Hello! This is my first year homeschooling, we pulled our girls out of public school and we all have been loving homeschool so much! We started using GrammarLand and my girls love it!! We are about halfway through the book and both my fifth grader and sixth grader love it! I hope your daughter loves it as well! Thanks for all the wonderful information from your videos!
@@melissawilliamson3218 Hi! Thanks for watching! I am so glad to hear that you are loving Homeschooling! 💕 We read the Introduction to Grammar-Land today and my daughter was skeptical at first, but smiled a few times, so I think she will wind up liking it! Thanks so much for saying hi! 👋🏻
Rod and Staff is wonderful! We’ve been using it for years for my younger child and she is “ahead” by years. It’s my favorite curriculum we’ve ever used.
Multiple people have mentioned Rod & Staff! Thank you for sharing it too! 😊 I don’t think I have seen it mentioned much on the channels I watch, but I will definitely be keeping my eyes open! Thank you!
I definitely want to hear how you like Granmarland. Grammar has been a struggle for us too. I started First Language Lessons level 1 with my 2nd grade daughter who’s reading at a k level. And it definitely drills it in. I don’t think she’ll ever forget the definition of a noun. 😂 not complaining though. But wondering if Grammarland would be good for my older kiddos.
@@homeschoollifemom We are starting on Monday! So we will see! If anything it just looks like a fun book to read. 📚 I will definitely include it in my October Homeschool Update. 😃
For grammar we have always used Rod & Staff. We also use Sonlight language arts, and I know mine wouldn’t remember the grammar rules talked about in the copywork application day 2, if it wasn’t for R&S. Sonlight la day 2 gives my kids to practice some more grammar and of course writing, but I wouldn’t use it alone. I can’t recommend Rod & Staff English enough.
@@jerilyn-ourhomeschooltable we used their preschool too, …have kept their books, their colourings are too precious. I have tried other subjects with Rod & Staff also and those were not a hit, funny how it is. But their English is very effective, zero fluff. We use it as instructed, I know many adapt it, and do most of it orally, which I wouldn’t recommend using that way. It’s not a heap of writing.
My 1st grader liked First Language Lessons also (she loved the poems), but for some reason I could not be consistent with it and we only got 40 lessons into it. My fault. I knew I would be the same way again this year so we're doing CLE language arts and Gentle Grammar and those are going well. But I like your point about the memory work from FLL and maybe I'll add in Level 2 next year.
@@YasminB-u9d Yes, the poems! 💕 I think as homeschool moms we need to consider how much we like teaching a curriculum. If we aren’t a fan, it can be really hard to continue on with it. So I totally understand where you’re coming from. I STRONGLY considered CLE as well, but since we were already doing CLE Reading I thought it might be too much to do the LA program as well. I think my daughter would like the sentence diagramming.
My journey has been similar to yours. We started with Sonlight. My children weren’t remembering any grammar and got overwhelmed with weekly writing. We switched to BJU and again they didn’t retain the grammar lessons and didn’t like the writing assignments. I switched to Fix It for one year. I liked it, but my children found it boring. They were also not retaining the lessons. I had switched to CLE for reading and math and was so impressed with the amount of review. Also, with 7 kids I loved how directions were written for the children to read and understand independently. So last year I switched them all to CLE. The results have been amazing. Like you I now have a different plan for my younger children. My 6th child used CLE K last year and CLE 1 for the 3 subjects this year. It’s such a gentle writing program as well.
@@Grace_Filled_Homeschool That’s so great that CLE is going really well. That is what I had intended to go with for 4th grade, but then did Sonlight. When I first started I had grand plans for how I would do things. Then I finally realized, things change. And it’s ok.
This video just reinforced what I've been wanting to do with my middle child. I wasn't sure if I would stick with all the levels of First Language Lessons, but you're so right! And Grammarland looks great for my oldest, too! We're just starting Beowulf Grammar with her, and it's been so fun so far.
@@rebekahian Others have mentioned Beowulf Grammar and I have seen some channels talking about it. I would love to hear how you like it once you get in to it! 😀
@jerilyn-ourhomeschooltable we've used some other Guest Hollow curriculum and really love it. They offer a feast of options to pick and choose from. And I adore the owners of the company. The sweetest couple with such a great heart for homeschoolers. I'll come back here to report how Beowulf Grammar is going later in the year😊
Curious about grammar land We used Shurley English which really did a great job with reinforcing grammar concepts. It uses a question answer flow. I am eclectic also, I actually think Shirley English is classical.🤔 Never thought about it lol Have you used the IEW fix it Cards. You could leave them out as visuals.
@@learningwithboys7431 I haven’t used the cards, but I have recently thought about getting them. I am also considering switching to Winston Grammar because of their card system. But that wouldn’t be until next year. I might have to go back and watch your Grammar videos. 👍🏻 Thanks for watching!
Oh my goodness! I was JUST about to pull the trigger and order BJU English 2 for 2nd grade neurodivergent son. We have been doing the Good and the Beautiful and it's been rough for him. His twin sister is doing great with it. But I actually just so happened to have a copy of First Language Lessons 1 I found at a consignment sale a few years back. I honestly didn't think much of it when I first flipped through it but I liked the poems in it. I will continue to do TGATB but I will be focusing on this as our main spine. Thank you for your insight!
@@SnowAngelfish I would definitely give First Language Lessons a try! Especially since you already have it! 😃 BJU English IS a great program and I know a lot of people who absolutely love it! So I know it works! So keep it as an option still if First Language Lessons isn’t a good fit. I hope you find something that works well for him!
My son is in 3rd grade this year. We had been using The Good and the Beautiful but my son has been resisting more and more so we are switching things up and trying Memoria Press Grammar Recitation I. It is also a classical type approach with copy work and memory work. The lessons are very short and to the point so I am hoping it is the change we need to revive grammar and end the language arts frustration we have been experiencing. For writing we have been using Brave writer (very loosely) and do fun simple projects. I decided not pushing formal writing too hard this year and that has been work well for us.
@@jerilyn-ourhomeschooltable Thus far we have only done the first 5 lessons, but we are liking it. My son appreciates the shorter straight to the point lessons. Grammar recitation is the only curriculum we have tired from Memoria Press so far. I know they recommend it alongside their Latin curriculum but it seems to work well as a stand alone curriculum. I'm hoping that memorizing the grammar facts now will help my son in the future. I have also looked into a fun engaging curriculum called Beowulf's grammar that we may try to integrate as well.
