There's nothing quite like a good road trip, and my recent adventure to Almonte, Ontario was one of the most epic I've ever had. The town is located about 40 minutes west of Ottawa and has a lot to offer, from a charming downtown area to stunning natural scenery. Here are some of the highlights of my trip:
Puppets Up Parade: After a long six-year break, the highly anticipated Puppets Up! Festival finally made a comeback in Almonte, Ontario this past August 2022. This unique and vibrant festival was initially launched back in 2004 by a group of creative individuals led by the talented Noreen Young. Their goal was to showcase the fascinating world of puppetry and provide entertainment and education to people of all ages. Sadly, due to financial constraints, the festival was forced to take a hiatus in 2016. However, it's fantastic to see that the organizers were able to bring it back to life after all these years.
I was lucky enough to catch the parade. It was a whimsical and colorful affair, with puppets of all shapes and sizes parading down the street to the delight of onlookers. There were cute animals that made me laugh out loud.
Riverwalk: After the parade, I took a stroll along the Mississippi River, which runs through the heart of Almonte. To start the walk, I headed over to the Old Town Hall, which served as the perfect starting point for my adventure. As I meandered along the river, I was captivated by the numerous downtown landmarks that dotted the path. From the remnants of the mills that have now been transformed into commercial space and residential condos to the cascading waterfalls and the stunning Metcalf Geoheritage Park, there was so much to take in and appreciate.
The best part of this riverwalk is that it's a gentle stroll, covering a distance of approximately three kilometers. So, you can take your time and fully immerse yourself in the beauty of the surroundings. If you're ever in Almonte, I would highly recommend checking out this gem of a walkway. Trust me, you won't be disappointed!
Dr. James Naismith Sites: Did you know Dr. James Naismith, the inventor of basketball, was born in nearby Almonte 160 years ago? He grew up on a farm near Almonte, Ontario. Although his childhood home, Naismith House, isn't open to the public, you can still visit downtown Almonte to see a bronze statue of the inventor himself. The statue was crafted by American sculptor Elden Tafft and has become a beloved landmark in town. Don't forget to snap a selfie with Naismith's statue on Mill St. It's a popular spot for visitors!
If you're willing to venture just 10 minutes out of downtown Almonte, you'll find the Naismith Museum. Located in the stunning Mill of Kintail Conservation Area, the museum is a must-visit for any basketball fan. It's an excellent opportunity to learn more about the history of basketball and the life of its creator.
Antique Store: Almonte is known for its antique shops, and I couldn't resist exploring one of them. The store was filled with all sorts of treasures, from vintage postcards to old tools and furniture. I spent hours browsing through the shelves, admiring the unique items and imagining the stories behind them.
Shopping and Dining: The downtown area of Almonte is filled with quaint shops and charming cafes and restaurants. I couldn't resist popping into a few of them, picking up some souvenirs and enjoying a delicious lunch at a local eatery. The town has a real sense of community, and everyone I met was friendly and welcoming.
Overall, my road trip to Almonte, Ontario was an unforgettable experience. From the Puppets Up Parade to the Riverwalk to the antique stores and shops, there was so much to see and do. It was a reminder of the beauty and charm of small-town life, and it left me feeling grateful for the opportunity to explore such a lovely part of the province.
