  • Custom media settings allow for a wider range of papers to be used with some printers and for optimising the print quality for a particular media on a printer.
    The examples shown are colour and B&W 36" x 24" prints made on the Epson P7500 (P7570 in the US)
    This video follows on from Keith's look at the custom media installer for the P700/900 in:
    • Epson P700 P900 custom...
    A media setting may be too thick for the manufacturer suggested settings, or you might just want to be able to select a particular paper in the printer driver or printer paper settings.
    The free Epson Media Installer software lets you customise printer options and can be used by paper suppliers to distribute paper profiles and settings.
    The paper is Fotospeed Platinum Gloss Art Fibre 300

    I had to do something similar with Hahnemuhle Rag Baryta. Same problem of stains in the sheet, and now thankfully works fine.

    Solución to head prints marks problem is: Vacum at Max power+adjust manually print head paper separation from settings panel on printer; and for extreme hard curved paper, put over de exit plate paper a little brand new paint wool roller attached to a tripod. This soft paint roller push paper on the plate printer and mantain paper flat at the begining border paper. This is a Mc Gyver way but works perfect and doesnt marks paper at all

      I'm looking at a big print video, but it will be at a fairly general level. I have several videos and articles already covering different aspects (especially B&W) - I'm specifically avoiding 'recipe' type descriptions - I prefer to cover the 'why' far more than the 'how'

    Truly in-depth and phenomenal advice. My question is this: I'm looking to buy a printer for digital art creations of mine (usually 11x17 or 12x18) and I was wondering if the Epson P900 would be the ideal printer for me, especially since I need to print one art work at a time, as I usually limit my works at 100 pieces per project and print them as orders come in. These works are mostly a combination of vector-based elements and manipulated photos, and I need to print them on extremely high quality paper since I'm selling each one. Thank you for your input and advice!

      The P900 is pretty good with sheet feeding (I've a detailed review and quite a lot of videos about it).
      Just take care in paper choice to avoid marks and make sure you use the best icc profiles for optimal results.

    Another enjoyable and very informative video. I’m relatively new at printing my photos and have bought a few Marrutt papers. Marrutt have supplied a custom icc for each paper matched to my printer and ink. Will this apply settings for the paper thickness or does that, as I’m sure I picked up in the vid, come from a media setting?

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  Рік тому +1

      Glad it was of interest. To use the profile you need the media setting that goes with it.
      If you've just got the profile, you need to set media type as well
      It's possible to make custom media, which include the name of the profile, so that picking the media automatically selects the right profile.

    Thanks Keith. I'm always really curious about the vaccum systems in printers. I have the P900 and suffer a lot from smudges and print head scraping the image. Also, since my images often have large areas of the pure black, the pizza wheel marks prevent me from making the perfect images I would like to make. I wasn't even aware of them in my prints until I made prints for a gallery show. The direct spotlights they use show the marks, while diffuse room light does not. Do the vacuum systems really work? I tend to use thick or stiff papers. I'd like to consider buying whatever replaces the P5000, but the deciding factor would be good vaccum and no pizza wheel marks.

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks - I just printed a 36" x 24" borderless print on the P7500 and increased the vacuum for this thick paper. You could hear that the printer was noisier. I'm testing Laowa's new 90mm 2x macro lens so have a photo with huge amounts of black - not a mark or a scratch. I'll be using this image for a video about making large prints and why some images just need to be printed large to work ;-)
      My feeling is that any P5000 replacement is still quite some time off - the other printer with vacuum feed is the Canon PRO-1000. Now that is definitely due an update some time...

    • @davidromano2421
      @davidromano2421 2 роки тому

      @@KeithCooperGood to hear that. So these printers with vacuum systems don't have pizza wheels in them? It's never been clear to me.

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  2 роки тому

      No pizza wheel problems in the P7500 - I need to check the actual settings of the P5000
      The P900 problems seem very much paper and individual printer related.
      The pizza wheels are how the smaller printers manage borderless and printing to the trailing edge - the 900 has a setting for front feed which I believe lowers the effect - you'll need to check all my P900 stuff to see though - there is an index on the main [written] review

      David, I have the P5000 and have observed a couple of things that may give some encouragement. I have so far only used the default vacuum setting which was barely strong enough to contain a fairly tough case: the tail end of a 2" core of Epson luster. Not a thick paper but that small radius curl is not to be taken lightly. I believe that I can bump up the vacuum level if necessary. And the groundbreaking news is that in Roll Paper mode it NEVER engages the pizza wheels at all. It's a cut sheet thing thing only. There have been pizza wheel marks on maybe 1% of my cut sheet prints and unfortunately I don't know how to predict if it will or won't occur.
      The wheels engage only at time of print ejection of cut sheets at the end of a job. Look into the printer "mouth" with a flashlight during a job and you'll soon learn which clicky-clacky noises associate to those wheels. It seems to me that they could have left the wheels out entirely, and used a 2nd location of vacuum ports further along the exit path, and that would have accomplished whatever they expect the wheels to contribute. But I'm not a printer engineer.

    Hi Keith, I have the epson scp700 which I use for printing digital illustrations that I make on my iPad. I use 300gsm linen textured white card (matte) for this, and I find that when I'm printing things that have darker colours on it shows no depth and I lose a lot of the detail. I print through epson photo+ and usually select the media type "epson ultra smooth fine art paper" which works well for the most part, other than with these darker drawings. what would you suggest please?

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  4 місяці тому

      Is the card specific for ink-jet printing?
      Photo+ is very basic - try Epson Print Layout and a paper profile.
      See: www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-sc-p700-printer-review/
      BUT... Do note though, that ipads and phones are pretty poor for printing of any quality or accuracy, since colour management is effectively broken.

    Keith, I really enjoy watching your videos; I just wish I didn't react like Nipper, the RCA dog staring at the gramophone horn. As a recent retiree who bought a good camera and an Epson XP15000, I am very new at this whole printing thing. I have seen 2-3 videos where you talked about it. In addition to spending more time on your website, do you have any suggested reading for complete neophyte, printer operator wannabes? To some extent, the more theory and background, the better. So far my experience with the XP15000 has been downright awful. Thank you for all you do.

      Not a lot I can particularly suggest - for colour management, my favourite is 'Real World Color Management' [Fraser et al.]
      For printing, I'm a strong believer in keeping it simple to start with, and really taking time to actually look at prints...

    Am I correct in thinking that the Epson media installer groups both the profile and paper together thus allowing the printer to manage the printing option via photoshop

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  Рік тому

      That function is only useful when using the 'auto' function for Epson Print Layout to assign the printer profile for the media selected
      It performs no useful function if printing directly from Photoshop - well not quite, on my Mac it moved the profile name from the main list, to the printer's list, making me wonder what had happened to it...
      If using a .emy file from a paper provider, it can install a profile IIRC - but this makes no difference to photoshop.
      I think this is what you were thinking of?
      It's covered in the main [written] P7500 review

      @@KeithCooper Thanks Keith for the response. The reason I ask is because while printing via photoshop I normally let PS manage colour and chose the appropriate profile. With the P7500 if I chose this option the print settings our not available. If I chose let printer manage colour the printer settings are available. Is this correct?

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  Рік тому

      Not sure - the P7500 I tried (Mac only) worked exactly the same as every other printer.
      PS manages colour, set the profile in the PS print dialogue, then set the media in the printer driver settings.
      The custom media just appeared in the list of media available in the printer driver settings.
