    Chris Emdin came into my science class. My amazing partner teacher and I were observing and giving feedback to team poster presentations in a merry-go-round style, we were both a bit sick. 6 teams we presenting at a time. We have a huge class, 52 kids, 12 groups! As the kids were presenting I noticed all the student presenters perk up and turn on their BEST. I turned around to see what was going on and there was Dr. Emdin smiling and super ENTHUSIASTIC with his nonverbals about what he was seeing. His positive attitude for student achievement shines so bright! I appreciate all that he offers education.

    The take home lesson for me is that first 4C's are all about fostering engagement and empowering students from divergent backgrounds as a part of the learning process. If you can show them that school is an extension of themselves and their communities then content is bound to follow. Hard to argue with that! Good talk :-)

    There are many ideas that sound appealing, but what is needed is to scientific research to determine if these approaches are effective. Much of what was mentioned could lead to a teacher projecting their views on what should be done. Feedback from students and parents is important.

    I'm studying this as a PhD student in Social Work...Paulo Freire and Pedagogy of the Oppressed. This is obviously build upon his ideology as all modern critical pedagogy is. However, I really like the way this has been brought to the present and seems much less disconnected than Freire's writings from the 60-80's

    I think this is good but how do you do this in the real world when everything is standard base. You have to teach the standards so they can pass the state exams. How can you do this w/o the academic rigor required in classrooms, especially, if you have very little time to teach the standards?

  • @nancycarollo4153
    @nancycarollo4153 8 років тому +5

    Some of this was interesting and relevant. I don't buy the white guilt part, but that is not the biggest problem in educating children from different cultures. I work in an elementary school where standards of learning and content are placed in the number 1 position. Test scores are reported in the papers. This is a huge conflict for teachers who want to engage with students and cooperate, collaborate, and open dialog because we often feel so constricted by the time we have to teach all of the standards before testing begins. Like many things in life, you listen, you learn and decide what to take away and use from the readings, teaching, and speeches of others. I can see using some reality in my teaching.

    • @fatimatoor3061
      @fatimatoor3061 6 років тому +3

      Nancy Carollo you can still use their culture when teaching content ie: shout outs, call and response, giving them the opportunity to teach and speak is all relevant. Bigger picture

    This seems like more of a social engineering delivery of dialogue. Give me some there is an actual events that I can use in my classroom as a teacher and based on situational ethics if you want but give me something because all this seems like is a repertoire of white guilt

    • @quinnterry2834
      @quinnterry2834 5 років тому +11

      This is an example of exactly his point - he's not yelling. This is what is described as "passion" within a people for whom storytelling is a part of his culture. There is a distinct difference between "yelling" at someone (and we all know the difference when you're in trouble) and showing passion for a subject you're communicating. I hope you've had the chance to interact with folks who do show passion in this way. Communication looks different for a variety of racial and ethnic groups.

    This is truly wacko material. So the teacher's job is to follow the lead of the student? Ask the student what he needs? What if this student decides he doesn't need math or reading or science?
    The thinking here is backwards, thoroughly.

    • @NOSfusion
      @NOSfusion 7 років тому +1

      He is simply asking that we move to an Andragogy style of teaching for our youth. I think what we really need is something between Pedagogy and Andragogy; perhaps we call it Tweenagogy.
