 😀
I’m impressed with the aperture and price. It’s the same $499 USD as the Laowa 9mm f2.8, which is manual focus. Thanks for the review Emily, lovely photos as always.👍🏻😁
This lens is a (compact) BEAST! I can’t wait to use it more! What do you reckon?? OH! And I’ve uploaded some unedited images on the accompanying blog post at microfournerds.com if you’d like to see more unedited images from this lens
This is in my opinion the best review of this lens period! Great job Emily. I bought one a few weeks ago in anticipation of my family trip to Italy. Love your wide angel composition/perspective shots quite a fair bit and hope I can do just as half as you with this lens when I am back from my trip :-). Cheers....
Thanks for sharing. What a nice video and a great idea to film/vlog on that lens. You actually gave me an idea that I'm going to use in one of my videos😀
Wow! You are so so perfect and awesome in reviewing each and every feature of any lens thrown at you.....newly launched or otherwise.... I loved the way you explained everything with intricate detail and elaboration right up to post processing on computer..your video is flawless from beginning to the end....enchanting and mesmering ....but more jaw dropping because I hardly get to watch any reviews by female photographers on UA-cam as perfect as yours. Now time for me to collect enough money to buy this lens..A big thank you.🎉
The only one missing in my primes lenses with AF, finally! 9mm1.7, 17mm1.8, 25mm1.4ii, 45mm1.2, 75mm1.8... Perfect! Thanks for this great review (again)
I always like final images that you create, especially colors and moods. I mostly shoot with Sonys recently, but whenever I do editing in post, always go with your luts first and usually that's all I need 😀
Do you think Olympus will follow suit with a M.Zuiko 9mm f/1.8 Premium? Right now all they have is the body cap lens that I enjoy, but it's not the same obvs. Would love this, but I prefer the M.Zuiko glass over the Lumix (especially as I only shoot Olympus bodies.)
Thank you!! I was looking for a wide angle prime to go with my Lumix 14-140mm everyday carry, to shoot indoors at castles and churches... Just like you are doing in this video! Love it!
All the way through I was thinking this lens is going to be mega for Astro, so I smiled when you said pretty much the same at the end. Fast, sharp to the edge and wide, what's not to like! I really enjoyed the Vlog/review Emily, cheers!
A cool thing about the gh6 with this lens is if you're a 4k video shooter not only will it give you 18mm equiv. with the full sensor readout but the pixel to pixel mode will give you 25mm equiv. 2 very useful focal lengths for video.
Another excellent review, Emily. Thank you. 🙂 I just took delivery of a Lumix G9 today, so am super-excited to see that the Lumix-Leica collaboration is fit and well. Paul 😎
Tried this lens for astro tonight, just arrived at 3pm, on g9, wow, out with it tonight tried astrophotos on Orion, moonshine a bit bright but impressive results compared to 12 - 60 panaleica and Panasonic Leica 25mm f1.4, the amount of stars was just amazing, manual at about 6 seconds thanks for your site, Colin.
Dear Emily, congrats for your perfect description. Can I have your dear suggest for buying a travel landscape lens? Is it better the fixed 9 mm summilux f 1.7 (also considering sunset and sunrise in lowlight) or I can go also to a 12-35 f.2.8 that is a small zomm but enough clear? I just have 35-100 f.2.8. for indoor sport shooting and it's quite nice. Now for my travel in mountain and for general use i have a 14-140 f.3.5-5.6. I also take a look to a 7-14 or to the most expansive 8-18. Thanks and regards from Italy.
Now that you have had your 9mm lens for about a year do you still use and love it? And have you done any Astro with this lens please? I bought my Laowa 7.5mm lens long before the 9mm was available. It’s a great lens but having to put duct tape over the focusing ring isn’t really a good look.🫣🫣 I’m seriously thinking of selling my 7.5 and a couple of other unused lenses towards a 9mm beastie.
It is such a joy to watch your videos. Great content and real reviews with amazing images not too focused on the technical side. Plus, you always make me smile with your wonderful personality. Thank you.
I love this review! Best on UA-cam for sure! But based on the f-stops you were using throughout the video, I feel like my Leica 8-18 could get the same results while also being able to zoom in if needed. You were normally at f4 or f8 which would means you could have used the 8-18 for this video and probably achieved almost the same results. Thoughts?
Thanks for another great vid - the best MFT channel by far. Re: this lens - is it a big disadvantage for landscape having a fixed focal length? I’m looking for a small, light super wide, weather-proofed lens for mountains/landscape (whilst hiking)… this seems a great option..
Also I can see the jello even while you're stationary. Does your cam have digital stabe? If so, does it cancel out the warpy? If it does, how much % of a crop does the stabe take?
@@MicroFourNerds ahh okay thanks for the reply... i wanna pounce. I have olympus em1mkiii and it has around a 10% crop for digital stabe which MIGHT negate the warpy. Just there are no shops here that have it in stock for testing. I have to buy it to test. 😐🫨
@HeroVange it's a great lens! Also bear in mind I was holding my camera by hand and not with any mini tripod etc so you can definitely minimise and jello by walking sensibly and using a mini tripod 😊
Ooooh, that's a nice little lens to say the least... Absolutely love how small and lightweight it is too. And wow, it isn't at some insanely expensive price either too, which is a really nice thing on top of it all!
Great video Emily! This lense is on my hitlist, i've been narrowing down a new lense for Astrophotography. I'm still torn between the Summilux 9mm f1.7 and 12mm f1.4 lenses.
Smashing review, nice lens. I'm not much into the video side of things, love my GX8, do you think they'll bring out a high end more photo sentric camera
While there are a lot of reasons why you'd pick this 9mm over the 10-25mm, I'm curious to see a side by side of the 9mm vs. the 10mm of the 10-25mm is it a notable jump or not of quality/rectilinarily?
Beautiful review and so right to the most important points! I am definitely going to get one after your review. I have a slight concern on the purple blobs when using it with Olympus camera. But I think it will manage and don't see why I shouldn't get one. Cheers.
Well done Emily! Great review. I think this is a very important lens for Panasonic MFT. They appear to have executed it exceptionally well. I’m definitely going to buy it (I have never said that about any item of photography gear upon release before). Prior to this lens I was seriously thinking about buying a Canon RF mount camera and the newish (and inexpensive) RF 16mm F2.8. The vlog warping in the corners on that lens (and many other FF ultra wide lenses) seems much worse than this new Panasonic Leica lens. Have you had a chance to compare the 9mm with FF cameras with lenses having a similar equivalent focal length? As mentioned by another in the comments, there is a bit of focus hunting around the 4 minute mark: we’re you using the focus limiter function in the GH6? Finally, thank you for responding to my recent comment on another of your videos expressing enthusiasm for this (then rumoured) 9mm lens. As you were obviously under a non-disclosure agreement at that time, it was most courteous of you to do so (without giving the game away of course)!
Unfortunately I only have the Samyang 14mm on my full frame camera as the closest comparison, which is a bit too wide for a fair “jello” test. I think (to my eyes!) the wobble at 4 mins is more a bit of jello, than a loss of focus. I thought the focus was really good throughout my tests 😊 And yes, I’m so glad to be able to talk about this lens now!! Thanks for watching and commenting it’s much appreciated! 📸🙏
@@MicroFourNerds re jello/warping, yes there is a bit of that in the corner, however there is also I think a sign of a sneaky background pulse, visible on the building to the right of your head. I don’t have the GH6 but my understanding (hope) is that the focus limiter can eliminate that sort of pulsing?
Great video, I am looking for a small, light, wide and sharp lens for real estate videos on a gimbal. I have pretty much made up my mind on this lens but also looked at the Olympus 9-18mm which I can get for about £150 cheaper but it's F4-5.6 so no where near as good as the 1.7. My question would be how much do you have to stop down the 1.7 so it's sharp across the whole frame? I think you have owned both so would love your opinion.
Hi! Honestly this 9mm f1.7 is a feat of engineering. I would be happy shooting it wide open - in my pixel peeping it is SO sharp even at the edges. You could stop ot down slightly to 2.8 or f4 just.to be safe but it's such a great quality lens wide open
Emily, is there any chance of a comparison review between this and the new Laowa 6mm? I was all set to save for this lens but I'm seeing such good things about the new laowa that I just can't decide. I mean 6mm!!!
Great reviev - thank you - but one more question: Is it able to cover a total 90 degree horizontal angle of view ? Example: The camera is positioned in an 45 half angle in a corner of a room , hall or cross gangway. Do you see the left and the right wall ? I call it the 90 degree challenge
Nice video and review. Was wondering, what's the best option for compact and light interchangeable lens m43 camera at the moment? Is it worth going m43 at all or do new APSC cameras make m43 obsolete?
Hmm I guess it depends on what glass you’re invested in. Both options are great. Most m43 glass will be smaller, which is where you’ll make the most ground as a full combo. I have the G100 which is awesome!
Super review of this very tempting new lens! Love the use of Liverpool as a backdrop. I had an M.Zuiko 9-18mm which I sold to buy a an Oly Pro 12-40 f2.8, which I love. But I do miss the 9mm end very much. I'm off to Stockholm in mid December for a few days and so I'm bound to need an extra wide lens AND low light performance - so I must by this Lumix Leica 9mm f1.7 to take with me, right?!
Wonderful review on this lens! I just picked one up, and notice that I hear the autofocus pretty audibly when I half press on the shutter. Do you notice this on yours? Or should I be concerned that this is a defect on mine?
Hi Emily! Another lovely video of yours 🙌🏻 Let me ask you a quick question, if you have to choose only one, will it be this lens, the Lumix 9mm 1.7 or the Laowa 6mm f2.0? Thank you so much in advance!!
Oooo good question. So if you want ULTRA wide there's nothing really to beat the 6mm! The 9mm is more conventional (18mm in full frame terms) but still super wide and very versatile. For my needs personally I think the 9mm is plenty, and I love the Leica quality and auto focus. But some situations really benefit from the super wide 6mm
@@MicroFourNerds While I was watching another video of yours about Astrophotography I made my decision… I’ll go for the 9mm because it is weather sealed and I’m planning being using it for Astro, so better be sure that my lens doesn’t die in the attempt. I love you! Stay brilliant as usual and see you!
Great review as always! would you recommend this over a used lumix leica 12mm 1.4? i mainly take shoot on a sunny day in Australia, mostly surfboards and ocean or beach. Thanks
The best M43s lens ever made. The only reason I keep thinking about M43 although I own the S5ii right now and the 24 mm is amazing, but I still think about this 9mm leica 1.7...
I was really waiting for this lens, today arrived my new 15mm f1.7 and for sure the 9mm will be a fantastic pair as soon as will be possible to buy in Italy
hello, I have a pen-f with 30mm sigma and 42.5 nocticron and I need a compact lens that is hard to detach from my camera like the leica 9mm 1.7 or the leica 15mm 1.7 or the 20mm? I hope but not I think the 9mm has the same softness and leica look ... anyway I am interested in the color rendering ... advice?
Late to comment, but this video brought me to grab closest lens I have in the cupboard before hitting Italy for a forthnight. The Oly 9mm Body Cap Lens (BCL), it is a very different beast, but allowed me to get familiar with the 9mm Angle of View, and it is great fun. Ended up "glueing" it to the GM5, and shooting conventional lenses on the GX9. Checking stock daily in the Norwegian shops for the PL9, I am getting one, and I blame you Emily! 🙂
I have a Laowa 7.5mm and am trying to figure out how to improve manual focus. I use it on my Gh5 or G85 and mostly for video. Any suggestion? Also Laowa came out with a 6mm. Is it worth getting this even if I already have a 7.5mm? Thank you.
Great video and photos! I have all the three lenses and enjoy it very much. I have a doubt if to buy an olympus Zuiko 17mm, do you think is worth to buy it or the 17mm Artisan I have is enough?
Edge sharpness and auto focus are the benefits of upgrading. The edge sharpness is much better with the oly 17mm, as you’d expect with the price! But I still think the TTArtisan 17mm is brilliant, especially once stopped down a bit 😊
Love how you pixel peep at 400% to get through the UA-cam compression. Also interesting how well the shadows can be brought up on the GH6, especially with so many folks saying the shadows at low ISO values are worse than the GH5. If you're looking for any video ideas, you could do a side by side comparison of the GH5 and GH6 showing usable dynamic range in photos at ISO 100/200. This could be expanded to also include ISO 800, where the dynamic range boost mode seems to kick in.
Absolutely brilliant review thank you, instant subscription. Question: If you could only have the 9mm f1.7 or the 8-18mm f2.8-4 which would you choose and why? TIA!
It's very wide, so it could work for a landscape during a storm, but the lightning would be small in the frame. I'd go for something narrower personally
Hi Emily was thinking of buying the lens for travel and vlog/photos only bought the gh6 with 12-60mm Leica kit do you think the Leica 9mm lens holds well with the AFC settings on
All good choices! If you shoot longer exposures on tripod, the wider aperture here wouldn’t make too much of a difference. I know the 9-18 is m very sharp to the edges as well! If I was starting interior shots now, without any prior purchases, I’d pick the lumix 9mm I think. But the 9-18 is one of my faves too for sure
You actually do reviews from the perspective of a real photographer instead of from the perspective of a pixel peeper. They are also paced well and are well produced. This lens is very interesting to me. I've not purchased a new lens for a long time. Many recent releases seem kind of redundant. I have the 12-40 and PL 50-200. Are the 12-45 and 40-150 f/4 lenses really going to entice me? No doubt very nice lenses, but not lenses that do things I can't already do. I have a PL15, which I've used a lot, but have thought something a bit narrower would be interesting to try. The relatively new Olympus 20 looks great. But do I really need a 15 and a 20? This one, especially with the close focusing capabilities, is a different tool. I suspect my run of not purchasing a new lens will soon come to an end. And the price makes me not need to go through an eternal internal debate trying to justify the costs. Again, excellent review.
Emily, i have the Olympus Fisheye f/1.8 Pro, so how do you think this Panaleica 9mm f/1.7 compare to that? i use the fisheye on OMD1.2 body, so i can activate the defished option
That 8mm lens is superb on Olympus bodies. I don’t think you’d need the 9mm if you had the 8mm oly. (Weirdly i shot my oly 8mm review in the same cathedral with very similar test images!)

Unfortunately I only have the Samyang 14mm on my full frame camera as the closest comparison, which is a bit too wide for a fair “jello” test.
I think (to my eyes!) the wobble at 4 mins is more a bit of jello, than a loss of focus. I thought the focus was really good throughout my tests 😊
And yes, I’m so glad to be able to talk about this lens now!!
Have you tested the 8-25mm f4 Olympus? In the compact and sharp world are they equivalent? One being polyvalent and the other luminous?
Awesome pix, great job, I'm an MFT shooter as well with GX85 and G85, looks promising..
You could stop ot down slightly to 2.8 or f4 just.to be safe but it's such a great quality lens wide open
thanks for the quick reply, I think that's made up my mind,!@@MicroFourNerds
Nice review, What's it like for astrophotography?
Emily, is there any chance of a comparison review between this and the new Laowa 6mm? I was all set to save for this lens but I'm seeing such good things about the new laowa that I just can't decide. I mean 6mm!!!
I am so intrigued by that lens!
Great reviev - thank you - but one more question:
Is it able to cover a total 90 degree horizontal angle of view ?
Example: The camera is positioned in an 45 half angle in a corner of a room , hall or cross gangway.
Do you see the left and the right wall ?
I call it the 90 degree challenge
yes should give 100 degrees
HOW DID YOU GET A COPY!!!??? I NEED!
Because Emily is a Lumix rock star!
Buy ittttt 🤣
@@MicroFourNerds in order! No stock available at the moment but got it on back order
Wonderful review on this lens! I just picked one up, and notice that I hear the autofocus pretty audibly when I half press on the shutter. Do you notice this on yours? Or should I be concerned that this is a defect on mine?
Really impressing lens and reviewer. THANK YOU EMILY
Brilliant I always check you before a purchase and thank you
Wonderful lens; great video! Have you tried on your G100? Perhaps with a small gimbal?
Hi Emily! Another lovely video of yours 🙌🏻
Let me ask you a quick question, if you have to choose only one, will it be this lens, the Lumix 9mm 1.7 or the Laowa 6mm f2.0?
How many stops of a difference between this lens and Laowa 9mm f2.8?
Great review of this super lens, will it work on my Olympus camera?
It will work on Olympus cameras 😊
Great review as always! would you recommend this over a used lumix leica 12mm 1.4? i mainly take shoot on a sunny day in Australia, mostly surfboards and ocean or beach. Thanks
Oooo I think the 12mm might be a bit more versatile for your shooting if you can get it at a good price!
@@MicroFourNerds Thanks, thats what im thinking too, currently its AU $1000 for a used 12mm and AU $650 for a new 9mm. Thanks for the reply
The best M43s lens ever made. The only reason I keep thinking about M43 although I own the S5ii right now and the 24 mm is amazing, but I still think about this 9mm leica 1.7...
Great review as always, love your images! And this is already a classic lens for mft
@@MicroFourNerds Thank you for your time of replying me! Much appreciated
YT Compression when showing things is the worst and 400% helps a lot!
Absolutely brilliant review thank you, instant subscription. Question: If you could only have the 9mm f1.7 or the 8-18mm f2.8-4 which would you choose and why? TIA!
Oooo that’s a tough one!! I love the versatility of the 8-18, but the form factor of the 9mm…. I think the 9mm but it’s a close call!
Just ordered mine, still finding my way around the camera as the GH6 is my first proper camera, that I did buy because of the video specs.
Hmmm would you recommend using this lens for capturing lightning strikes from thunderstorms?
It's very wide, so it could work for a landscape during a storm, but the lightning would be small in the frame. I'd go for something narrower personally
Hey Emily, what's the filter thread size? Getting ready a filter for when the lens is out! Instant buy like you said. Haha.
55mm 😁
@@MicroFourNerds thanks Emily! You certainly caused much excitement for the lens with the incredible photos you showed!
I just bought a 25mm Limix $145.00. Thanks for reviewing MFT lens systems. Just sub'ed.
Hi Emily was thinking of buying the lens for travel and vlog/photos only bought the gh6 with 12-60mm Leica kit do you think the Leica 9mm lens holds well with the AFC settings on
For sure! I didn’t see any issues at all. Very quick and snappy. During my vloggy bits I just left it in AFC and it tracked me really well
Gorgeous photos, Emily xx
Thank you 🙏 ☺️
I use the samyang 7.5mm for interior panorama's and the 9-18 for wide shots, thoughts
Hi Emily, have you got a chance to try it for astro yet? Would love to hear how it performs
I haven’t unfortunately! I did take the lumix 10-25mm f1.7 for a spin this weekend and got some great shots of the Milky Way!
