I've been looking into this for my firefighter dad. I'm glad to hear SU&SD's opinion/example

Hi guys. Thanks for the review. I think there is a bit of context required for this game. It’s not something my gaming group would choose to play, there are too many other titles that we get far more enjoyment from with the limited time we have to play. However, this game is my 10yr old daughter’s go-to board game. She absolutely loves it, and therefore for that fact alone so do I. She creates her own narrative by naming all the characters as we reveal them, makes up backstory about why they are in particular rooms, and is always particularly delighted when we rescue Mittens the cat! She even creates story for the initial explosions which relieves the setup timescale. The story becomes the best part of the game with everyone joining in, and it adds so much to the sense of delight or frustration when we either win or the building collapses. I understand it’s not for everyone, but if a game can inspire imagination, frustration, fun, creativity, social interaction and a sense of achievement in my kids, then it was money well spent for me. After all, what else is board gaming about if not that?

Wait, this is the opening opener? It is! I wouldn't mind seeing more of them.

Sorry, I guess I wasn't clear. I've seen all the openers, my memory just tells me it's been a while since we had a new one!

5:45 "In addition to that, you've got explosions." Best marketing ever.

They incorrectly placed two cubes on the blown-out doors. No wonder they thought it was so hard!

I played a couple games of this at my local board game store with a friend from out of town. The first game we played I screwed up the explosion rules (thinking they acted like Pandemic where explosions would constantly chain into each other). The house collapsed almost instantly.
We ended up beating the advanced ruleset, but we also each controlled two fireman, so it was a lot easier. Setup for the game is painful, but it's still a fun experience.

"Frankly, if you can't use an axe to chop down walls... what's the point of being a fireman?" The game is so good at evoking its theme, it got Matt to flawlessly roleplay a real fireman without even trying.

We've watched the entire building fall down in order to save the cat!

All future SUSD episodes should have cocktail recipes and/or fire.

Spectacular 999 parody sequence. Not sure how many will recognise it though...

I would recommend a Flaming B-52 AND burning some toast. Nothing succeeds like excess.
    (Or something like that)

The promise of this game is so much more than the delivery. I really want a second, refined version. The idea of crashing through walls which makes the building weaker while trying to find a person and fires are spreading is phenomenal. I don't get why the question mark tokens can have NOTHING on one side. Something should happen every time.

    • @ToddBarchok
      @ToddBarchok 6 років тому +2

If I remember right, there's an optional advanced rule that question mark tokens with nothing on them become hot spots or flammable materials once you flip them over. This adds tension if they get flipped over as a result of flames reaching them.

From the first half of the video I'm thinking it's a bit like a cross between Pandemic and the rescue missions from XCOM

It will make it harder if you put damage cubes on destroyed doors...

Love this game; the base game can and will kick you ass, but it has quite a lot expansions for variety. Just in case you think you might be getting the hang of it.

You played Hotshots, Matt? I found it to be a far better fire fighting co-op game than Flashpoint, but it is admittedly much harder to win.

I liked the review and really enjoyed playing the game. My first time was playing as the rescue dog, cant remember if we one or loose but it was such fun dashing about and whimpering at doors waiting for those slow humans to do stuff. Its worth noting the new Tragic Events expansion changes the game significantly and seems to make it both harder and more interesting too. Previously our fire fighting group would succeed 3 out of 4 mission attempts but now it fail 3 out of 4. The events can lead to some very strange games such as a saved cat that went running back into the flames to save its board game collection!?! We lost the game but at least the cat also burnt with its oh so precious games collection.

Matt, it IS you being an utter evil bastard. If you let the kitty die in the fire not only is it right that you lose this game but you should automatically lose the next game you play as well, even if its unrelated, as pennance. :P

    More reruns than cartoon network.

Flash Point can be found for $30 in the US and about £30 on Amazon UK.
(Edit) And yet it is still the most expensive of the last 5 reruns they've posted.

I wish I liked this review. I like the game, and I don't mind that you seem to dislike it. But your review is just a series of disjointed observations, and less well-crafted than your typical reviews that I have become accustomed to on this channel.
