1. test the wires using a voltage detector.
2. screw on the mounting plate first. Make sure the 2 screws on the box are only partially screwed in. align the 2 big holes on the mounting to where the screws are, push in the mounting plate and rotate it so that it can’t fall off. Then tighten the screws.
3. You can replace a wired smoke alarm without having to do any wiring work by buying an adapter that allows you to connect the new smoke alarm to the harness for the old smoke alarm.
4. take off the nuts, pull off the wires of the connector for the old smoke alarm, and connect the new wires for the new smoke alarm. connecting the white wires together, connect the black wires together, and the red wires together.
5. Note: If you don’t want the smoke alarms to be interconnected with the other smoke alarms, don’t connect the red wire to the house wires.
6. connect the wires to the alarm, making sure that the tabs on the side fit into the holes.
7. test to make sure the alarm’s working, and then pull off the tab to activate the 9v back up battery.
