Your video was the basis of kiting out my car for a 10 day trip around the South of the South Island. One mod was getting a 12v car kettle from Repco/Super Cheap Auto. 20 mins later I had a cuppa and didnt bother with the gas butane burner. That UV insect zapper was a god send on the west coast with those sand flies. Many thanks. Zig
I never thought about using a tripod to hold the jetboil cooking set up. I just ordered an Outback Wilderness and can’t wait to hit the mountain ranges in USA for similar short term camping trips.

Great set up Richard. I remember when I went camping in 2015 around Utah and Arizona for two month in my AWD Audi. I used a small tent most of the time, but I slept in the car when I couldn't set up the tent early and it was raining, also stopping in a motel once a week or every 10 days... That trip was when I got into nightscape photography after chasing storms trying to photograph lightning...

I know I keep saying but I can't help it, that new video camera is so impressive for low light. Just Brilliant Richard. Thanks so much for doing this video. Given I have exactly the same car, you have given me a few great ideas. I have been agonising for over a year about how to extend the rear seat back length (when folded down) for the bed. I tried supports from below and modified headrest inserts but your idea with the backboard and strap is just gold. I'll definitely be doing that! You also pointed out a few hidey holes I hadn't thought of using. But most of all, 10 out of 10 for the toilet seat and storage location. I think I'll paint mine gold so it really is a throne! If you don't mind I might email you direct to find out some of the local suppliers for things like the bull bar and lights. I nearly hit another roo last night coming back from the Cascades at 2am. Great video Richard and Subby looks like it gets the job done for you in short term trips. A beautiful set up mate on an importantly reliable vehicle. Have you ever thought of a getting a roof top camper that flips out? Would give you more room in the vehicle for gear/food etc. Im looking at getting one for my Tucson so I can be off the ground in the outback and it only takes minutes to set up and close if I have to move quickly. a great video as usual - I love your work. the one thing I worry about with your setup is how some of that gear could turn into projectiles in the case of an accident. One of our friends is a hospital doctor and he exhorts everyone to have cargo barriers as he's seen some awful cases of even the most mundane articles becoming a projectile and creating terrible damage to the driver and passengers when an accident occurs.
Fantastic video! Love the 'throne', hahaha! If I may suggest...purchase a bunch of double-walled stainless steel water bottles (S'well or similar knock-offs). Those water bottles are really meant for single use and degrade quickly when used over and over, especially when kept in the car (hot/cold exposure), leaching nasty chemicals into the water you are drinking. Just a thought! @Subaru should hire you to make a commercial! Have a great day!
Great Video certainly some good ideas I will use too Thanks. I have similar setup with my Outback although I do use a fridge and dual battery system with the second battery 100ah lithium battery sitting within the spare wheel. Works really well as its constantly recharged through the driving. Since its a large battery I also have a 12v electric blanket that keeps me toasty on those really cold nights (Or just when I want to get into a warm bed).
@Nightscape Images spare wheel is where it is normally stored. The battery sits in the middle of wheel. If on the rare occasion I need to use the spare I just need to unscrew two wires connecting to the battery and the battery comes out and the wheel comes out after that. So it's not a big issue to change the tire. Saves having to stuff around with multiple batteries all the time. There is also an outlet setup on the towbar for plugging in solar power if that's needed. I just use foldable solar panels which store under with the spare wheel too. Rarely used though only if I'm staying in one location and not driving anywhere.
Great to see this run down, organisation is so key. I've had to improvise so many nights because I've forgotten gear or haven't charged batteries. Subaru seems a perfect match, also very fitting given Subaru is the Japanese name for the Pleiades star cluster after which the company was named.
When you started I thought it was going to be an ad for Subaru. But what a great video and insight into how you prepare and travel around. You’ve obviously done quite a bit of this to have it so well organised. I guess the issue for some is feeling safe sleeping in the car out in the middle of no where. Love the little cooker idea and the portable chargers, I could have used one of those last night while I was out shooting, the Aurora that didn’t show up, still there was some nice clear sky to shoot.😀

You’ve got a very similar set up to what I have Richard. I’ve got a Toyota Rav 4 All Wheel Drive set out like that with a double sized mattress in the back. I also have a lot of the sort of gear you take with you as well. If I’m going away for a couple of weeks on a photography road trip I’ll hook up my camper trailer and take that. Great video. As a future Outback owner and astrophotographer, I've been looking at ideas for road trips to dark sites for some deep sky photography. I really like the mod on the Jetboil to mount on a tripod. I've never seen that before. Thanks!
Love the tripod idea for the Jet Boil. I use a Dodge Grand Caravan as my vehicle (Canada) and love it. The seats fold into the floor giving me huge amounts of space. Also, a thing worth considering, depending on where you travel, is a satellite tracker in case of an emergency and you're out of cellphone range.

Very informative. I can see you and I are very much alike. I made a cross country trip alone from Minnesota, USA to produce nightscapes in Badlands, Arches & Canyonlands National Parks, USA and slept in my Mazda CX-30 every night. My portable toilet is a 5 gallon plastic pail with a toilet seat that snaps on. A disposable bag fits the pail so disposing the waste products is clean and easy. I packed food, water, camping equipment, and of course, photography equipment. It was a rewarding experience until the smoke from wildfires made astrophotography impossible. The Mazda CX-30 is a relatively high clearance AWD vehicle. It is smaller than a Subaru Outback, but is large enough for my 5' 5" height and hold all my equipment comfortably. John... FotyFotos

Just great. Seeing all this organisational perfection I wondered about how do you cope with being away from your family for the (extended) times of your trip? Or, say, not only family but regular human conversation and interaction at all? Wouldn't it be great to share all the experiences with a likeminded buddy that's with you once in a while? Thanks as always for watching .. and no, not inappropriate at all. On my last trip through Tasmania my wife flew over to Hobart and I picked her up there after I'd finished the photography part of my journey. From then on we only stayed in proper accommodation but it was really nice to have that extra time with her as a "Holiday". I find that shooting nightscapes the way I do is a lot easier by myself on these trips. I tend to make decisions at the last minute to change location or perhaps find a different place to camp for the night. As much as I do pre-prepare .. it's not until you get on location that you work out exactly what's going to happen. The other aspect is that my creative energy is most activated when I'm in exploration mode . .with time to spare. So I can do what I want when I want .. this enables me to push myself a bit harder if necessary to get the shot while at a particular location. That's a lot easier for me to do by myself. Also, I don't mind my own company.

Excellent way to wrap all up and also share the passion with your close ones. Regarding the flexiblity on your trips I fully understand your motivation. My wife and I run a 4wd camper for some (limited... welcome to regulared Europe) outdoor adventures. Being on my own and being with my wifey are two completely different ways of exploring and getting out. I'm even more riskier, or shall I say adventurous, when being on my own, since it feels like only half the responsibility and half the things to having to consider. Great video. I actually did that in September, as I went to a friend’s farm and spent the whole night out, under the stars ✨! I organized the back of my Toyota RAV4 with everything I needed. As for next summer, I’ll have our Chevrolet Uplander modified in a way that I can go out for photography trips that last a few days. Isn’t that so wonderful? Nothing in the van 🚐 will be permanent so I can remove all and use the car with it seats. I’m looking forward to that. This is so much fun and great adventures without the high cost that could go along with it, sometimes! You take care!

Thanks again for looking David. I think the only advantage a Camper Van has over my Subaru is sleeping and eating space inside. They don't get into the places I can take my Subi. Also they are bigger, heavier and as you say . .more expensive.
Nice setup. You usually learn a number of tricks and tips over a period of time whilst travelling. I too prefer a number of smaller chargers and battery packs, like you said much easier to store and much lighter to move around when required rather than a larger pack.
On my 2-3 day astro pano road trips I use x2 3Ltr Camelbak bladders as my primary drinking water. I place them behind my driver seat with drinking piece next to my left arm, I find them extremely handy to sip and drive without taking eye off the road. Yeah I use used 2Lt Juice container if I need more. I also use 1.5Lt pressure/pump water sprayer, this is very handy for general efficient cleaning. My road trip vehicle around WA is a 1990 Nissan 300ZXTT 2+2, not ideal but its done the job for now with a bit of planning. Sleeping arrangement is very cosy in the front passenger seat. Seat goes back about 160 degree which is good enough. But 3 night of staying up all night and scouting during the day is about all I can handle, before going home or getting accommodation for a longer trip.

Always interesting to consider the practicalities of your nightscape road trips Richard, which you clearly have down to a tee 👍. Here in the UK, parking up overnight and sleeping in your vehicle is sometimes discouraged and, where permitted, can often attract a charge. Are you able to park up for the night pretty much where you like in Australia?

Obviously with my setup it doesn't look like anyone's actually camping so most don't even take any notice. Sometimes i'll stop at a recognized camping ground but usually I prefer to be on location. I notice Thomas Heaton is often just pulling up his van anywhere to sleep.
In Queensland it is generally illegal to sleep in a car overnight. There are a few designated spots where it is allowed. I believe that in at least most other Australian states it is legal to sleep in a car overnight. The good thing about an Outback or similar is that it could be very incognito.

Awesome video mate. Just a question, have you thought about running a dual battery system for charging your equipment, your alternator can charge both your car and 2nd batteries while you drive, then you can use your 2nd battery without touching the one under the bonnet. You can then have charging points all over the car, also you can use the 2nd battery to jump-start your car if needed.

@@nightscapeimages.richard you can do it to any car, I have put a system in my wife's ford escape the only difference is that the 2nd battery is in our camper trailer and it works a treat, you wouldn't need to have a huge battery to do what you need it to. An 80 amp hour deep cycle would be fine.

Thanks heaps for taking a look John. No pressure at all. I was always going to make this video .. in fact I intended to do it when in Tasmania, but I just had so much going on down there. You can get in either by the RH rear door or through the liftgate at the back. Depends how you're feeling at the time. It's actually pretty easy to get in and out .. bonus is that I can see if the sky is clearing while lying flat out in the back seat .. Also the sunroof comes in handy for that as well.

I assume you have an app like litchi that allows the drone to follow the controller ? I also liked your JetBoil. Yes I didn't see many Subarus when I visited the UK a few years ago . .they are very popular here, Japan and the US. I use the automated tracking features in the DJI app. DJI Air2S

My concern, where I live, is to leave my car unattended for long periods of time, even during the day, with all the gear exposed to unwanted attention. How do you deal with it, if it is even a problem over there?

Often I'm not leaving the car anywhere with lots of people hanging around, and to be honest no=one would know what I'm doing or if I have anything of interest inside the car. But having said that . .it's not something that's a great issue over here.
Love your videos Richard. How is the fuel consumption of the Subaru? We drive a troopy that drinks quite a lot of fuel, but sleep in there for weeks or sometimes months at a time.
Thanks so much for watching Juergen. The fuel consumption is excellent. It's only a 2.5ltr petrol engine. Obviously only really suitable for solo camping though.
Hi Richard, great video as always. I opted for a 4WD with roof top tent, fridge, inbuilt kitchen etc. But that's because I also do a lot of outback touring off-grid for a couple of weeks at a time. Not a cheap setup! I have a question about your Laowa 15mm f/2 that you had on a previous video, and how it compares in light transmission to the Nikon Z 14-24 f/2.8 that you temporarily had. I have the Laowa, and it seems to have lower light transmission than my Z 20mm f/1.8. A normal setting on a dark night for my 20mm would be 25s, f/1.8, ISO2000. The equivalent for my Laowa would be 30s, f/2, ISO2000 (1/3 stop longer shutter, but 1/3 stop smaller aperture). However, I find that with the Laowa I really need to bump the ISO to 3200 or 4000, which is 2/3 to 1 stop more. This leads me to believe that the Laowa uses lower quality glass that has less light transmission. In addition, there is significantly more vignetting (which isn't necessarily bad depending on your style). Did you find something similar between your Laowa and the Z 14-24mm that you had? Unfortunately I can't find t-stops (light transmission) for these lenses, as opposed to f-stops (which is actually a measure of depth of field, and only somewhat correlates to light transmission) I'd love Nikon to bring out a Z 15mm f/1.8, but I don't think it's going to happen anytime soon, so I'm trying to determine if it's worth selling my Laowa and buying the 14-24 f/2.8. It's worth it for me if it has the same light transmission (the 14-24 1 stop slower but better glass giving an equivalent exposure) because it's versatile for daytime landscapes. I know you might say just stack a bunch of photos, but I'm most interested in timelapses. Sorry for the long message, but keen to hear what you think.
Hey Ben, thanks so much for watching. Sounds like you've got a great setup with your vehicle. Regarding the Laowa .. to be honest, it's not a patch on the Nikon 20mm fq1.8 or the Nikon 14-24 fs.8. But of course it's nowhere near as expensive. I'd say the vignetting contributes to the lesser light transmission s well. I can't get a sharp image across the frame with the Laowa so I'd say my copy is de-centred. Nothing unusual for these cheap lenses. It's unfortunate really because the form factor is very good and the rugged build quality and small size are all great. I pretty much only use it for timelapses as I can crop some of the aberrations out with the 16x9 aspect ratio . .and for that it's ok. If I had a lot of spare cash the 14-24 f2.8S lens is much better but I find it hard to justify when I rarely shoot at those wider focal lengths. I did try out the 14-24 and it was pretty good . .very sharp but I still preferred the 20mm lens. Like you I'd love a Nikon 15mm f1.8 or even an f2.8 lens .. native Z mount.
@@nightscapeimages.richard I have the same decentred problem with my Laowa. At least, I suspect that's the case because I just can't get all the stars as pinpoints across the frame. When you say that the Z 14-24 2.8 is 'much better', do you not only mean in sharpness but also in light transmission? So basically with the same settings, the image from the 14-24 would appear brighter? Or is it only because of the less vignetting? (if the 14-24 actually has less?)
@@bencollins7684 I can't say with any surety that the Nikon lens transmits more light but that's my suspicion. I didn't have both the lenses at the same time and therefore no side by side comparison.
Great video Richard. I like your simple set up. I’m 6”4 and have slept comfortably in my 2019 outback. Unfortunately the base board I’m using is one length so its easier for me to have it on the passenger side which means that the base and inflatable mattress needs to be narrow (for now).

Excellent vid! Just what I was looking for. Some fantastic practical solutions, e.g., Masonite strapped to front seat for head support, dealing with muddy boots, no fridge, no table, no built-ins, and use of door buckets for water storage, just to name a few. Genius! Thank you.

Your video was the basis of kiting out my car for a 10 day trip around the South of the South Island. One mod was getting a 12v car kettle from Repco/Super Cheap Auto. 20 mins later I had a cuppa and didnt bother with the gas butane burner. Thanks a lot for watching Andrew. Yes it won't compete with your Ford Ranger for off road ability but it's a great compromise for the trips I do .... and it's surprisingly comfortable. The other thing I forgot to mention in this video is how easy it is to actually get going in a hurry if need be.
I use my Outback Wilderness in America almost the same way for camping/hiking trips with my dog. Great video and useful tips.

Great set up Richard. I remember when I went camping in 2015 around Utah and Arizona for two month in my AWD Audi. I used a small tent most of the time, but I slept in the car when I couldn't set up the tent early and it was raining, also stopping in a motel once a week or every 10 days... That trip was when I got into nightscape photography after chasing storms trying to photograph lightning...

Hey, this was pretty fun. Thanks for showing us your setup. Looks like you're a veteran for sure. Got all you need plus a few nice luxuries for added comfort. I know I keep saying but I can't help it, that new video camera is so impressive for low light. Could you imagine going back in time and telling yourself in your 20's or 30's than one day, you'll end up having a camera that can record the Milky Way on video! Your younger self couldn't imagine it. I'm seeing it now in 2021 and I can hardly believe it haha. Anyway, looks like a great road trip and camping setup.

Just Brilliant Richard. Thanks so much for doing this video. Given I have exactly the same car, you have given me a few great ideas. I have been agonising for over a year about how to extend the rear seat back length (when folded down) for the bed. I tried supports from below and modified headrest inserts but your idea with the backboard and strap is just gold. I'll definitely be doing that! You also pointed out a few hidey holes I hadn't thought of using. But most of all, 10 out of 10 for the toilet seat and storage location. I think I'll paint mine gold so it really is a throne! If you don't mind I might email you direct to find out some of the local suppliers for things like the bull bar and lights. I nearly hit another roo last night coming back from the Cascades at 2am. Thanks again and awesome video as usual.

Great video Richard and Subby looks like it gets the job done for you in short term trips. A beautiful set up mate on an importantly reliable vehicle. Have you ever thought of a getting a roof top camper that flips out? Would give you more room in the vehicle for gear/food etc. Im looking at getting one for my Tucson so I can be off the ground in the outback and it only takes minutes to set up and close if I have to move quickly. a great video as usual - I love your work. the one thing I worry about with your setup is how some of that gear could turn into projectiles in the case of an accident. One of our friends is a hospital doctor and he exhorts everyone to have cargo barriers as he's seen some awful cases of even the most mundane articles becoming a projectile and creating terrible damage to the driver and passengers when an accident occurs.

Fantastic video! Love the 'throne', hahaha! If I may suggest...purchase a bunch of double-walled stainless steel water bottles (S'well or similar knock-offs). Those water bottles are really meant for single use and degrade quickly when used over and over, especially when kept in the car (hot/cold exposure), leaching nasty chemicals into the water you are drinking. Just a thought! @Subaru should hire you to make a commercial! Have a great day!

I have similar setup with my Outback although I do use a fridge and dual battery system with the second battery 100ah lithium battery sitting within the spare wheel. Works really well as its constantly recharged through the driving. Since its a large battery I also have a 12v electric blanket that keeps me toasty on those really cold nights (Or just when I want to get into a warm bed).

@Nightscape Images spare wheel is where it is normally stored. The battery sits in the middle of wheel. If on the rare occasion I need to use the spare I just need to unscrew two wires connecting to the battery and the battery comes out and the wheel comes out after that. So it's not a big issue to change the tire. Saves having to stuff around with multiple batteries all the time. There is also an outlet setup on the towbar for plugging in solar power if that's needed. I just use foldable solar panels which store under with the spare wheel too. Rarely used though only if I'm staying in one location and not driving anywhere.

Great to see this run down, organisation is so key. I've had to improvise so many nights because I've forgotten gear or haven't charged batteries. Subaru seems a perfect match, also very fitting given Subaru is the Japanese name for the Pleiades star cluster after which the company was named.

When you started I thought it was going to be an ad for Subaru. But what a great video and insight into how you prepare and travel around. You’ve obviously done quite a bit of this to have it so well organised. I guess the issue for some is feeling safe sleeping in the car out in the middle of no where. Love the little cooker idea and the portable chargers, I could have used one of those last night while I was out shooting, the Aurora that didn’t show up, still there was some nice clear sky to shoot.😀

You’ve got a very similar set up to what I have Richard. I’ve got a Toyota Rav 4 All Wheel Drive set out like that with a double sized mattress in the back. I also have a lot of the sort of gear you take with you as well. If I’m going away for a couple of weeks on a photography road trip I’ll hook up my camper trailer and take that. Great video. As a future Outback owner and astrophotographer, I've been looking at ideas for road trips to dark sites for some deep sky photography. I really like the mod on the Jetboil to mount on a tripod. I've never seen that before. Thanks!

Love the tripod idea for the Jet Boil. I use a Dodge Grand Caravan as my vehicle (Canada) and love it. The seats fold into the floor giving me huge amounts of space. Also, a thing worth considering, depending on where you travel, is a satellite tracker in case of an emergency and you're out of cellphone range.

Very informative. I can see you and I are very much alike. I made a cross country trip alone from Minnesota, USA to produce nightscapes in Badlands, Arches & Canyonlands National Parks, USA and slept in my Mazda CX-30 every night. My portable toilet is a 5 gallon plastic pail with a toilet seat that snaps on. A disposable bag fits the pail so disposing the waste products is clean and easy. I packed food, water, camping equipment, and of course, photography equipment. It was a rewarding experience until the smoke from wildfires made astrophotography impossible. The Mazda CX-30 is a relatively high clearance AWD vehicle. It is smaller than a Subaru Outback, but is large enough for my 5' 5" height and hold all my equipment comfortably.

Seeing all this organisational perfection I wondered about how do you cope with being away from your family for the (extended) times of your trip? Or, say, not only family but regular human conversation and interaction at all? Wouldn't it be great to share all the experiences with a likeminded buddy that's with you once in a while?
I understand this is a very personal question and might be inappropriate for a stranger to ask on YT - in that case please ignore and I apologize upfront.
Thanks as always for watching .. and no, not inappropriate at all. On my last trip through Tasmania my wife flew over to Hobart and I picked her up there after I'd finished the photography part of my journey. From then on we only stayed in proper accommodation but it was really nice to have that extra time with her as a "Holiday". I find that shooting nightscapes the way I do is a lot easier by myself on these trips. I tend to make decisions at the last minute to change location or perhaps find a different place to camp for the night. As much as I do pre-prepare .. it's not until you get on location that you work out exactly what's going to happen.
The other aspect is that my creative energy is most activated when I'm in exploration mode . .with time to spare. So I can do what I want when I want .. this enables me to push myself a bit harder if necessary to get the shot while at a particular location. That's a lot easier for me to do by myself. Also, I don't mind my own company.

Regarding the flexiblity on your trips I fully understand your motivation. My wife and I run a 4wd camper for some (limited... welcome to regulared Europe) outdoor adventures. Being on my own and being with my wifey are two completely different ways of exploring and getting out. I'm even more riskier, or shall I say adventurous, when being on my own, since it feels like only half the responsibility and half the things to having to consider.

Great video. I actually did that in September, as I went to a friend’s farm and spent the whole night out, under the stars ✨! I organized the back of my Toyota RAV4 with everything I needed.
As for next summer, I’ll have our Chevrolet Uplander modified in a way that I can go out for photography trips that last a few days. Isn’t that so wonderful? Nothing in the van 🚐 will be permanent so I can remove all and use the car with it seats. I’m looking forward to that.
This is so much fun and great adventures without the high cost that could go along with it, sometimes!

Nice setup. You usually learn a number of tricks and tips over a period of time whilst travelling. I too prefer a number of smaller chargers and battery packs, like you said much easier to store and much lighter to move around when required rather than a larger pack.

On my 2-3 day astro pano road trips I use x2 3Ltr Camelbak bladders as my primary drinking water. I place them behind my driver seat with drinking piece next to my left arm, I find them extremely handy to sip and drive without taking eye off the road. Yeah I use used 2Lt Juice container if I need more. I also use 1.5Lt pressure/pump water sprayer, this is very handy for general efficient cleaning. My road trip vehicle around WA is a 1990 Nissan 300ZXTT 2+2, not ideal but its done the job for now with a bit of planning. Sleeping arrangement is very cosy in the front passenger seat. Seat goes back about 160 degree which is good enough. But 3 night of staying up all night and scouting during the day is about all I can handle, before going home or getting accommodation for a longer trip.

Thanks so much for watching Jorge. I did all the flying myself. When the drone is following the car or circling an object it's using the "Follow Me" algorithm. Which is automated. Works pretty well and allows me to concentrate on the road.

Always interesting to consider the practicalities of your nightscape road trips Richard, which you clearly have down to a tee 👍. Here in the UK, parking up overnight and sleeping in your vehicle is sometimes discouraged and, where permitted, can often attract a charge. Are you able to park up for the night pretty much where you like in Australia?
Thanks so much for watching Paul. Australia is a very big place and there are many places where you can just pull over and park for the night. Obviously with my setup it doesn't look like anyone's actually camping so most don't even take any notice. Sometimes i'll stop at a recognized camping ground but usually I prefer to be on location. I notice Thomas Heaton is often just pulling up his van anywhere to sleep.
In Queensland it is generally illegal to sleep in a car overnight. There are a few designated spots where it is allowed. I believe that in at least most other Australian states it is legal to sleep in a car overnight. The good thing about an Outback or similar is that it could be very incognito.

Awesome video mate. Just a question, have you thought about running a dual battery system for charging your equipment, your alternator can charge both your car and 2nd batteries while you drive, then you can use your 2nd battery without touching the one under the bonnet. You can then have charging points all over the car, also you can use the 2nd battery to jump-start your car if needed.

@@nightscapeimages.richard you can do it to any car, I have put a system in my wife's ford escape the only difference is that the 2nd battery is in our camper trailer and it works a treat, you wouldn't need to have a huge battery to do what you need it to. An 80 amp hour deep cycle would be fine.

Thanks heaps for taking a look John. No pressure at all. I was always going to make this video .. in fact I intended to do it when in Tasmania, but I just had so much going on down there. You can get in either by the RH rear door or through the liftgate at the back. Depends how you're feeling at the time. It's actually pretty easy to get in and out .. bonus is that I can see if the sky is clearing while lying flat out in the back seat .. Also the sunroof comes in handy for that as well.

I had considered buying a small campervan but they really are expensive and if it is then the only vehicle, one has to drive everywhere in a large gas guzzler. I assume you have an app like litchi that allows the drone to follow the controller ? I also liked your JetBoil. Yes I didn't see many Subarus when I visited the UK a few years ago . .they are very popular here, Japan and the US. I use the automated tracking features in the DJI app. DJI Air2S

My concern, where I live, is to leave my car unattended for long periods of time, even during the day, with all the gear exposed to unwanted attention. How do you deal with it, if it is even a problem over there?

Often I'm not leaving the car anywhere with lots of people hanging around, and to be honest no=one would know what I'm doing or if I have anything of interest inside the car. But having said that . .it's not something that's a great issue over here.

Love your videos Richard. How is the fuel consumption of the Subaru? We drive a troopy that drinks quite a lot of fuel, but sleep in there for weeks or sometimes months at a time.

Hi Richard, great video as always. I opted for a 4WD with roof top tent, fridge, inbuilt kitchen etc. But that's because I also do a lot of outback touring off-grid for a couple of weeks at a time. Not a cheap setup!
I have a question about your Laowa 15mm f/2 that you had on a previous video, and how it compares in light transmission to the Nikon Z 14-24 f/2.8 that you temporarily had. I have the Laowa, and it seems to have lower light transmission than my Z 20mm f/1.8.
A normal setting on a dark night for my 20mm would be 25s, f/1.8, ISO2000. The equivalent for my Laowa would be 30s, f/2, ISO2000 (1/3 stop longer shutter, but 1/3 stop smaller aperture).
However, I find that with the Laowa I really need to bump the ISO to 3200 or 4000, which is 2/3 to 1 stop more. This leads me to believe that the Laowa uses lower quality glass that has less light transmission. In addition, there is significantly more vignetting (which isn't necessarily bad depending on your style).
Did you find something similar between your Laowa and the Z 14-24mm that you had? Unfortunately I can't find t-stops (light transmission) for these lenses, as opposed to f-stops (which is actually a measure of depth of field, and only somewhat correlates to light transmission)
I'd love Nikon to bring out a Z 15mm f/1.8, but I don't think it's going to happen anytime soon, so I'm trying to determine if it's worth selling my Laowa and buying the 14-24 f/2.8. It's worth it for me if it has the same light transmission (the 14-24 1 stop slower but better glass giving an equivalent exposure) because it's versatile for daytime landscapes. I know you might say just stack a bunch of photos, but I'm most interested in timelapses.

Hey Ben, thanks so much for watching. Sounds like you've got a great setup with your vehicle. Regarding the Laowa .. to be honest, it's not a patch on the Nikon 20mm fq1.8 or the Nikon 14-24 fs.8. But of course it's nowhere near as expensive. I'd say the vignetting contributes to the lesser light transmission s well. I can't get a sharp image across the frame with the Laowa so I'd say my copy is de-centred. Nothing unusual for these cheap lenses. It's unfortunate really because the form factor is very good and the rugged build quality and small size are all great.
I pretty much only use it for timelapses as I can crop some of the aberrations out with the 16x9 aspect ratio . .and for that it's ok. If I had a lot of spare cash the 14-24 f2.8S lens is much better but I find it hard to justify when I rarely shoot at those wider focal lengths. I did try out the 14-24 and it was pretty good . .very sharp but I still preferred the 20mm lens.
Like you I'd love a Nikon 15mm f1.8 or even an f2.8 lens .. native Z mount.
@@nightscapeimages.richard I have the same decentred problem with my Laowa. At least, I suspect that's the case because I just can't get all the stars as pinpoints across the frame.
When you say that the Z 14-24 2.8 is 'much better', do you not only mean in sharpness but also in light transmission? So basically with the same settings, the image from the 14-24 would appear brighter?
Or is it only because of the less vignetting? (if the 14-24 actually has less?)
@@bencollins7684 I can't say with any surety that the Nikon lens transmits more light but that's my suspicion. I didn't have both the lenses at the same time and therefore no side by side comparison.

Great video Richard. I like your simple set up. I’m 6”4 and have slept comfortably in my 2019 outback. Unfortunately the base board I’m using is one length so its easier for me to have it on the passenger side which means that the base and inflatable mattress needs to be narrow (for now).
