  • Video taken on January 10, 2015. At the first clip of this video, I was the person who pressed the button to sound off this siren for the quarterly test. This is a quarterly test of the Town of Tryon's Emergency Siren. This siren is tested at the first Saturday of each quarterly at 12:00 PM ET. 'But' this siren wasn't tested on January 3, 2015, because of the bad weather. The test was rescheduled to January 10, 2015. This siren is a 3 phase model (Model 5A). It has a very slow start up. I was told this siren never had that of a slow start up before. I believe it was the cold weather that affected the motor and the wires to make this siren have a very slow start up. It was 30° when this siren was tested. This siren has a rare old 8 port chopper. I didn't even know this siren had an 8 port chopper when I was listening to it live. This siren was so loud that I thought it sounded like it's a low toned 12 port siren the whole time it was sounding. I was wearing ear protection. Here is the history about this siren; I believe this siren was first installed in the 1920's when the Tryon Fire Department bought this siren to use for fire calls. Then 50 or 60 years later, this siren was abandoned at its original location because the fire department replaced this siren with pagers and no longer needed this siren. I think I was told the Fire Department moved and the building (where this siren was on) was turned into a hotel or hospital? Then later the building was turned into the police department/Town Hall. Then again the Town decides to take this siren down for refurbishing, cleaning, and it was reinstalled. This siren is now used for tornado warnings, natural disasters, man made disasters, and all other emergencies. The Town only uses the cycles (attack signal) for all the uses of this siren. (This siren never ever sounds steady [alert signal] for any type of these emergencies or tests.)

Awesome video! Really nice to see a town that gave their fire siren a second lease on life like this.

EF1 tornado hit Tryon NC on October 9, 2017 and the siren wasn't sounded leading many to ask what happened. City responded to media questions saying that the NWS never issued a tornado warning for the Tryon area and Polk County NC but a severe thunderstorm with potential for tornado warning instead. That said the city didn't activate it. Tryon is one of those places you least suspect tornadoes since they are wedged against the Blue Ridge Mountains, but you are NEVER immune as a tornado outbreak in April 2011 proved in the NE Georgia mountains with a EF3 in Rabun County as well.

Sarah Beckley listen to the centry 5v and 10v. Happy listening. Dig through my channel for the fire siren videos. That one is a 5v. Gonna get better footage this year of it.

The bearings probably got cold and that's what's causing the slow wind up.
