What a gem, thanks very much for posting. I was 16/17 when this was broadcast, and remember KCR being a breath of fresh air when it started.. loud & clear in Liverpool ! ILR did have to tick all the boxes, ie broadcasting religion, country, arts, classical in 2 hour chunks or so in addition to the more 'Radio 1 style Fayre'. This kept Radio Luxembourg going even with their crappy 208 signal as for around 4 hours a night... as there was no stations in GB broadcasting top 40 music!!!!...(yes R1 went talk/alternative from 7-midnight). The pirates came along again this time on VHF and scored an open goal. Moving to 2016, there is little regulation in the independent sector, like ITV, the big stations are no longer 'local' and the music output is the same top 40 biggest hits/limited variety oldies/ and no help to upcoming bands. In a word, all sounding the same (at least here). I don't think anyone gives a monkeys anymore though due to the rise of the net/UA-cam/Spotify etc..!

the problem with local radio in the UK now, its all owned by the same company, go up and down the country and you hear clone stations in every town/county, if there was a good time for pirate stations, now is the time, but who really listens to radio these days? most people use digital services and the youth barely know what radio is any more

I love the old file on 4 theme tune which, alas, the programme doesn't use much these days, if at all.

I used to have a recording of this on a battered old C60 - thanks so much for posting! :-)

I love how quaint this issue looks, viewed through 2020 eyes.
"What do you mean untrained people can have a public platform to air their opinions and other people's music without regulation!!"
I wonder what they would have made of a platform like UA-cam...

The law process (defining, ensuring) should be more adaptable, in response not only to top-down but also to grass-roots level - that which distinguishes true democracies from stubborn and non-specialist centralism.
