Be sure to keep a hand held can opener in the crate. Also, save those packages of plastic utensils from take out in the crate .
1st I'd like to thank you for thinking of those who were effected by Ian. Now for the rest... I'm a massive stroke survivor at a young age (1 month from turning 36) in 2013, and now disabled in a wheelchair with right side weakness. I love your channel & videos cos you've given me many ideas on how to make great meals for just myself (I'm single) that can be stretched into many days on a very limited budget (SSI-Disability). Thank You Very Much!!!! 😊💯
Thank you, Mindy, for being such a light to all of us! And thank you for thinking of Florida! I live in central Florida. It was a very harrowing night as the worst part of Ian passed over us around 2am. We received only very minimal damage but many of those south of us lost everything. I can't even imagine what they are going through.
Leslie, I’m so sorry you had to go through that. I have survived a few tornadoes, including one F5, and you’re right. The amount of damage wind and water can do is astounding. I hope your neighbors get all the help they need!
East coast Floridan here (Ormond Beach) and I can attest to Ian being much worse for all of us than they had anticipated… it’s wonderful to see so many outside of Florida that have sent help in one way or another..
Here’s some other ideas:
Canned beef stew with instant potatoes
No bean chili, mixed vegetables, and instant potatoes to make a little shepherds pie.
Dehydrated hash browns with bacon bits (also good with some sort of shelf stable cheese product and wrapped in a tortilla - the flour tortillas at Dollar Tree seem to have a pretty long shelf life).
Mindy, you are amazing with your charitable donations. We Floridians are so thankful for any and all help as Ian just destroyed us!!!
One of my emergency meals is chicken and rice. I use the pkg redi-rice, canned chicken, cream of chicken soup, evaporated milk, small can of peas. Stir together, heat and eat. Very rib sticking meal.
Im near Orlando, our neighbors are greatful for any help! Bless those down south who are really hurting!
I love this idea. And I love the idea of gifting the entire tub to a new mama or someone who is struggling with any life transition. Southern frugal momma here on YT had a great tip to look at all the items and find which one had the soonest expiration date- then write that date on the ziplock so you know when the kit needs to be used by.
Interestingly, I had been using lots of your ideas to build my supplies for a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail and as a result I had a cache of food to take with us when we evacuated Tampa for Ian. So yes, you helped me and my kids. 👍 Thank you!
Single coffee packets would also be beneficial to store with ready made creamer.
Oh, Mindy, Having just gone through Ian in SW Florida, as I was watching, I couldn't help but think of how handy this would have been. Not just for me to use, but to give away to people in need. There were, and still are, so many. This is awesome, and will be on my list for next hurricane season. I do have a lot of home canned meals, and we definitely did not go hungry! One thing I might add to this, is that any meal bags requiring water have an appropriate size bottle included. I know it seems silly, but we had power before water, and then we were on a boil water notice for a week. Also, if you are on a well, no power means no water. Just a thought, so in a hurricane situation, people wouldn't be using up their drinking water to cook. Again, thank you so much! This is a great idea!
Yes, I meant to mention water as well, and I just forgot!
@@SeeMindyMom Talked to Hubby about it, I think before nest hurricane season (June), I am going to do 2. One for us, and one to give away.
Yes, we were also on a boil water notice and a water restriction notice after hurricane ian. Several water main breaks and several people mentioned they had no water pressure plus no power. So having water prepped ahead of time is a good idea!
@@SeeMindyMom I reuse Empty water jugs and fill?freeze them in the big freezer. Helps to fill the space so its more efficient, gives u a little extra time for frozen food if you do loose power and if they do thaw, they can be used as water if your without power for a well or pump.
Thanks for the ideas! I don't even have room for a bin but have 2 backpacks that I can use. Then if we need to leave we can grab it.
Thats such a great idea
I don't use a huge amount of milk so I never had it when I needed it. I started keeping powered milk and it is really working well for me. I can have a latte whenever I want it and it works nicely in cakes and other cooking jobs. And I can always buy fresh milk if I ever need it for any particular reason. Thank you for the video!
Thank you for thinking of Florida Mindy. I live 2 hours north of where Ian came ashore. We're ok just minor damage. But the things that happened, to us, neighbors, and family have left me a bit rattled. Everyone I know came out with their lives so I know how blessed we are. 🙏
I really like the idea of putting these bagged meals in a tote for an evacuation purpose. I suggest to throw in some oatmeal and raisins or granola bars for breakfast ideas.
I made your cheesy tuna noodle dish for supper and my husband and I loved it! I used rotini pasta. Thanks for such a delicious pantry meal idea! ❤
I sent this to my Dad because I know he has good food storage but not a lot of full meals planned with those and he's looking for full meal ideas, and he just said it would be great to give to my brother and his fiance who just moved in together yesterday until they get settled and have been able to do that first big grocery shopping trip. My husband and I will be moving in a couple of months so now I'm gonna add one of these meals to my shopping list each week so we have some easy meals when we first move!
I've also been sending my brother your budget videos as I come across them because I know things will because I know things will be tight for them for a little 😄
I love this type of video
My daughter is allergic to tuna so my son made a casserole using two cans of chicken and cream of chicken soup instead of a tuna noodle casserole it became a chicken noodle casserole and all the kids love it
Great idea! Did he keep the rest of the recipe the same?
Great idea! Did he keep the rest of the recipe the same?
Yes 👍
I bought a cookbook years ago called "It's in the Bag" by Michelle Snow that has a lot of yummy recipes along this line. It's one of the best food storage Ideas in my opinion.
I feel like it would be a nice idea to donate a bunch of these to a food pantry/food bank. I expect people who use their services often end up with an assorted mix of ingredients and then have to figure out what to cook with them, what other ingredients they would need to use them in a recipe, etc. So having a "everything in a bag" meal with instructions would probably make it easier. And of course they could always use the ingredients in other ways too.
Rewatching this at the beginning of a new year. I’m excited to get my ducks in a row! Thanks (again!) Mindy!
I made a lovely version of your tomato soup to make it dairy free. Large tin of crushed tomatoes, onion and garlic powder and coconut milk! It was fabulous. Not quite as easy as yours sadly because I had to blend the soup. Of course you could just have the soup chunky! 🤩
Most of my family live across the border from you in NWAR. I live in MT, so whenever they show me pictures of “all of the snow” they got, it makes me laugh! 😆 NOTHING is canceled up here even when it’s 20 below and there’s 5 feet of snow! We’re prepared for it tho, and you guys are not. Having emergency food is a great idea no matter where you live!
These would also be great to donate for church or school food drives!
Velveeta is shelf stable. I don't use it myself often. But, maybe for this.
These are also just great to make when you have a little extra cash so if you ever have a tough month/income loss you have meals to feed your family. Or to gift to someone in that situation!
Love the inspiration here. I did a riff on the tuna casserole using a package of pre-cooked pasta, cream of chicken soup, and Velveeta.... good deal at grocery outlet. One of the shelf stable dinners that helped make our mini-vacation more affordable!
Best place I've found to buy shelf stable milk is Dollar Tree. Have seen whole, low fat, skim and almond $1.25 for a quart.
I love these ideas. I regularly keep certain things in the pantry for quick impromptu meals but I like the idea of setting things aside that will be there when I need them. Fall is when I concentrate on making sure I am fully stocked for winter so if I can't or don't want to go out, I am prepared.
I love this video!!! We have lots of times when we can't get off our mountain due to weather and we're a 3hr drive to the grocery store so preparedness is key to keeping fed!!🤣🥰🥰🥰
And don't forget a hand can opener or two, just in case of power outage. Saved our 'bacon' a few times here in Moore during a couple of tornado aftermath. Much love from a new subscriber!
Always love your video's. As I'm in uk some of these products we don't have but the basics we will have and like you do I'll adapt my meals to that
I love this video. I'm using most of your ideas. Thanks for all you do.
Tuna casserole - I used Mac and cheese, get the one with the sauce, can cream of mushroom and can of tuna. I like frozen peas added. But for emergencies I would add a can of vegetables on the side.
The last time we had a power outage in winter, we heated up the smoker (we always have lump charcoal year round. Good emergency tip) and cooked as much meat as we could and repackaged and froze it in coolers with snow. We didn’t want to lose so much of our freezer. We still lost ice creams and veggies etc (we couldn’t eat ice cream fast enuf). But the meat was the higher dollar stuff. I had ready made meals for a while after the power came back. We didn’t keep them long term just in case.
I love that you have these ideas. I would hate to need to eat this way all the time but with prices on the rise, some of these ideas would help the budget too. I paid $8 for 18 eggs yesterday. That hurt. Just saying . Thanks again.
I feel your pain! I think most of us do. Prices are Ludacris
Great ideas Mindy! I sometimes add tomato soup to my chili. It gives it a velvety consistency. I will definitely make some kits because I live 50 miles north of Chicago and with winter coming we need to be prepared.
Lori, that's a great tip on the tomato soup. Thanks!
You can also use tomato juice or V-8. Mom always made chili with the home canned tomato juice she always canned.
That's a great idea!
One of my favorite ideas I got from you was taking spaghetti/pasta sauce and added cream or half & half to it to make a tomato soup.... I've never liked tomato soup before, but I like this... Thanks for the idea. .
Great video. Everyone should have a few emergency meals on hand.n you never know what might happen. Where I used to live I'd lose power for days constantly during the winter. Thankfully I had a gas stove and wood stove. I used to keep lots of shelf stable food items. When we'd get a blizzard I used the snow to keep my fridge items cold. I never thought to put them together in a bag and tote. I might need to try that
Thank you Mindy, you're such an inspiration to us. It's so amazing you donating to the hurricane victims. These ideas are wonderful considering I live in Wisconsin where snow storms are a normal thing. Much love from Wisconsin ❤️
Thanks Mindy ! Great suggestions for quick shelf stable meals.
it's also an idea to have a way to heat those (and water) in case you have no way to heat - no electricity or fireplace or gas. A fondue pot with the sterno or candles works wonders to do heating for emergencies like this. And remember -t hose dates don't mean anything - they don't magically expire on that date. They can be good for many many months later, and some years later for canned goods. You can also get shelf-stable milk at DollarTree for less ;)
I bought myself a vintage fondue pot and sterno a few months back. It came in sooo handy. I used it for everything during Ian. We lost electricity for a few days but I still had coffee (instant) and my son had his tea. Also was able to heat up premade hamburgers and other things. Will be buying more sterno because I went thru a lot of it.
Thank you for mentioning the dates. I've had people ignore me when I tell them the date is just an arbitrary date assigned by the manufacturer and many things, like sugar, tea, rice etc. don't expire at all. Many canned goods are still good up to a year or more after that date. It all depends on the condition of the can (dented, rusty) or packaging and the storage conditions. There are websites on the internet that gives information on when things really expire. Also thank you for reminding me about the possibility of no heat source. A gas grill comes in real handy but I never thought about a fondue pot and sterno in case I can't get to the grill.
Great ideas that you have. If these were also intended for a grab and go bag, I would also put in some plastic utensils in the bag or keep some in a separate bag to grab also. Love your channel.
💚
Powdered milk is also a great option for emergency food especially if it's going in cereal the different taste isn't as noticeable.
I am theIn cook, and like you said, fallen ill. My husband, however, is amazing in the kitchen.
We went on a 3 week family backpacking trip and made Kraft macaroni and cheese using powdered coffee creamer or some mayonnaise packets we picked up from McDonald’s!
Love the bin idea.
The longest disruption for a blizzard on my area is also about two weeks. So l also like my pantry to have at least two weeks of food. Kits sounds like a good idea.
Corned beef and Hungry Jack hashbrowns, green beans or veggie of chose could be a meal.
good idea!
For the tuna noodle. I use cheddar cheese soup in place of the velveeta & save $ too
We are down here in Florida! Fortunately we were not in the path of Hurricane Ian when it hit, but we originally thought it was coming for us! These are awesome, just in case! Thank you for all the work you do with your channel!
Glad you are safe! Thanks for watching!
I’m in Lee county and the original video came in handy for us here in Florida!
@@annayager4571 Hope you are all ok!!
Someone suggested putting paper plates & plastic cutlery. How about a non-electric can opener. Also I didn’t see any reference to beverages. I know there’s a formula for how much water 1 person needs in a day. Keeping hydrated is so important. Also if you have a heat source, you could include tea bags, instant coffee, hot cocoa mix or the single serve packets of lemonade etc. This is such a great idea.
Those cereal cups to add just water too have 1$ back o. Ibotta too, I bought a bunch for storage and for my teenagers to just keep in their room for snacks-I know not a popular thing sometimes-but just to keep them from waking the house. They liked them a lot!
Hi there, I have a suggestion concerning the tuna dish. Please go back and use the Mac and Cheese, cook it as directed. Then add the 2 cans of tuna, and the soup. I also add a small can of mushrooms and the fried onions. Also baby peas. However for what you are doing, you don't need the cheese or egg noodles. It would be simpler and have a longer shelf life.
Awesome ideas, thanks for sharing ❤️❤️❤️
Walmart now has the single service cereal bowls with powder milk in them so you only have to add water. I tried one just to see how it was and it was pretty good. They would be a good addition to emergency meals
Great ideas! Always love your videos.
I thought of 2 other things these would be good for. If one of your children was moving into their first apartment. The other would be, if you were renting a cottage &
didn’t want to spend a lot of time or money on meals. There are so many great things these would be good for.
I have a food storage area in a closet and I already have most of these ingredients. The table cream is something that I will have to add. You have some great ideas!
Such great ideas! Thank you!
I was considering an Emergency Meal Plan with winter months (and icy roads) ahead and this is a perfect starting point!
$1 Knorr sides bags
One thing I grabbed for my emergency kit last winter before it hit because here in Texas we lost power for well over a week as well the year before .. but one of the things I grabbed for the kids was a pack of the cereal milk and even a pack or two of the pre-made milk that were just in the little containers. We didn't end up needing them but when our electricity went out I was putting bottles of water and sodas and juices out in the snow to get cold and I figured I could do the same thing with the milk and at least the kids would have access to milk and I wouldn't have to worry about anything spoiling and it would be nice and cold. Plus the cereal milk is a treat and what kid doesn't deserve a treat especially during times where adults are a little stressed you know
Also, ghee (clarified butter) is shelf stable and you can make it yourself. Bon Appetit had a decent article.
And honey, also shelf stable.
Don't forget the can opener!!!
Great ideas! I was think of doing that!saves time when we aren’t looking each day for what to make!
Great video and great ideas!
Thank u from central FL ;) this is great for us with hurricanes.. or just to have in case of whatever..
Ohhhh tuna casserole, that is a childhood favorite my heavenly mother always made. I still do it maybe once a year ;) but my mom added some mixed veggies in hers and it’s good and also never had it with the cream soup 🤔gonna have to try it that way now
Hi Mindy- when our electricity goes out our water also goes out. I’d love some more ideas for shelf stable meals that don’t require any water to make them. I want to keep my water storage for drinking. Thanks.
We make the same tuna casserole, but without the cheese.... maybe add a can of mushrooms, too.
Wonderful thanks
Great ideas for shelf stable meals. I shopped my shelves and put up several last month. I have mine on the bottom of the pantry too!
Taco soup n cheesy chili mac made it in mine, too.
Julia Pacheco has a recent video with five recipes using knorr sides
Thank You for your great videos & donations to help Florida after Hurricane Ian - SW Florida got a lot of damage.
Great ideas 😊
Love these ideas and preparedness videos! Thanks for sharing.
Great ideas, Mindy! Thank you!
On the tuna meal maybe use campbells canned cheese soup or the nacho(??) cheese canned instead of the velveeta. I pass on the velveeta because of price and taste. Love all ur videos and ideas thanks Mindy
I do the walmart brand of velveeta....almost half the price and pretty much the same quality.
I love this I've definitely got to get these together! We've definitely had terrible winter storms when we've been out of power for 24/48 hours and now that we actually have two little ones it opens my eyes to this stuff
Thanks so much for this video and for your time! So helpful
Thank you from a Floridian!! I love your channel and look forward to every video! God Bless you!
Our Dollar Tree has the Armour Chili with no beans for $1.25
Thank you so much , what a great idea.
Aldi Cheese shells are good. Just add a small can of tuna or small can of chicken for a huge meal with your favorite seasonings. Feeds 4. Walmart also has a small can chopped ham. Emergency bag item. Last winter I had to learn real quick how to cook on my fire place. :-)🍜
My Mom had a mock tuna casserole that doesn't use noodles. Cream of chicken soup, tuna, and crushed potato chips. I'm sure the sodium is crazy, but it works! She would top it with some of the chips, also. I still make it sometimes ... super quick and comforting!
Good job!
Great video
Mindy and family have a great day have fun thanks from Oklahoma
You are amazing. Thank you for what you do and you're beautiful heart♥
Thanks, Angela. It’s my pleasure. 😊
Mindy, good options for Velveeta cheese is Campbell's cheese soup, canned cheese, such as nacho cheese or the Velveeta individual cheese packets. And you can steal one from the cheese and shells. Funny story my sister and I were going to mske goulash from leftover chili. I thought we had elbow macaroni. As you may have guessed, we didn't hsve any, so I raised the Kraft Mac and cheese box for its packet if cheese sauce.
Good morning!
Great idea I have a meal kits for my tornado preparation meals I keep in my cellar and I do rotate and I have been know yo give as gifts to
Great job! Thanks for all the information and ideas. Very useful 👌
Glad it was helpful!
Love and appreciate these kinds of videos. I've also seen SouthernFrugalMomma do them, and she writes the meal name and earliest expiration date on the bag, so they're used in time. Yesterday was ugly, but BoOmEr SoOnEr! Thanks for sharing, Mindy!
Loving your content lately...more for IDEAS over exact duplication of what you are doing (mainly because my family and I are vegans). But, keep it up! And thanks a bunch!
Good morning MIndy. What a haul. Everything looks delicious. I believe my favorite item is the Mott's Applesauce. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful Monday. 😊
I love the emergency meal kits box for a lot of reasons! Maybe also consider putting an old pot and a casserole dish and a small pkg of paper plates/utensils in the bottom of the box. That way in emergency situations where a family would have to leave their house quickly, you don't have to remember to grab that stufff, just the tote and go. (edited to add: My sister and her young family were living in a dbl-wide trailer in KS in the '90s right after they got married. My dad was watching news, saw a tornado was about to touch down just a couple miles from their house, called and told her to get out right now! They barely had time to grab the baby, her purse, and get in the car. They came back to find their trailer demolished.)
While there is so much to be grateful for, like the fact that they were able to get out unscathed. The amount of stress that must have put on them as a young family just breaks my heart. To lose your home do to that level of devastation breaks my heart. Thank goodness they were not in there when it happened.
Happy Sunday. Red Cross is another great place to donate to because they have many shelters for people that lost their homes.
Beef jerky's going to make you really thirsty for all the salt. So make sure you have enough water to handle all that stored up. you will go through it very quickly. also you need water in general just to digest your food so you're going to need a lot more than you think. Also also extra can openers extra extra can openers just in case
imagine it's a blackout You've got everything but the can opener running around the house in the dark looking for a can opener... extra can openers! keep one with the extra flashlights. keep another one with the extra batteries. Put another one in a sock drawer. why? cuz you might end up looking there for a can opener. people do weird things when they panic or are stressed out.
That pumpkin spice oat drink is so very good!! Thanks for your video. I'm in North Dallas so very familiar with the snowmageddon 🙁
I'm changing the tunes casserole..either cream of mushroom or cream of celery because I just not into mixing meat.🤦♀️ I'm crazy. No cheese because my mom never but cheese in tuna casserole and im not going to start.
Have you ever looked in the camping section? Frezzer dried camp meals are fun even if pricy...
