Sun Sugar has taken over Sun Golds for me. James, so thankful for all of your tips especially now. It's becoming more and more important to grow your own fruits and veggies. Look at all of the recalls, now cukes in so many states. I don't know what's going on with famrs, but it's sad. If you don't grow your own, find a local farm to support.

I'm no tomato gourmet, but I haven't found any difference in taste between vine ripened vs ripening on the kitchen counter. In addition to avoiding splits, plucking them in the orange stage avoids bird & insect attacks that come with vine ripened. To each their own...

Thanks to your videos, I now have some ideas for how to avoid these problems next year. However, the tomatoes, cucamelons, green beans, and ground cherry are doing great! Learned about the cucamelons and ground cherries from you, and they will be a fixture from now on! Thank you for the great content that you put out, and happy harvesting to you! 😊

The purple Cherokee tomatoes I have on my covered patio that get lots of Simon but are right at the edge under the roof and don’t get rain have very little cracking, but the ones I have out in the yard in grow bags start cracking a couple weeks before they even blush. Watering is definitely the cause of the cracking I’ve had. Ive had some split open too, but the main thing I deal with on pretty much every single one is brown streaks like scars circling around the top. I’m definitely going to try ones that aren’t as prone to these issues next year.

For anyone with a heavy pest problem... there's a common tomato idea "if it's blushin', you ain't rushin'" meaning, as long as your tomatoes hit the "breaking point" of blushing there is zero taste research saying that vine-ripened tastes any better than paperbag-ripened tomatoes.
Sweet cherry tomatoes 100 do split every time after the rain.So I have to pick them before the rain and let them ripening on the kitchen counter. Easy to grow,tons of cherry tomatoes and diseases resistant from Vermont.
Growing Sungold this year for the first time and I agree - they are fantastic!! Everyone we've given them too raves about them - eyes wide in surprise when they try them! But yes they have been splitting with so much rain this year. At least they're so prolific, there are some that don't and can be harvested!

I just turned my sloped back yard into a terraced raise bed garden. Three 30' long rows 4' wide. I added 6 inches of 50/50 mix soil and 3inches of straw for mulch. The grass is growing back like I did nothing. How do I reduce the grass growth in a new garden space like this?
Good video James, I've often heard that you should pick tomatoes off the plant just before they fully ripen and I'm going to be more proactive with that this year with mine, I live in NSW, Australia and we're almost out of winter and into spring over here. days are getting warmer slowly and got my tomatoes on the go already.

I select my tomatoes by taste as most importantly.I just raise more plants to have enough and nearly give half away usually. Just pick as soon as the color change happens and saves most tomatoes. Thanks
Would love a video on blight - we had a terrible year for it this year and we even pruned lower branches, used weed suppressant fabric around the plants, watering with irrigation, and still lost so many plants to it! I grew probably about 150 plants so I could still get a harvest since this is the third year where it's been bad. But I'd love to know any more tricks to prevent the disease without giving up my heirlooms and going straight to hybrids......

Did the sun golds this year and wow it def is the best by far. We made sauce / pizza sauce with our san marzanos but complimented it with sun golds. It has an orange hue and by far the best sauce we have ever had.

Ohhh, I love that Mountain Magic variety you showed us. I am growing those next year!! I did experience some cracking this year. I do use mulch, but mine is mixed in to my organic soil. This is rich soil I have built up for years. It was hard work, SO worth the effort. I will try placing some mulch on top next year. Thank you James. I do not comment often, but I always watch. I have top heavy tall tomatoes that are leaning and their bending those green plastic stakes. Most of my tomatoes I stake with 1/2" electrical conduit and those are fine.
James I love your videos! Thank you for all your dedication to helping me and others learn about gardening. In a few months I’m going to try and overwinter my favorite pepper plants after watching your video. Also right now I start my plants putting bone meal, blood meal, sea 90 minerals, mycorrhiza granules, baking soda, lime and out a handful of time release organic fertilizer. It’s a lot of expense. If I purchased your organic all purpose fertilizer would I need to add some of or all of the above ingredients or would your secret fertilizer be enough? Please inform me if you have time. I’m on a fixed income so I’m really trying to reduce the expense for next spring season, but I work hard on my garden and want it to also be successful . Sorry so long. Thank so much!😊

I hope you get well soon. I live in southern Italy and my local bar owner’s daughter became anorexic 2 years ago overnight. He is my friend also and so, I spoke with my cousin in the UK who, although has mainly worked with the most dangerous criminals in the UK, has some experience anorexia. He told me that every case he has dealt with basically boils down to the person wanting to control something that they can control, to compensate for something that happened or is happening their lives that they could not/can not control. E.g. abuse, bad relationship or none-loving parents etc. He said that quite often these people were “fussy” eaters before and this is certainly the case with my friends 22 year old daughter, who would only eat chicken whenever the family ate meat. I do not know the cause behind her illness, they are a very nice family and she loves her parents and siblings. I mentioned this to her father. She had been receiving psychiatric help but they decided to change her therapist and she is “much more strict” with her. This seems to be working because over the past 3 months, she has put on weight and although is still very thin, she doesn’t look so sick and drawn. I obviously mentioned how well she was doing and she was very positive and said “slowly, slowly”. It was great to hear because before she wouldn’t even accept that there was a problem and although she’s an absolutely lovely, smart young lady, she can be stubborn (she’s Calabrese, after all!🤣). I don’t know your circumstances or the level of treatment that you are receiving but I just thought I would mention this, on the off-chance that it may resonate with you and perhaps help. I know it’s not easy, I used to have an anorexic girlfriend although she’d luckily chosen a weight where she felt good that, although underweight slightly, was still ok and not dangerous but she worked so hard (gym, exercise when waking up and before bed, alternate “non-eating days” (that meant she ate some Quaker Oats with water one day and the next day “eating day” she would do the same but also eat a vegetarian dinner in the evening)). She was also quite OCD, she cleaned her shoes every time she took them off and by Friday evening, she knew what she was going to wear everyday for the next week. Sorry for the intrusion but better said that not. Good luck and I’m sure you got this!👍

If a fav tomato is one prone to split would it benefit to plant that tomato in a mound shape rather than flat ground garden to allow for better drying top down of the soil by being in a mound and possibly prevent the splitting?

It rained a lot last week. Half of mine split. Last September we had seven days of rain which ruined the large tomatoes.
That much rain is just hard to cope with
Purple Bumble Bee is my favorite cherry tomato. It doesn't have an overpowering flavor and grows large for a cherry tomato

I have top heavy tall tomatoes that are leaning and their bending those green plastic stakes. Most of my tomatoes I stake with 1/2" electrical conduit and those are fine.

James I love your videos! Thank you for all your dedication to helping me and others learn about gardening. In a few months I’m going to try and overwinter my favorite pepper plants after watching your video. Also right now I start my plants putting bone meal, blood meal, sea 90 minerals, mycorrhiza granules, baking soda, lime and out a handful of time release organic fertilizer. It’s a lot of expense. If I purchased your organic all purpose fertilizer would I need to add some of or all of the above ingredients or would your secret fertilizer be enough? Please inform me if you have time. I’m on a fixed income so I’m really trying to reduce the expense for next spring season, but I work hard on my garden and want it to also be successful . Sorry so long. Thank so much!😊

I hope you get well soon. I live in southern Italy and my local bar owner’s daughter became anorexic 2 years ago overnight. He is my friend also and so, I spoke with my cousin in the UK who, although has mainly worked with the most dangerous criminals in the UK, has some experience anorexia. He told me that every case he has dealt with basically boils down to the person wanting to control something that they can control, to compensate for something that happened or is happening their lives that they could not/can not control. E.g. abuse, bad relationship or none-loving parents etc. He said that quite often these people were “fussy” eaters before and this is certainly the case with my friends 22 year old daughter, who would only eat chicken whenever the family ate meat. I do not know the cause behind her illness, they are a very nice family and she loves her parents and siblings. I mentioned this to her father. She had been receiving psychiatric help but they decided to change her therapist and she is “much more strict” with her. This seems to be working because over the past 3 months, she has put on weight and although is still very thin, she doesn’t look so sick and drawn. I obviously mentioned how well she was doing and she was very positive and said “slowly, slowly”. It was great to hear because before she wouldn’t even accept that there was a problem and although she’s an absolutely lovely, smart young lady, she can be stubborn (she’s Calabrese, after all!🤣). I don’t know your circumstances or the level of treatment that you are receiving but I just thought I would mention this, on the off-chance that it may resonate with you and perhaps help. I know it’s not easy, I used to have an anorexic girlfriend although she’d luckily chosen a weight where she felt good that, although underweight slightly, was still ok and not dangerous but she worked so hard (gym, exercise when waking up and before bed, alternate “non-eating days” (that meant she ate some Quaker Oats with water one day and the next day “eating day” she would do the same but also eat a vegetarian dinner in the evening)). She was also quite OCD, she cleaned her shoes every time she took them off and by Friday evening, she knew what she was going to wear everyday for the next week. Sorry for the intrusion but better said that not. Good luck and I’m sure you got this!👍

Help us out about hardwood mulch. The only garden stores left in our area is Walmart, Lowes, Rural King. With limited choices tells us what to buy. Thank you.

If a fav tomato is one prone to split would it benefit to plant that tomato in a mound shape rather than flat ground garden to allow for better drying top down of the soil by being in a mound and possibly prevent the splitting?

Hi James! I love your content! Love Tuck ❤❤❤ I know he loves cukes and carrots but what veggies or fruit do you avoid giving Tuck? Just like your garden boss Tuck, I have two garden inspectors, Champ and Freyja 🐶🐶 and the love their garden snacks!! They love ripe tomatoes but I had to cut back since too much is not good for them. I’ve replaced with green beans. I know other night shades like potatoes are not good. But I’ve seen you give Tuck peppers. I’ve tried it too. Would you do a video on what not to give dogs and why. Not sure if I missed it. Thank you. Best, Fi
