    Sweet video! We just purchased 2 girls earlier this year. About to start the breeding process. We have about 5 acres of open field and I am trying to learn as much as I can from great channels. Love your philosophy and methods!

    I like the name “Counter Culture”!
    Just started sheep 2 years ago. Black belly, Dorper and Katahdin. Just getting to know them takes a few years. Can’t be too picky with only 6 ewes. They’re doing ok. If we continue, which we’d like to, we’ll invest a bit more a get picky with breeding. Great video!

      Never too early to be picky with breeding selection. Animals that need help or don't pull their own weight will always be that way. Better to start out early choosing livestock who thrive without help.

    Question for you. I’m about 4 minutes into the video and you may mention this but if not here it is. What is the difference between cutting hay and feeding it to your livestock vs leaving it in the ground and letting the sheep graze it all winter? I’ve asked some farmers this and they say the nutrients go back to the soil and the pasture isn’t as nutrient dense once it goes dormant. This is coming from traditional farmers that swear by hay though. Just was hoping to get some insight from you. I have enough pasture to graze year round but as of now I’ve always cut it back and fed hay in winter. I could cut down costs and save myself a ton of time and energy and money by not cutting and letting them graze it. Thanks 🙏🏻

    How do you water when rotating your sheep and how do you feed the dogs?

    • @counterculturefarms
      @counterculturefarms  Рік тому +1

      Depends on where they are. Creeks, ponds, stock water points, and hauling water using 300 gallon totes. The dogs are typically On a sheep proof dog feeder where the dogs can get access but the sheep can't. Also, by hand if they are close enough.

      Live from me at the ranch or at Nacogdoches farmers market if you want it cut, packed, frozen individual cuts to make at home. Also, ranchers market in tyler tx or you can come to the ranch and buy from me. Shop online at Www.counterculture.farm but out of stock online at the moment.
