Replacing a Chevy Trailblazer Water Pump | 4.2L Inline 6 Cyl Water Pump Replacement
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 жов 2024
- My water pump on my 2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer is going out. I decided in order to save a bunch of money, I'd replace it myself. I went to the parts store, got the parts and supplies I'd need and went to work. Its not a hard job if you have everything ahead of time and plan for a few hours to get it done. This process is virtually the same for the Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, Oldsmobile Bravada, and Isuzu Ascender.

Thank you for the video. I have been fixing cars for 40 years and still watch videos to see if people have tips that I do not know. I subscribed and liked the video.
Very nice tutorial and step-by-step. Thank you.
Thank you for not wasting time on stuff we don't need to see you do. Thanks for bringing personality to your video. Very helpful.
Thank You! I tried to keep it as short as possible.
Best video on youtube for this. I was able to do this for the first time in about an hour and 15 minutes in a gas station parking lot. Granted my coolant was already drained by the water pump failing and stranding me in said parking lot but that doesn't take away from how good this process is for changing the water pump!
Thats awesome! I'm so glad you got back on the road. Well done.
Thank You! You're a Blessing! My neighborhood repair shop QUOTED me $1,500.00 for the job!!
After watching your video, I know I can do it myself. Again, thank You!!
You can do it. Have fun!
$1500 is absolutely robbing people. This is a 90 minute job. At the most $150. in labor.
@@mike856ms $260 is what it pays
I did this job 11 years ago and wanted a refresher about doing it again since it needs replacing. Thanks for the upload.
Dude thank you so much for this video. I am no mechanic and I was able to fairly easily replace the pump in my trailblazer!
Awesome! I knew you could do it.
Thank you so much for creating this video! You turned a potential emergency (potentially costing thousands) into an evening job I could handle myself. Very much appreciated!
Oh man! I'm so glad you got your fixed. It's crazy how expensive it is at a shop, then when you get it done all you think it "that wasnt so bad!" Right on. 👍
10/10, super easy to follow along, was able to complete the replacement in an afternoon. Runs like a dream now.
Only thing I did differently was I drained the radiator prior to removing the water pump so the coolant wouldn't spill everywhere
I just finished, fan clutch bolts 13 mm, shroud bolts 10 mm, waterpump bolts 10 mm, fan pulley bolts 13 mm. Took an hour non stop working at it with part on hand and 2 gallons of antifreeze about.
Torque specs for those who care are 35 in/lb first then 89in/lbs. NOT FOOT LBS.
According to the GM Trailblazer Chilton Repair Manual:
* Apply a thin layer of RTV sealant to both sides of the new water pump gasket
* Torque specs - Fan Blade Bolts 20 ft. lbs - Water pump mounting bolts 6 cylinder 89 inch lbs - Water pump pulley bolts 18 ft. lbs.
_you're welcome_
Thanks!
Felt gaskets require no rtv sealant
Enjoy all your videos. You’re a jack of all trades.
Thank You!
Excellent how-to, thanks. At 73 I don't work on my cars like I once did but this one doesn't look all that tough.
You can do it!
I feel like when people say they're too old to do things is when old age really sets in.
Thanks man! Helped me out tons.
Glad it helped!
I'm starting my water pump on my 06 trailblazer today. I will use you tips for sure. Thx
Awesome. You can do it.
Thanks for taking the time to make content like this! you truly are a hero, especially to me right now as i deal with this in a 04. LOL
I performed this on my 2004 Envoy. Use caution, the water pump bolts are torqued to 89 inch pounds. After more research, the bolts are reportedly to be tty, torque to yield, bolts. This means when bolts are torqued, they stretch. This is common on where items bolt into aluminum castings as this timing cover. The O.E. water pump gasket is a crushed metal gasket. The O.E. pump comes with a new metal crush gasket as well.
That would mean new bolts should be used because they only stretch once.
Thanks for the vid bro! I was able to fix in an hour! 👍
Thanks. Cool video . I like way you explain it.
This is gonna be me come Friday.
Awesome. You can do this. It's not too bad. 👍
Doing mines now
Really liked your video thank you I think I will perform this task myself again thanks love your attitude as well☺
Ah, the good ol' days when I did stuff like that myself - once in 17 degree Farenheit. Now, I call my son the mechanic and have him do it or take it to the shop if my son can't get to it before I need it. lol I'm getting too old to crawl under or over vehicles these days...
I've also changed my share of transmissions while laying in the driveway in the snow. Lol. Its not my favorite thing, but if I can save many hundred dollars, I'll take a crack at it.
Just used this method to replace the waterpump on my '02 trailblazer, and while it was a bit tough to overall, it did work out well. thanks man!
I'm having a hard time loosening the water pump pulley, the first part in the video. It will not give
Thanks for the vid! 02 Envoy needs it bad
Excellent video!
For me, the screwdriver trick didnt work. I used a crowbar to leverage against rhe bolts when loosening the fan. I also removed the lower radiator hose which allowed for less fluid to come out of the water pump upon its removal.
Tackling this tomorrow on a 2007 Saab 9-7x. Thanks for the insight!
Good video! A few tips…Take the lower rad hose off first to drain the system and use a torque wrench to install the water pump. Torque wp at 4Nm first, then 10Nm on a second criss cross pattern. Torque pulley bolts to 25Nm and clutch bolts to 25Nm. Since you have the system drained flush the rad out good with the hose and put some fresh pre-mix dexcool in there for maximum cooling and wp life.
😅😅😅o
I have replaced the Fan clutch and the thermostat assembly in the past on my 2005 Chevy trail blazer. Just wanted to see how much trouble it would be for the water pump. EXCELLENT VIDEO. BTW, I would remove the bottom hose first to drain the engine block.
That would work great!
Thank you so much! I’m going to try to do this. I appreciate your help
Awesome. You can do it!
I realize I'm kinda randomly asking but does anybody know of a good website to watch newly released movies online?
@Leandro Tristian Flixportal :D
@Yusuf Noah Thank you, I signed up and it seems like a nice service =) I really appreciate it !!
@Leandro Tristian No problem :)
Nice video. I've changed ours twice, an '08 Envoy. Fun fact for you, the '08 doesn't have an electric fan clutch, no wiring to mine. I use the same method to remove the fan, a big wrench.
That's interesting its not an electric clutch. Hopefully its much cheaper that way. Mine was pricey.
@@homebuiltshop I haven't had to change it yet, but that would be my hope too.
I hope you dont have to.
How the heck did you wedge a screwdriver in there to hold the water pump bolts?
Did you figure it out? Having the same issue lol
Seems impossible...I am stuck in this one too.
Nowhere in this video is there a screwdriver lmaooooo
You basically use the screw driver to wedge on the top of the nuts between each nut head on the pulley
@@homer3234911 Alternately, remove one bolt on the pulley, pass through link of chain(we all have small chain laying around, right?), wrap other end of chain around engine hoist anchor. This will hold pulley in place.
Great video. It was really helpful. Thank you.
Good job - lots of details - decent camera angles - you obviously put some time into this. One thing I would suggest is cut a piece of carboard - about 18.5 X 11 inches - and insert it against the inside of the radiator - it will protect it as you are trying to remove the clutch fan (and also when you are re-assembling. Just make sure you remove it afterwards. Most folks could do with just a few tools - the large fan nut I did not have a wrench for - but a large adjustable did the trick. Also my 2008 does not have an electrical connection to the fan. I deviated a bit - I cut out a section as others have done to so that the radiator inlet port cleared the shroud with a bit less fuss.
You made that look easy. Great video.
I'm just slightly confused at what you're prying against around the 2:15 mark that's getting you leverage with the wrench.
Thank u. Awesome I'm ready!
You got this! Good luck.
Very nice tips bro!
Just had mine replaced, the Chevy dealership quote was 1058.00 that's was for new belt and idler pulley also. My local mechanic shop did it all for 488.00, which I gladly let them do. I'm not mechanically inclined, great video though. Labor was 300.
Thanks for sharing. The dealership is almost always the most expensive.
Great video man👍🏻, TB are good vehicles
Thanks. I have had very few problems with my TB. I like them.
@@homebuiltshop I have one to, I spent a lot money for repairs
@@homebuiltshopmy trailblazer water pump at 190,000 miles, is it best to replace it? ,thnaks
5 Stars !!!!! Thank you !!!!
Great job. Dry beneficial
How did you wedge the screw driver to the pump pulley?
Great help
Thank you I need to do this tomorrow
Did it work?
@@homebuiltshop yes got the job done ty
Thanks
First changed the radiator then let it run for a while turned heat on gave it gas
It started overheating then leaking antifreeze from the water pump
So I’m pretty sure the water pump damaged the radiator
It was making noise I ignored it so here I am replacing everything hahaha
Very good video thank you
Thank you too!
Thanks man. I WAS dreading it. Looks ok.
Good stuff! Thanks!!!
Thank you!
Awesome vid man! Thank you so much!!
Thanks, I'm happy it was helpful.
I have no idea how he managed to get the fan shroud clear of the top radiator hose nipple. It hardly takes any time at all to unfasten the core support and that gives enough room to rock the radiator back slightly. SO much easier.
Thank you
I know this is old, but if anyone is interested the torque spec on the waterpump bolts is pretty low, only 10 Nm, or 89 In Lbs.
I've found that the cheap, 1/4 inch drive, pneumatic, air ratchets from Harbor Freight, Northern Tool, etc... seem to land around this torque at max tight. I think more or less air pressure can change the max tight and I'm sure the ratchets vary to some degree; so it's a good idea to check your setup before letting it rip. Don't over / under torque your stuff because of some clown (me) on YT.
That being said, every one of those ratchets I've had (I've had 4 or 5 over the last decade) torque to 7-8 Ft Lbs at max tight; which is pretty close to the 10 Nm / 89 In Lbs. Your results may vary.
Great video too, thanks
My only question is why unfiltered the fan from its clutch and take it out as two pieces instead of leaving it together, taking it out as one piece and then unbolting it?
I broke a bolt off in the water pump housing and can't extract it. Is it okay or is there a way around it? I'm looking at 700 to extract it 😭
great job thanks
Thank you too!
When the Crescent wrench won't break the fan clutch loose, what's your next move?
I would advise while you are in there and everything is out of the way, go ahead and pull the alternator so you can replace the thermostat behind it, way easier with the fan out of the way and at the age and likely mileage at this point on any of these wouldn't hurt to do motor mounts while all that stuff is out of the way. thats my plan
Thanks!
Thank You so much! I'm glad I was able to help you out.
This my first water pump so its taking me more that 4 hours
Thats OK, as long as you are able to get it done.
How is this a 3hr job? My mechanic did it in 40 minutes water pump only
Thats a great question. I am not a professional mechanic and do not have a professional shop to work out of. While I can do much of the same work as a pro, trying to do certain repairs in the driveway does take a bit longer. I am not trying to compare this job to a professional, just trying to help out those that want to do it themselves and same a lot of money.
@@homebuiltshop He was a 24yr old home garage mechanic that I found on Facebook marketplace Took the shoud out in 15 minutes no cutting. Never did my type of car before. Organized neat no hesitation. Labor $100 Amazing!
This is a very good video..thanks dude
Right on! I'm glad it was helpful.
Thank you!!!!!! 💜
You are so welcome!
Do you want to come over, and replace the radiator in my car. Lol I'm not looking forward to this job.
I always tell my wife. With my tools an you tube, I can fix anything. Lol
Blessings to you and your family
I'd lend a hand if I was nearby. You got this though.
What all size 🛠️ need for this repair I gotta do same of friend trailblazer 😊
Do I just screw the fan clutch on until it's snug or do it have to be really tight? When I took it out it did fall back on the radiator. Hopefully it's alright. I need to see how the fan clutch positions in the shroud. Does it just hold in place when I screw it back to the fan?
tu e bom mesmo cara valeu
Hey dude
I have 05 Chevy Trailblazer Lt I need to do some work on. SUV front end. Do you have any front video Trailblazer please let me know so I can see the video b4 I do the job or take a mechanic shop. I live in Houston, TX
I do like your videos on here & keep up good work, ok
Your friend Michael from Houston TX
What all these water pump/ fan clutch removal videos fail to show is what exactly is happening when loosening the nut on the fan. Everyone says "wedge" a screwdriver against the pulley bolts except doing so locks the fan nut and prevents it from turning which is why a fan clutch wrench is needed.
Mine just started to wiggle like that 🤣
hey I got a question can I reuse the antifreeze that comes out of the engine, I just got my antifreeze flushed like 2 months ago
You didn't show how you got the fan clutch loose after pulling the fan off
Water pump on mine was nothing to do now the Thermostat was a major pain in the ...
The thermostat on mine wasn't too bad. I did it a couple years ago.
As a female DIY'er, I clean when I can...two minutes to clean the shroud or spray degrease that area. It like cooking..clean as you go.
Nothing wrong with spring clamps they actually keep constant pressure on the hose the clamp you used will not and will leak
In another video I saw a guy saying that noise was the alternator. How can I test them to know which part is on mine? The noise is at oil cap cover
What did you do, roll around in the mud?
I had to climb underneath to make sure the shroud was seated properly. My jacket is filthy. 👍
When replacing the water pump, is there a timing chain entwined in the water pump?
No, there was no timing chain to worry about. The pump is belt driven.
What exact size bolts does this water pump use?
I chance those out alot
It wasn't too bad. Do you remove the core support?
You dont have to remove the fan from the clutch when removing from the vehicle
Why didn’t he show us how he disconnected the clutch fan from the water pump. That’s the main reason I was watching it! Can somebody show that part?!
I started that at about 2:08 to loosen the nut and finish removing it at 5:20. There's not a super detailed shot of this because there's just not enough room to get my camera in there.
I'm a little late here but does anyone know if this pump has a weep hole to let you know if there is a leak in the pump, like on the old vehicle water pumps?
My shroud was already cut but I would have cut it myself.
Should you use a fan clutch tool.. I'm looking for a trick to avoid that
I just used a screwdriver to hold the clutch in place and a large adjustable wrench to break the clutch loose. You don't necessarily need to clutch tool. It does make it easier though.
I've got s stubborn one on my trailblazer. Waiting for the tool I bought online to show up.
Do u have to replace the fan clutch if u replace the water pump ?
If the clutch is still good, you shouldn't need to replace it. Make sure it doesnt have any lateral play in it.
I heard youre supposed to change your water pump when you change the fan clutch? Is this accurate?
no
How much coolant did it take to top it off ?
How much antifreeze did you use?
10mm? well, that leaves me out....
Seen this mama on tiktok baiting guys with 10mm sockets and ammo
I don't have it in line 6. It's a v 6
No one gonna say anything about that serpentine belt
How did you get the fan clutch off. You failed to show that. Makes your video no good
It's worth saying WHY you don't spill antifreeze all over. Pets love it. If they drink it they die. PS: News to me--I didn't know any US vehicles still use inline 6 cyl. engines!
I think GM brought it back with this vehicle. I liked the old ones. They just kept on running.
I have a 08 with the I6 and its a freaking workhorse!
It is not an inch and 7/16 wrench you're full of it I try to 36 and it's way too 36 mm and it's way too sloppy it's got to be a 35 mm
And you guys have this stuff torn apart before you even think about fucking posting the shit and then you put it back together that's why the boat so damn loose
I made this repair while the camera was running. It wasn't done ahead of time. I'm sorry if I got the size wrong, I didn't have a wrench large enough so thats why I used an adjustable wrench. It took hitting it with a hammer to loosen it.
@@homebuiltshop you got the right size wrong not me and you think about it it's a 24 mm wrench so you need to check your equations
Good job
LOL
I knew you'd get a kick out of that.
Actually you did fairly well my friend.
Thanks man. I got the job done.
painful to watch... you`re workin way too hard...
And getting really dirty. lol
It's not a inline six
