Everyone knows you need at least a couple hundred max repels to even progress a mere percent of the plot.
Naa I go there anyway
those damn zubats
Then we complain about not finding shines 😂
Geodude, they’re everywhere
Those dang freakin' zubats
You forgot to include how long it takes for the battle to actually start. Sometimes they have to come in with fancy camera angles to build up the tension or the characters are getting into focus.
yeah that really sucks when they do that.
Lost Odyssey for example was slow to start the battles a bit
And he missed the screen with the Gil and XP rewards. As a bonus: "the enemy dropped an item. Your bag is full
Are you dropping the item? Y/n. Yes, are you SURE? Y/n"
Ans it was even worse with the PAL version. I ended up dropping FFIX because of this
@@shytendeakatamanoir9740 FFIX had the triple whammy. It took a few seconds for the battle to load after the swirl, it had the pointless back and forth camera pan, the game ran at 15 FPS so all the animation was slow and floaty and finally getting out of the battle took a few seconds as well. Every random battle in that game took like 2+ minutes and there were hundreds/thousands of them. I could never finish it until the remasters came out with the speed up option. It was just so tediously slow on PS1.
@@devilmikey00 I played FFIX on the PS4 and without the speed up, the battles are painfully slow.
It's even better when the escape command only works 20% of the time.
And it's even WORSE when you're better off fighting randso because the escape command takes too damn long to take into effect! 😭
or even have an escape command like ff7, need a materia for it
@@Dead_Hitori Pretty sure in Final Fantasy 7, you can hold L/R to run from battles like most other Final Fantasy games from 4 onward.
Sonic Chronicles turns running away into a time consuming mini game that's very easy to fail. Even worse when the enemy runs away and you have no choice but to chase them.
Shin Megami Tensei on Hard Mode be like:
I used to hate when some RPGs would give you an encounter every 2 steps when you just wanna progress in the story. But when you wanna spend some time level grinding, that's when they wanna make the encounters super slow.
Facts
exactly
Or when you're looking for a particular monster to appear. It appears when you don't want it and then when you do it never appears.
What is worse is when the dungeon has a puzzle.
with the terrible camera controls, it's basically just go to point A, pick up some orb and put it in point b
And then you gorget what the fuck you were doing
Wild Arms 3... Puzzles and battling. At least FFX made it that you didn't have to battle when doing the puzzle.
When random encounters still happen while you're doing the puzzle 👁👄👁
Golden Sun days lol!
Random encounters are at their most dreadful when your party is tired and you just need to save the game
Romancing 2 and 3 dont have this issue because your health automatically refills after battle
Especially in Pokémon 😂😂😂
Then you try to escape and keep failing so your party gets wiped right before the save point
Especially when YOUR TIRED irl and u jus wanna go to bed but you already progged so much so you jus gonna push to the save spot😭
it gets even worse when your 4 steps away from that save/recharge point, and the Random spawn is a turtle with a kitchen knife that is immune to most damage and has attack power of Saitama!
Final Fantasy X random encounters were like jump scares to me when I was a kid. That glass break in the forest areas was like Stone Cold making an entrance every time.
The "swoosh" effect in FF7 used to make me jump as a kid because it was so loud
I got to the Oasis. You know how there is a difficulty bump? I can't play it no more. One rando can almost end my whole team. No free mp/hp fountain in sight. Don't even know how to farm. I gave up.
Try playing it's follow up sequel to FFX where it's random encounters added in a surprise gunshot screen change every time a random battle happened.
@@GoddessShadowYT That would've been terrifying if I grew up in a gun toting bad neighborhood.
I never thought about that. I thought it was for chance for grinding more levels and skills
And when the battle ends you forget which way you're facing because the walls looks the same. Then you end up running the opposite direction.
Him moving down to magic before moving back up to attack the first time was hilariously accurate, but I refuse to believe that the third time he wouldn't just be straight mashing A
What the average Pokémon playthrough without repel looks like
Average cave/water area experience
Edit: No Repels
Can confirm, I have never used a single repel

@@theknightwithabadpictotall7639ive played every pokemon game, and 100%'d both black and white twice, and ive never used a repel because i didnt know what they did..
You can take your time and walk or cycle through at top speed. It doesn't matter. Either way Zubat is inevitable.
When you're tired of random encounters... But the FF7 and FFX battle themes are absolute bangers.
True. I used to just sit and let the FFX battle theme play out entirely every single time haha.
Bro forgot man with a machine gun(yes i know it's not the actual battle theme but still)
@@deepflare1028It should've been
@@Michael-hc2hp truth, you could just replace the mp3 file if you're on pc tho

I will always prefer rpgs with the enemies roaming on-screen. Not only does it give you more room to choose if you get into a fight but it also has its own challenge of learning how to avoid the enemies. And it saves you so much time on the fight load-in and load-out alone.
I really like the Persona 5 mechanics where if you can hit them from behind you get preemptive strike.
@@gameskyjumper1721 It's those small little additions that really add to the enjoyment of the product.
@@gameskyjumper1721Yeah, Persona, SMT and Atelier (the PS3 ones and onwards) I think did this a lot
pretty certain both Chrono Cross & Trails of Mana once used that in there RPG games before.
AR Tonelico had an interesting concept for random encounters, each area had a life bar that drained as you defeated random encounters and once it was empty you could walk around freely until you rezoned
The attention of detail to have a winning pose after defeating an enemy every time lol
He always just hits the nail right on the head. Appreciate the OG FF7 music as well.
FF7? Boy that was Last Dream
This soundtrack was used on ffv first.
Wasnt that vagrant story as the background?
Dude I was just playing FF7 (OG) LIKE YESTERDAY
Same. Finally figured out what is up with that aerith praying scene.
Oh god! It was even worst when you realize you may have missed something or made a mistake have to go back and check if you forgot something in order to proceed the plot. So many random encounters 😭
If you look, you can see that he does his Victory pose faster each time due to how impatient he's getting.
Also known as when life hands you too many "L's"
Level Ups
Cilvanis makes "L"monade
Me this summer
wait did someone just mention me?
“Can I progress the f***ing plot!? PLEASE!?”
This. ESPECIALLY when there’s a plot point so major going down that they even change the bgm on the world map, only for it to get interrupted by a random encounter, then glitch out after the battle.
Playing FF7 on Android and being able to turn off random encounters was such a blessing. I don't mind them when I'm progressing through a dungeon or sth, but when I'm lost and looking for some plot-important spot they're insanely enraging.
Playing FF7 on Switch now. Disc 2 spoiler: Oh god you won't believe how slow the submarine moves! I was thinking it moves slow and then realized I had the X3 speed cheat on. Oh my lord.
@@gameskyjumper1721 The remastered versions of 7 and 8 having 2x speed and no encounter options is just a godsend lol
@@gameskyjumper1721Y'know, as a switch user who bought FF7 today, this is some news to me since I'm familiarized with dragon quest,
Now the combat system definitely looks like I'm gonna have trouble understanding with...
It’s worse when you’re trying to replay old RPGs you’ve already beaten 🤣
That's pretty much the only thing stopping me from playing the first two breath of fire games.
Bravely Default has a system that lets you freely control the encounter rate. You can set it to 2x when you need to grind or 0x when you just wanna get somewhere. It's a great system that's not broken because if you're not level enough for the bosses you get bodied, so you have to leave the encounters on at some point. More games should do this imo. There are times we wanna fight but there are times we just want to move forward lmao.
Great vid, keep up the good work
Too bad BD is a shit game
I always appreciated that abt BD. Thats why its the GOAT
Ive never played Bravely Default because I've grown tired of turn based combat as I've grown older, but, this sounds like an awesome mechanic. Being able to turn it off to just adventure or progress the plot, but also turn it to double when you need to grind, is such a game changer. Literally, lol.
@@lexecomplexe4083
Opposite for me, I appreciate slower games the older I am.
I like when game gives me time to focus on anything what I'm doing at any moment.
I honestly just prefer the modern JRPG style where enemies are shown on the field.
It's worse when you have no idea where to go 🤣
Man, vagrant story visuals are so amazing, I recognized instantly!
Yeah, same!
Also, Vagrant Story had no random battles!
@@solarblitzXJust makes it funnier I guess
There should’ve been an alternate ending where he has no encounters and then he’s mad underleveled for the dungeon boss.
I can't believe he deleted something from his PS5 library to make a video. So much dedication to his fans
He probably already intended on deleting something but just took that opportunity to implement it in the video
@@GeometryDashSlowkeyy yeah I thought about it
@@GeometryDashSlowkeyy and it was Final Fantasy
@@ShadowOfMassDestruction It was actually Trek to Yomi
This might look like a simple joke but it isn't an exaggeration
Actually it is though? Random encounters even in the worst of games aren't anywhere near as frequent as in this video.
@@immortalfrieza Take a look at Megaman X Command Mission
@@immortalfriezaThis is blatantly false
@@immortalfrieza No we have spoken your are incorrect
@@immortalfriezalaugh in Final Fantasy 1 Hallway of Giants
Would have been crazy if a random encounter hit right before the game deleted lol
Stuff like this is why I love the Bravely Default series, in the settings you turn encounter rates from -100% to +100%.
the editing is God tier as always!
I knew a random encounter was coming, and laughed even harder
i love how you used Vagrant Story first scene as a background ❤
love to see that game has some recognition
he walks like the original ff7 when he walks. And it makes the video 10x funnier.
Ohhh wow, does this ever bring me back, especially that music.
This actually made me think of a mechanic from Wild Arms 3 wherein you could ignore random encounters. An exclamation mark would appear above your head about 3 seconds before one, and you’d just push a button to ignore it. However, the gauge for it had a limited charge, so once that was empty, it was random encounter galore time.
Think there was a game called "Shadow Madness" that did that as well. It used a monster growl and vibration though so if you had a basic non-analog controller and bad hearing (or didn't want to wake your parents up) it was just as grindy as any other RPG.
I remember that kind of being a thing in Wild Arms 2, though it was a matter of if the enemy was weaker than the party, then you could potentially skip it
Yep and boy oh boy when there were puzzles to solve did that make it even more frustrating.
WA3 is on Xbox Series S|X :3
@@greenhowieShadow Madness is a game i miss. Best random purchase i made in the ps1 era.
Every frame of this sketch is totally relatable
This is why I like how Tales games do it and show monsters on the map you can avoid a lot of the time if you really want.
This is 100% the mood for caves in Pokemon games. I always try to stock up on as many Max Repels (or any kind of repel that's available) as possible before going into a big cave. Like I don't mind catching a few Pokemon here and there.... but after a while it's just monotonous, and it's just Zubats and Geodudes, and I just wanna get to the next fucking town lmao.
That delete from hard drive part. I feel that
Man, this brought up memories of similar shenanigans in a few RPGs I played. But, nothing tops the random encounter experience of just facing a different direction in the spot I'm standing in. That's right! I did not move from the spot, just faced a different direction. And yes, it was a Pokemon game.
There was one game series that did something I really appreciated for random encounters: it had a meter that would empty a little bit with each fight in a zone. Once the meter was empty, there were no more random encounters in that area until you left and came back-allowing you to grind if you wanted to.
Another RPG by the same studio allowed you to wipe out multiple encounters worth of enemies with a sufficiently-charged AOE spell-I kept wiping out every area in one battle. (I hesitate to call it a sequel, though the plot is connected).
The first game was called Ar Tonelico, if you’re curious. The other entry was Ar Nosurge.
I believe Atelier Iris 2 had that "Encounter Gauge." Good if you're just moving, but when you're grinding for exp (or to get the item drops), having to leave the area, then come back was annoying.
@@johnhanzelyjr yeah, at least in Ar Tonelico 1-2, they were 2D JRPGs, so load screens didn’t really take long if you wanted to grind. But when a load screen takes longer, it really adds up.
Though AT didn’t really require much grinding unless you wanted to unlock everything in every reyvateil’s (the spell caster/singer character) cosmosphere (mental world with heavy dating sim/visual novel elements). Regular encounters provided more than enough xp and resources to clear the game.
@@Xenobears I have all three....and love them. You're right.....but when you're a completionist (like me) grinding is mandatory. I believe I was at the final dungeon of the true ending in Ar Tonelico.....but was grinding for money to try to buy all the skill crystals from that one vendor....just to have them all.
“I literally one shotted your crew. What on earth can you do by yourself of all things that your squad couldn’t. You’re literally throwing your lives away 🤦🏾♂️”
FACTS, I'm glad some modern rpgs gives you the option to lessen the encounters
FF8 had the Enc None ability in the OG, where have you been?
I like that there is an item in Octopath Traveller that greatly reduces encounters
@@koganeitouReally? Maybe I'll give that game a second try. 😅
I loved it when they made the encounters physical enemies instead of random because it let you avoid a lot more
@@KevinLeroyGrant true
Pretty much a good majority of the PS1's RPG library right there. The triple whammy is a lot of random battles + slow load times into and out of battles + slow animations which drag trivial fights out.
When you're forty something hours into the game and you just want to progress the narrative, but the game has decided you need to grind
You forgot when you try to escape the battle. It always ends with the prompt "you failed to escape"
I remember one particular time where EVERY. SINGLE. STEP was an enemy encounter inside a cave. Don't remember which game but looking back I realize the Devs were taking the piss, probably.
As for you, are you sure you didn't equip an enemy attract ring?
There's a bit in the first Final Fantasy like that, it's not even a full cave but a loop with no treasure that just spawns Ogre Mages every single step. Total troll.
FF1 ice cave I believe.
That's FF1 for ya
coulda swore ff9 did it.
FF1 has the Hall of Giant's Earth cave that DID that BUT the PIXEL remaster actually REMOVED that and the Peninsula of Power FROM THAT version of FF1.
As a final fantasy player i can relate
Are there no items in the franchise that can reduce random encounters? Like the repels from Pokémon?
@@samyb4566Molulu's charm in FF6
Never seen any other way in any other game to stop them though they might exist.
@@samyb4566there is an ability in FF8 that turns off encounter entirely, but thats about it. The remasters also allow you to turn them off
I had FF6 wild battle theme ptsd playing over and over again in my childhood. Good times.
I don't understand how you can tolerate this.
I love the recurring use of the bunny suit, classic character
Watching this on a PS5 felt like a random encounter lol
This really makes you appreciate series that have enemies moving on the map or make them come out in waves during an encounter. That and enemy repels.
Btw, here is a fun fact. Last Dream is an actual video game made in RPG Maker that was a love letter to the original Final Fantasy. It is an awesome game and I cannot recommend it enough.
wait..... im pretty sure those enemies were from the "when the anime op spoils everything" vid. HE HAS COME BACK, STRONGER THAT EVER
I remember challenging myself in octopath traveler by completing each personal story using only the protagonist of that story........
The bosses were hard but fun
The 'trashmobs' that I had to fight countless encounters with 1 party member were less fun 🗿
Damn, that sounds really challenging.
I was just about to say Octopath.
Great series but my god the encounters feel like a curse after a certain point. In both games.
I really liked in ff8 with the diablos summon, you could learn encounter half, then learn encounter none.
Back in MY day, we didn't just GET story. We had to EARN it by going uphill both ways through a bunch of random encounters that don't even provide that much XP and oh jeez I'm sure fighting a lot of the same lineups over and over again because I got lost a few times and I went on a detour to get a treasure chest and it was just a lousy potion and...Uh...EVERYONE HAS TO SUFFER BECAUSE I DID. YEAH. THAT MAKES SENSE.
I read that in Steven He dad's voice
Whatever you say grandpa
FF VIII's sea platform had this mechanism that would make you face encounters just by trying to move while it was glowing. Years of life lost to stress before realizing what was going on.
This also happen in the pathway to ultima weapon, and most of the monster you encounter is that 2 headed dog that gives you status effects like blind, silent, poison, berserk and confuse
Digital devil saga in a nutshell. Lol. Also I love how you put vagrant story CGI in there with FF music
SMT Nocturne whenever i'm low on chakra drops:
😂😂I remember there was 1 final fantasy game where this 1 stage like every step was a random encounter 😢I have never encountered such rage
Literally me when i've tried to play the 1st Persona game. I couldn't bear this shit, ive just dropped the game. Even though i really wanted to beat all Persona games after i've finished 3, 4 and 5
That how it felt in octopath traveler till you get a certain skill
Guess the bunny boss is determined to get revenge.
Even worse is when you have to back track even just a little for potentially no reason (areas you passed or looking for secrets) and the encounters still happen.
I felt this video on a whole different level 😂
Had to love that in pokemon you didnt even have to move forward. Even turning the sprite 90 degrees would get you into a battle.
I quite suikoden 4 for this exact reason. It was so bad I was in some sewer dungeon, and it was impossible to not go in circles because the battles were so frequent you lost track of where you came from.
I love Suikoden IV, but that encounter rate was just so annoying. Suikoden V too.
Random encounters without a mechanic that disables them until you want them again is really bad.
Ah, The good ol days of JRPG'S that every corner there's an enemy.
The sudden exit to the menu really got me LOL
True true, I always burst into tears of joy when there are finally items where you can minimize or completely disable the random encounters. It's nasty when you have to use potions for it.......
I believe that people don't mind turn based combat or Random Encounters. They just don't like massively frequent encounters with enemies that just drain your resources.
You're right, I don't. I actually think the random encounters in the OG Fallout games were pretty cool because they could be both positive or negative, and it isn't just " what enemy or enemies are you gonna fight this time!?" And turn-based combat can definitely absolutely be fun, especially by exploiting enemy weaknesses and using buffs and debufs to give you and your party an advantage. Combine character customization and player self-expression, along with numerous items to utilize, and you get something very interesting.
This was how most PS1 RPGs are. They can be annoying if it happens frequently
In Action RPGs you just run by and aggro half of the map until you make it into another area or a boss room.
I was waiting for a battle to start during the battle
Kudos on picking the greatest RPG of all time as a reference 💪🏾
But there's not Baten Kaitos reference in the video.
This happened to me once, i quit and never played a turn based game again 😂
Your vids always cheer me up lmfao
I just had PTSD from this. I still can’t believe I had the patience to beat Breath of Fire 2
Love your content keep up the great work
I also love the detail of you being over leveled and one shotting them but the still come😂
I remember that the first Final Fantasy had one section of a cave that was like that. I think the trap rooms in Final Fantasy 2 were also like that, got to the point where I'd say screw it and look up the dungeon maps to avoid those rooms when replaying it until the Switch and PS4/5 ports of the Pixel Remasters came along.
Lichs temple. As soon as you enter there are 4 paths. 1 is an endless monster hallway, 2 are treasures and 1 is the path forward.
@@azinyefantasy4445 Wait the dungeon the Lich is in has that? I knew the cave with the giants had a path like that, but I didn't know about the other one. Either that or I'm getting the dungeons mixed up, I haven't played FF1 in a long time, but all I remember is finding a hallway in a cave that spawned nothing but giants with every step.
This is why I'll always appreciate the Bravely Default series giving you control of the encounter rate.
Ah yes, the Zubats random encounters, this is why i buy a LOT of repels
Holy shit, didn't expect to see Vagrant Story again
Omg those Vagrant Story backgrounds + FF VII music and battle UI. Sir, you just pulled a string in my heart.

"Can I progress the f**king plot?? PLEASE!"
I feel this so hard from 'Enchanted Arms'
Bruh you funny as hell always haha love ur vids man 🔥
Dragon Quest 8 in a nutshell, but with 6x as many enemies
Yeah however The pyramid dungeon in dragon quest 3 was the worst once you grab the cursed powerful weapon you get cursed and get random encountered every one second as you escape along with not able to use your magic 😂
honestly this is why Earthbound doing the "your to strong you just win" mechanic was so revolutionary...and yet its not the standard somehow
As much as I loved that mechanic, it still felt too grindy to me and I couldn't bring myself to finish it
I love you Bravely Default and Bravely Second, I love you encounter rate slider, I love you being able to choose whether to increase encounters to grind or decrease encounters to proceed
The game self inserting "If your not gonna grind before the boss, I shall make you"
The Zubat cave in Pokemon Red and Blue.
Was expecting it to escalate to a random encounter within the random encounter
Basically what I've felt playing FF7, frustration that even with soulikes I've never felt...this was the first and last time I've played the original, I had exams in that period I couldn't waste my time with that game.
I love Wild Arms 1 but good God the random encounter count is insane lol
The soundtrack did enough, I felt the pain 1 second into the video.
Vagrant Story opening zone
A true man of culture ☕️
You didn’t set the “Encountering every step” to off😂😂😂😂😂
I love the ff7 references, the music the battle music the menu every single sound effect it's perfect
This is even worse if there's a surprise boss fight at the end
