Worst alcoholic dad fail is my dad got a DUI with me in the car on the way home from his favorite bar and he had to call his dad,my grandpa to bail him out and come get us and my grandpa showed up blacked out and got a DUI we made it into the local paper with the headline "Landys family has a bad day"

I was a "bar kid". I had the high score on multiple video games in the bars where my dad drank...I drank a million Roy Rogers...I ate a million Tombstone pizzas...and survived the boredom one handful of quarters and jerky sticks at a time.

I remember being 9 years old riding with my Dad in his truck while he was swinging back coors light. He blew through a red light and was pulled over almost immediately. He had me cover the case of beer with my leg and the cop actually let him go. Ah, fun times with Dad.

When we where kids my family walked out of an olive garden after my dad looked at the prices on the menu. I grew up thinking olive garden must be hella expensive and waited until I was 30 to try it. Man was I surprised when I found out 2 pounds of pasta and a gallon of wine only cost $14
It had to be a really special occasion if we got to go. I live in West Virginia..
My dad scoffed no matter what the prices were. Mom could have a friend use her employee discount for us, saving 50%, and he'd still complain.

I grew up in Wisconsin hard working dad im a bar kid. His famous line was "one more then were gone" my mom would always have dinner petrified on the stove n my dad would bring bar food at 12:55 ish n expect us to wake up n eat it . Been there boys been there
I was born in 85 and I always remember stopping at a bar on the way home from our cabin. Good times would do anything for it to be 25 years ago.

This reminds of old Opie and Anthony shows when Anthony talked about his dad taking he and his brother and sister to the bar while his dad hit on women. Dan can make any story hilarious. It cracks me up that he refers to his parents by their first names.😂

That’s a for sure sign of parents being alcoholics if their kids call them by their first names. Been calling my old man “Richard” since the 5th grade. It’s more so a sign of losing respect for the parent from seeing them hammered and a sign of endearment from taking advantages of drunk parents like skipping school or guilting them into getting you gifts.
My stepdad used to take me and my step brothers to the bar back in the 80s. We'd drink 7-up, eat pizza combos, play Pole Position and tunes on the jukebox. Good shit. Quality time.

Being a Denver native, my favorite Dan moments are when he's talking about Colorado/Denver.
Born and raised in Denver so to hear him talk about these places makes me laugh. I can recall them all cause I had a similar situation. Ahh the good ole days!!!!!

Dan's childhood friend here...I back him up on being in a bar as a child...my Pops raised me in bars too...maybe it was just a Colorado kid thing....they're still allowed in up until a certain hour...
I wonder if the rule is if they serve food (have a kitchen) and have entertainment (arcade) kids are allowed until like 10. Im from Missouri and was a bar kid but u always remember food and games🤔

I grew up with British perants all of us grew up as bar kids I clearly remember going to the family local bar so often when I was tired from playing I had my own tab for sodas and fries 😂😂😂😂😂
When I was 12 my uncle, utterly hammered, drove me and my cousin home after a big win for our team. We live in a rural area, lots of fields around, so my uncle had his head out window going 70mph+, mooing at the cows and swerving all our the bumpy road.
We thought it was hilarious.

I used to go to this bar with my dad too. I remember him taking me up there New Year’s Day around 11 am and the place was wide open, trashed, and abandoned. The keys were still in the door... also remember my 21st birthday there drinking one of those fishbowl drinks... amazing ribs too.... RIP Caledonia’s 🤘

Same here used to pass out after a mad sugar rush from Coca-Cola and panda pop's to the smell of cigarettes and to the sound of fruit machines and drunk's arguing who's turn it was to get the drinks in. And don't forget the burning eyes from all the smock

My dad was an alcoholic too. He left my mom when I two years old.
When I was a kid, I'd visit him and he'd day drink while I rode bikes w/ my cousin and stepbro. It was rural town so not much else to do.
I would visit him at the bar (Stockmen's Club), my version of Caledonia's. They had glazed doughnuts for $0.25 which I loved and instead of video games I'd go into the weird gym they had. It had one of those Universal exercise gym (like a cube with plates and benches for like 10 exercises).
However, my favorite piece of equipment was the Belt Vibration Machine.
I didn't see him between 10 and 17 but he was admitted to a rehab place after quadruple bypass surgery I went to visit him. Another guy there was telling me how much he liked whippets (N2o) and his only advice was to not do those.
we had some good times when I was younger but he checked out early (50s) from cirrhosis. He split back to mexico where he 'finished the job'.
Lmao some of my favorite memories with my dad as a child were going to our town bar called the smokehouse. I was in there in a stroller before I could remember. Where I learned to play pool and poker. The bar lady Margery who was a big lady wore to much make up and perfume helped me with homework and cooked for me loved me and I loved her. 🤣🤣🤣
There was a time when I was 13 or 14, I’m 37 now, I was the only person with my dad and his two buddies that could drive after a Pittsburgh Pirates games at Three rivers.

Dude i grew up down the street from dans liquor in MV. You’re a year older than me so I never went inside to buy booze but that place used to be a landmark for me and my friends.
My dad used to take my sister and I to a bar named Looney Tunes.It was owned by his gangster buddies. To double down,my mom was a manager of a bar. so when we were with her we would do odd jobs for tips from the staff.lol.The mid 90's was fun times, and they wouldn't outlaw smoking indoors for another 15 years.

My dad did the same thing, but those are actually some of the fondest memories I have of him. He would take my brother and I to a bar as adolescents, and we would shoot some pool together (me and my bro vs him), and then he would give us quarters for video games so he could have a few drinks and step outside to smoke (tobacco and weed), and then we would shoot pool again. We were always within eye-shot, so it wasn't like we were unattended, and it isn't like we were drinking beer (though my mom never bought soda for the house, so drinking soda at the bar was a treat), and to this day I don't really see anything wrong with it, except the driving home part (he should have had our mom pick us up, or taken a cab). He also didn't get blackout drunk at that point in our lives; enough that he probably shouldn't have been driving, but not stumbling and slurring drunk- that came in our late teens.
As far as the mom and dad splitting thing, unlike these guys, although my dad was very similar, my mom completely stopped partying when I was born (I am the oldest). He was a party animal who did everything under the sun, and she was pretty much the stereotypical disapproving, responsible parent (maybe had 1-2 beers on special occasions, like twice a year, and never did drugs). When they split, he paid her for the first few years, when he still had it somewhat together, but it wasn't like she really needed it (I was 17 when they split, and my brother was 15), because she could've supported us on her own, and we actually lived with him at first. As he started his downward spiral (my mom was no longer around to nag him into some semblance of self-control), my brother moved in with her, and I had already moved out (I skipped a grade early in school, so I graduated at 17), so when his life started really going down hill and he couldn't afford to pay, I have to give my mom a lot of credit, because she didn't try to go after the money he owed. She finished raising my brother for the final few years alone, and he pretty much gave in to hard drugs and eventually died. But again, to her credit, when my dad was living in those sh*tty "pay-by-the-week" hooker hotels and going from high school level job to job (gas stations, fast food, etc.), she didn't try to make his life any worse by going after what he had been ordered to pay. She was doing so well that, not only could she raise my brother alone, I am pretty sure she "lent" him money from time to time (I once found an crazy long email with a story that sounded like bullsh*t about his car getting stolen, and him needing to get it back, but really I think it was repossessed or in police impound). So yeah, even though she was pretty uptight and controlling at the time, and he was usually more fun in the beginning (although he never exposed me directly to drugs or anything, once I started smoking weed, I figured out that he did too, and eventually we started smoking together in my late teens), I have to give her a lot of credit for not being one of those women who tried to ruin his life after the divorce- he was doing that all on his own.
P.S. I also am really glad that I had them both, because they were such polar opposites. At the time I hated it, because they made each other miserable, but looking back I think it would have been worse to live with either of them alone through my teen years. She was uptight and controlling (no sugar snacks/soda, banned shows like Rosanne, Simpsons, Beavis and Butthead, etc.), but was responsible and dependable, and he was fun and let us be kids, but was somewhat reckless and irresponsible. I had the parent that would let me be "supervised" while I experimented with drinking and smoking weed in my mid/late teens, and would let us sneak shows that my mom had banned, but I also had at least one parent that I could call for rides that was guaranteed to be sober and reliable. One parent made sure that bills were paid and we had all we needed, and one parent that would take us out and treat us to fun (he'd get buzzed and take us to go karts or laser tag). Either one alone would have been way sh*ttier; he was unreliable and it probably would have been scary to not have a safety net as a kid, and she would have been so repressive that I might have rebelled so hard that I ended up like my dad (I gave up alcohol before I was even 21, and although I smoked weed nearly every day for 15 years, I never got into hard drugs). Because of the dual opposing influences, I was able to pick one vice that made me happy but was safe and on the lighter side (weed), but I also was responsible and independent; I learned from both their mistakes and their good qualities. I learned discipline/responsibility from my mom, but also not to be a controlling, career-driven tight-ass, and from my dad I learned that some fun things are safe and made life enjoyable, but also to avoid excess and other, more dangerous types of fun. I had some authority against which to rebel, but also learned not to take rebellion to the extremes. I used to hate their "stay together for the kids" argument for why they continued to make each other miserable, but as an adult I am actually glad that they did so.

I spent every summer down in Freeland, PA (coal mining country). I’m from NH. Anyways, I spent all day in the dive-iest of bars with him all day, every day. They made me roast beef grilled cheeses, and unlimited lives on the pinball machine (Bingo Pinball! It’s bizarre) and lots of billiards and darts. All alone, but my dad and his pals would drink from about 10am to 4:30pm. The bar was called Chi-Chis (Pronounced ChiCH-ease) and it was all Polish guys. So dark that the sun hurt when we left at 4-5pm. He’d be SLAMMERED. I drove stick shift since 7years old for my too-drunk dad. When he drove (he had a Camaro!) he would hide beers under the styrofoam Pepsi labels on the small glass bottles at the time (Early-Mid 80’s). My dad passed a few years ago. It sucks. But I love him, and I know he did his very fuckin’ best to love me the only ways he knew how (which included absurd toy purchases....I got a robot once!). Miss you dad. I hope they have Miller Light in heaven. I’m sure it’s on tap in hell 😸

I actually know about _most_ video games _because_ of bars. Sadly(but also greatly), the bar i was at most as a kid had the "select a game" console with the wwf wrestling game, excite bike etc. The bummer was that it was timed play so you ran through quarters regardless how good at any game you were.
That same bar got the Terminator 2 pinball game when it came out and i couldnt beleive a game could cost 50cents.

Yeah to me a bar was always an awesome chance at playing a new game in the late 80s and early 90s. We had Atari and Nintendo and such at home but arcade games were different. More often than not they had old games but I was still content to pump a couple bucks into Spy Hunter or Operation Wolf. I was more of a bowling alley kid, they always had the kids room but there wasn't anybody watching us, you'd just hook up with other kids and play video games.
Oh man. Milwaukee’s Best Light was our go to beer all through college. Miller Lite was only for special occasions.

My Dad's name was Gary. I spent 4-6 weeks each summer. We drove around in an old Ford pick-up w/out seatbelts., while he pounded buds. He smoked everywhere, and hung out in bars, and went fishin. He called his giant silken nose the GutZler gin blossom. Spooky.
Bar kid here for sure.. grew up in a bar that my mom worked at and that workers there for 30 years before she passed away lung cancer.. still go to that bar once a week along with my dad..
My Dad also took me to bars growing up in the 70s. I played pool and shuffle board while my Dad drank.

I've went to, been to and also have been drug out of bars with my dad all through my life and I wouldn't have it any other way. Having your hair awkwardly tuft by a calcified hand from a drunk father while you played Altered Beast at the local pub late on a school night is one of the memories that built my generation (85') you can trust a bar kid with a full wallet and an empty house and both will be the same when you get home.

Used to go to a bar with a trough out front so people could ride their horses there. Used to date the bartender so I was there everyday. One guy would ride his horse in and get absolutely hammered everytime. Get on his horse to leave and pass out immediately. The horse knew the way home so it would just walk back and he'd end up waking up in the barn.

I was raised really Mormon. My parents have never had a drop of alcohol. I didn't have my first beer until I was 38. These are crazy childhood stories that I can't relate to.
I'm from Denver I grew up in Aurora, I totally know and been to Caledonia which is torn down and there's like a gas station and other establishments on the corner now

I got the boom box for my birthday one year because dad used all the money on drinking and lady friends. He later got sober and developed lung cancer. He’s gone but we still all laugh at his failures as a father.

I have a childhood friend and no one else who understands my childhood until I heard Dan Soder talk during this segment.
My Dad worked part time at a bar around the corner from our apartment when I was three. I would just wander over periodically to see him so he'd sit me on a stool with a soda and call my Mom to tell her where I was so she wouldn't freak out. :p
Dan: “Becky said I was cold and unfriendly.”
Becky: “Well.. You do put up a wall”

My Grandpa would take me deer hunting and my sole purpose was to carry a backpack of Budweiser's .

As a fellow 80s kid who spent a large part of my childhood in bars, this hits very close to home. Upside, I'm great at pool and pinball. Downside I'm a raging alcoholic.
My mom was a bartender most of my life. She asks me if I remember being at the Knotty Pine in Toledo standing on the pool table when I was 4 years old. I played skee ball and pool with pool sharks for years. Most of these guys died now since they are all in their 50s but growing up and running into guys that I used to play against would recognize me for years. Lol.
