Exiled in Australia.. you’ve no idea the homesickness this little video induced … how beautiful is the Tyne on days like this ! Pint & a bag of scratchings looking at that view , can’t beat that .
Agree with the lovely view & area for sure. Unfortunately the the Uk weather is a real downer. As some one who was born in Newcastle and revisits often over the years I love to visit the area but find so much has changed generally in the UK & find Australian life far better personally.
Hi Eddy, I ran the Trent House on Leazes lane for five years 1990-95. The Free Trade, like the Crown Posada, was and continues to be one of the jewels in the crown of Toon pubs. I used to live on Walker road opposite the drive in entrance you'd walk down, turn right and get to the Free Trade. Back then it was owned by a guy called Ted Pie, he also owned 'Mathers' restaurant in old eldon square. We had some momumental staff Christmas parties in the Free Trade. It's wonderful to see how much that area has been revamped. Back in the day there was an ugly broken down warehouse/dead factory behind it and on the bit of green grass behind the outdoor garden, you would see the odd hippie/punk types slashing the poppy heads that grew there, presumably to harvest the 'perfume'. The old Church with the spire you showed, which you can see if you go up walker road into town on the corner, is the one used in one of Sting's movies (evidently not Dune), in which it was portrayed as the epicentre of Polish immigrants in the Toon, but the movie title evades me. Spender i.e., Jimmy Nail was famous for turning a corner on John Dobson street and instantly standing beneath the Free Trade. The Tyne was a place no one ever went to until a guy called Freddie Plater (who used to own the Trent and and the now gone Barley Mow) bought it. I say 'bought/owned' I actually mean purchased the tennancy. After Freddie got it, that was the launch of the modern 'Tyne pub' as we now know it. The Cluny is owned by my dear friend Julian Ive, I gave him his first bar job in the Toon at the Trent, hasn't he done well! Eddy thanks so much for this, you have an avid following in Guangzhou China x
I remember The Tyne pub when it was still called The Ship. This was in the very early '90s when I lived on the Ouseburn end of Walker Road. The pub was divided into two rooms and there was a barman called Eddie who used to have Chinese spare ribs delivered from Shields Road and so, when he served you, your pint glass would have sticky sauce on the outside.
Good choice...the view is even better at night. For best kept beer I would give a shout out to the Tynemouth Lodge. Never had a bad pint in there, lovely clientele and staff.
Nearly 30 years I've been supporting #NUFC all the way from Malaysia. Hopefully before my time is up i can one day visit Newcastle Upon Tyne. Im not a Geordie nor any of my family members r from UK. But i bleed black & white #HWTL
Great video, beautifully framing the Tyne. As an exile living in Devon for 30+years I will be visiting the Toon shortly with my eldest son and will be sure to check out the Free Trade. Always like to pop in to the Crown Posada to re-live the heady Friday night days of the late 70’s early 80’s👍😁
I do some volunteering at the farm in Ouseburn so know the area pretty well. There are so many good pubs and bars... Free Trade and Tyne Bar for the reasons you mentioned which are a stone's throw away from each other, but also the Cumberland Arms which has a lovely oldy worldy feel to it, The Cluny which has live music and great food, Ouseburn Garden which is great in summer and even shows live sport. Then you've also got The Ship, Billy Bootleggers, and Tanners Arms just up Stepney Bank. If you want a good pub crawl without the busy hustle and bustle of the city center then Ouseburn is hard to beat in my opinion!
I have lived in Northumberland for nearly my whole life and been down to Ouseburn and the Tyne bar many times but never Been to the free trade inn will definitely put it on the list for the next pub crawl. got to say for pub atmospheres I love the clock, a little scary seeming when first presented just outside of Grainger market but watched the euros there a couple years ago and it was a blast. Also spots around Ouseburn like the Cluny always have a place in my heart especially for music lovers it outshines anywhere else
@@TheSmithyt The Black Garter 🤔 great bar in fact the manageress and two staff support Manchester teams 🤣🤣🤣 but it's not rough like it was back in the day 👍
The Free Trade is my favourite pub in Newcastle. The Ship at Low Newton is in a fantastic position (especially for walking the dog on the beach along to Dunstanburgh) and the Blue Bell happens to be my favourite pub in York, so I agree with the choices made!
What a lovely place, what a lovely city ⚫⚪ I will be returning to Newcastle again after 2 years of being there for the first time. The best city in the UK for sure... I recommend visiting Newcatle. Big hug from Norwich, I really appreciate your work on UA-cam, showing the beautiful city. I hope to drink a pint there before i return to Norwich.
As a student at Newcastle Uni in the 1960's I lived at the end of Byker Bridge for a year but never visited this pub. I am confused these days when I go in a place and see 'hundreds' of Ales on tap. I usually ask the bar staff which is the most popular. I have lived outside of the UK since 1975 but still watch the toon on TV when I can. I was at SJP when Supermac made his home debut.
Visited Newcastle a few times over the years and managed to watch a few games as well. We love the place it’s vibrant and the locals are really friendly and funny. Would never knock the toon
Cheers for that, just moved up to this brilliant part of the world(Amble) and not really looked round Newcastle yet....that pub looks great for a wander and a beer!
December 7th was a horrible rainy day. About ten of us landed there just after opening and didn’t leave until it was dark outside. Fantastic atmosphere and the beer was spot on. Great video thanks.
I haven’t found a favourite pub in the city centre yet, but I like many of the pubs I’ve visited there. My favourite pub in Tyne & Wear is The Brewery in Whitley Bay. I like their ales and the atmosphere. A traditional pub with a touch of a maritime theme, live sports and not too overcrowded 😊
Great video, love seeing our region showcased like this. What a great part of the country we live in ! Love Ouseburn and the Free Trade. PS Great drone footage !
Great pub, It's a nice place to go around the Ouseburn, nice pubs, Free trade, The Tyne bar, The ship and The Cumberland Arms. I don't how many people have tried it, what is now one my favorite pubs in Newcastle, but it's a little Micro Pub in the old Eldon Square, called The Wobbly Duck. Loads of great cask ales and a nice friendly atmosphere, if anyone hasn't tried it, give it a go. Great Vid Eddy, keep them coming mate.
I can't believe I am from Wallsend and have never been in there. Will nip down one of the next couple of weekends for a cider. Thank you, great video as always.
Great video Eddy and I love the Free Trade Inn. Another excellent pub and the hidden Gem in Newcastle is the Crown Pasada on Dean Street, I think is the 2nd oldest pub in Newcastle, even has a 1940s turn table and they play random LPs a lot of the time.
Absolutely LOVE the Ship Inn - Low Newton. You have to go Eddie. Set right on Embleton Bay, with Dunstansbourgh Castle in the distance. A real gem and lovely crab sarnies!
@ stunning part of the world mate. You can either park not far from the pub on a dead end road. Or I can highly recommend the walk from Craster to Low Newton. About 8 mile out and back 👍🏼
Just been Eddie for a walk along the Quayside then into the Free trades garden for a pint. Surprisingly hot today and what a cracking view love it there always have.
Love the Free Trade Inn best pub in the Toon with a fantastic beer choice and a great atmosphere. You are right that view has to be the best from any pub, brilliant.
When I lived in Newcastle the Free Trade was one of my locals and it is a brilliant pub. Best start to a Saturday in summer back when I lived there in my 20's (15 years ago!) was start off at the Free Trade at around 3PM, head down to The Tyne at around 7 and then kick on from there. Back then The Tyne was my favourite pub in Newcastle as it use to stock a few decent Australian beers which as an Aussie in Newcastle I loved but the Free Trade was a very close second
Before I watched this, The Free Trade Inn was my instant response. They sell my favourite Belgian Trappist beers (bottled) and have the best views of the Tyne anywhere. The Ouseburn is such a great day/night out. Totally agree with the pick.
Fantastic video again Ed. Thoroughly enjoyed it. I love the Free Trade. It truly is a gem and was always my starting point for an Ouseburn pub crawl reaching all the way to the Blue Bell in Jesmond Vale! I've not read all of the comments and seen if this has been discussed, Ed, but are there still plans for a large building on some land down by the river? I remember a lot of noise about it a few years ago now, the pub and general community weren't keen on that view being ruined by a development. Something to do with the planned ferris wheel on the Gateshead side and building a tall building on the Newcastle side to 'balance out the skyline'.
@TynesideLife Thanks for the reply. Hopefully they have scrapped it altogether, it would be such a shame to ruin that view. That said I can understand that piece of land needing to be put to some use! More pubs I say!! 😂
5.8% man! You'll be seeing that view in double vision! I had heard of this pub view before, but had not visited. It's so fortunate that I'll be up in Ouseburn this weekend to check out one or two of the hostelries on offer.
Never been to the Free Trade Inn, it’s on the list for next time. We enjoy people watching at the Tyne Bar. Low Newton is small and gets over crowded like crazy and parking is a mare, great for the beach though. 👍🏻
Looks like a old school pub from back in the day might be a bit odd but i love the door with the black and red paint work that’s typical of old school pubs. As for me not being able to drink i do my socialising in coffee shops now haha but the closest i come to pubs is when i go and see live music. Places like the Cluny etc I am going to Whylam Brewery in May to see Dom Martin an Irish bluesman from Belfast.
Not surprised at all, one of my old haunts. Would have probably put The Tyne above it, but you can’t beat the view from the free trade. Was always easier starting at the free trade then walking downhill to the Tyne Bar than the other way around!
Great place, used to round off the weekend here on a Sunday evening back in the day. (Late 80s 😮) Huffty (anyone remember "them"?)and some of the local actor luvvies used to hang out here. And the photo stories from Viz sometimes came from here. As Eddy says, view from over the Tyne especially a lovely clear sunset, is a wonderful thing to behold.
No surprise to me, been my favourite pub in Newcastle for years. Although hopefully you can get in and get a pint now that it’s been rated in national press…
Only pubs I've been in up there was the wetherspoons not far from you on the quayside on my birthday in 2022 and the strawberry on my birthday last year. The wetherspoons was nothing special but right next to the river and had a good atmosphere. As for the strawberry well do I need to say anything about how special that place is. I do miss walking along the river so will probably be coming up again before the end of the year.
Bit of a put down for the Grey Horse in Consett "would you believe" it won the overall North east pub of the year twice in 2019 and 2024 got into the finals of the overall best pub in the country it has it's own brewery onsite for a great choice of real ales and it's just a fantastic pub!
Good grief 🤪 😂 I was surprised the best pub was in Consett, not because it was the Grey Horse. I’ve never been to the Grey Horse and don’t know anything about the pub. Watch again Lee as it’s very clear what I said. You’re welcome 👍🏻
Drank in ship Inn Low Newton when I was young, at 79, also drank 8n Joiners armscat high Newton, but as a lad from N/Castle, drank in Northumberland Arms just up Northumberland St. That was my local,
Not surprised, the Free Trade Inn is an absolutely belter pub mate. Surprised it surprised you more than anything else! The Ouseburn area in general is brilliant for a drink. I've always been a big fan of the Forth since I was at college years ago, I wonder if its still a canny bar since I have lived away for 14 years now.
Always enjoy your videos Eddy and look forward to further updates on the Sycamore Gap trial. In the meantime on my not infrequent trips down from Edinburgh to Northumberland and Tyneside it's hard to beat The Olde Ship Inn in Seahouses or The Crown Posada in Newcastle
Newcastle looks great with the clear sky. Keswick in the Lake District is the furthest I've been up North. Love the beer with big head up North. Timmy Taylor's , Sam Smiths, Thwaites, Vaux, Moorhouse (Lancs)... . From the archetypal soft Southerner...
The Ship Inn at Low Newton by the sea is a really nice place, it has its own brewery on site and does food. As for Newcastle I like the Bridge Tavern and the Hotspur on Percy Street
I used to go to the FTI in the 90s when the rave people ran it they were called Electric trickery or as I liked to call them Plastic cutlery lol. they had parties in the arches under Biker bridge.
The free trade inn is my favourite, went there a lot as a bairn & now when I return to the toon, i like to stop there to for a drink, there’s nowhere better especially with that view, others I like are the bridge tavern beneath the Tyne Bridge, the ship inn in Ouseburn & I also like the tiniest of pubs the crown posada, although I’ve only been in there the once. Great work with the channel as well Eddy, HWTL⚫️⚪️
Some will disagree, but I think The Botanist is one of the best. The views both inside and out (of Grey's Monument) are spectacular. I've been going there for years. I know Eddy did a video about The Botanist not so long ago. I too enjoy the old pub feel of an old-fashioned pub with a fire. But The Botanist serves gorgeous food and beers/ales and has a wow-factor that cannot be compared.
Always been a cracking boozer, great atmosphere, tasty beers, dog friendly & that view! Took some of Wor friends from doon the country there & they absolutely loved it 👏🏼well done the ‘Free Trade’
Back in the late 60's early 70's my favourite pubs locally were The Maiden Over, in Pelaw, unfortunately a housing estate now, The Cricketers and Albion in Bill Quay, the Albion now a private house and in Newcastle, The Golden Tiger, Imperial and Man in the Moon.......happy days, but no longer living in the UK.
Hi Eddy, some of the pubs I remember when I was young was the Cushy Butterfield, the Pineapple social club and the Grainger pub all in the Elswick area.
Cheers Eddy - we are certainly are blessed with some cracking boozers The Tyne Bar as you said is a quality joint - you get a great pint of Guinness in Rosie’s and I love Red House on the Quayside. The Low Lights Tavern on the fish quay does the best steak pie in the Northeast 🫶🏻
Great pub great view of the Tyne bridge try the station east Gateshead no television but great people and and staff and dog friendly try the silent movie night love the Chanel keep up the good work
Surprised the Pig & Whistle didn't get a mention, met many a classy filly in there back in the day when I still had hair. Not sure if it's still there?
Hi Eddy I haven't been to Newcastle since 1971, but i remember being in a pub called the Viking. The bar was done up as a viking longship and it was a big pub. Just wondering if it is still there?
There's nothing happening at he minute, it's Malmo Quay if you want to check it out. I believe they needed Spiller's Quay development (Whey Aye Wheel) etc to happen to fund Malmo.
one of the few that hasn't been tarted up, an x of mine used to work in the cooperage it was my local after the match but it is now closed and falling down,
Used to like visiting mount pleasant and fellin social club when down visiting family the board up birtley canny bar also 🏴 the buffs was great on the holidays week ends
McEwans best scotch, I used to love that. Is it still brewed, does anyone know. Tynemouth lodge hotel is a cracking bar, but I do like the free trade inn.

Eddie, the Ship Inn at Low Newton is well worth a visit. Fabulous pub and a superb area
I love hanging around Ouseburn too 👊🏻👍🏻
Always enjoy your videos Eddy and look forward to further updates on the Sycamore Gap trial. In the meantime on my not infrequent trips down from Edinburgh to Northumberland and Tyneside it's hard to beat The Olde Ship Inn in Seahouses or The Crown Posada in Newcastle
Brilliant video. Good old Best Scotch.
Have to agree the view along the Tyne really is fantastic. Glad they won... nice one.
Old George for me.. mainly because it is tucked away; and in summer you can sit out and maybe there is a busker playing…
😂
These days I like me Guinniss, but I sure do miss Newcastle Brown Ale, and Vaux's brew.
When I was growing up Newcastle brown ale was nicknamed lunatic soup… ?
@@Maxx-s7d We know it as bottles of dog
The Ship Inn at Low Newton by the sea is a really nice place, it has its own brewery on site and does food. As for Newcastle I like the Bridge Tavern and the Hotspur on Percy Street
I like the Crow's Nest in the Haymarket
Always have a pint in the Crown Posada and the Bridge bar when im in Newcastle.
☝️👊🏻👍🏻
Back in the late 60's early 70's my favourite pubs locally were The Maiden Over, in Pelaw, unfortunately a housing estate now, The Cricketers and Albion in Bill Quay, the Albion now a private house and in Newcastle, The Golden Tiger, Imperial and Man in the Moon.......happy days, but no longer living in the UK.
No surprise. It's the first one that came to mind
When it was actually brewed in Newcastle, it would have been a bottle of Broon, even when it moved to sunderland, but now, I'm t total
We are the Old George fans love this pub
Great pub, Newcastle’s oldest pub ☝️👍🏻
NOTHING BEATS REAL ALE
Love the Free trade, well deserved!
Hi Eddy, some of the pubs I remember when I was young was the Cushy Butterfield, the Pineapple social club and the Grainger pub all in the Elswick area.
Didn't the pineapple club have a bloke on the door selling gumshields.
The Ship Inn at Low Newton is a cracking pub. But Not sure it’s the Best in Northumberland?
I used to like going to the Keel Row at Seaton Deleval too.
I do love the Free Trade, especially on those summer days. It's been for quite a while now but think I may be due a visit.
Definitely Jamie 👍🏻
@TynesideLife catch you there?
The Tyne looks beautiful there, like. And aye I'm being serious.🥰
Just Tyneside pubs then. I’ll give a shout to the Dun Cow in Sunderland near to the Theatre. Went in recently and it was fantastic! 👍🍺
Not sure what you mean by just Tyneside pubs? Never been to the Dun Cow 👍🏻
☝️👊🏻👍🏻
Great pub great view of the Tyne bridge try the station east Gateshead no television but great people and and staff and dog friendly try the silent movie night love the Chanel keep up the good work
Will do Alan 👍🏻
Been to the Ship at Newton excellent pub
Never been in. The views look amazing. Great video.
used to like the split chimp, before it closed. wobbly duck is worth a visit
Surprised the Pig & Whistle didn't get a mention, met many a classy filly in there back in the day when I still had hair. Not sure if it's still there?
😂
I'd love to try that pub next time we come to the UK because I love cider on a hot summers day.
☝️👊🏻👍🏻
The Crown Posada is my favorite.
Hi Eddy I haven't been to Newcastle since 1971, but i remember being in a pub called the Viking. The bar was done up as a viking longship and it was a big pub. Just wondering if it is still there?
I’m not sure I’m aware of it bud, sorry
@@TynesideLife No worries....cheers
Hi Eddy
Are they still going to build flats on the land in front of the Fair Trade Inn, and completely spoil the view, please let us know ?
Good question James. I’m not sure
There's nothing happening at he minute, it's Malmo Quay if you want to check it out. I believe they needed Spiller's Quay development (Whey Aye Wheel) etc to happen to fund Malmo.
There's plans in for some town house's immediately behind the Free Trade , not sure about on the Quay itself
I like The Percy. I saw someone who looked a bit like you there, a month or so ago.
Jason Statham must be filming there 👍🏻😅
one of the few that hasn't been tarted up, an x of mine used to work in the cooperage it was my local after the match but it is now closed and falling down,
Aye, it’s such a shame
Used to like visiting mount pleasant and fellin social club when down visiting family the board up birtley canny bar also 🏴 the buffs was great on the holidays week ends
I used to love watching the ‘turns’ (torns) on a weekend at the Mount Pleasant in Deckham 👊🏻👍🏻
@TynesideLife aye my uncle's front door looked on to it cracking cannae club
McEwans best scotch, I used to love that. Is it still brewed, does anyone know. Tynemouth lodge hotel is a cracking bar, but I do like the free trade inn.
Pelaw Club sell it on draught 😋
Can't beat a Wetherspoons.. Cheap and cheerful
However, the video is about supporting local pubs, not national chains
@@TynesideLife I get that but they're just to expensive for us normal folk.
@@marcclish I’m normal folk too 🤷🏻♂️😃
@@TynesideLife and great content as always.
Eddie, great review didn’t know that Inn existed will pay a visit my long time favourite Bee Hive but get there early as parking can B a problem
Thanks so much! Just want to be sure, how are you sure they don't serve food, 4:14?
I asked. 😅 there are some cold samosas on the bar but that’s it 👍🏻
@TynesideLife thanks so much :)
They do get food vans the odd night doing pizza and other foreign stuff. I believe they're very good.
@@BigKat62 thanks!
'The one you've got to come back for', alas I remember it well mate
☝️👊🏻👍🏻😃
I miss The Ship in The Hole (Wallsend) , sadly no longer there and the Free Trade isn't a patch on what it was 40 years ago
Dare you to ask for a pint of Boddingtons in the Free Trade. They'd drop kick you into the Tyne 😂
Probably 😂
I’m not a pub enjoyer but the Crown Posada is brilliant.
