You know I was watching the 2021 Olympia again and Lee was commentating and he said something that every bodybuilder today should follow. He said if you can't flex it don't carry it. What he meant by that was when he was bodybuilding he never went more than 20lbs over his contest weight. He didn't understand why these guys today get 50lbs heavier than their stage weight. I guarantee that's the difference with the conditioning between then and now.

Dorian should have not placed any higher than 5th in this show. He was too blocky in 91 and his back was not that good yet. He improved his lines in 92.
Lee Haney, such class in his presentation. Two classic Old School Bodybuilding awards. He is a master of transitions from one pose into another, with each pose worthy of being a wall poster. Secondly, he is matching the more dramatic poses to the more dramatic moments of his musical selection. How the art has devolved into a bunch of low muscle control, bloated bodies, strutting around the stage like pimps. All begging for applause with their silly ear wave gestures.
Probably the best posing routine I’ve ever seen at the Mr. O, Haney did an absolutely blinding physique presentation. It’s clear to me nobody before or since has matched Haney as the candidate with the total package, GOAT.
I know people like to pretend Dorian was close but in 91 he really wasn’t. Lee beats him everywhere except legs and Lee had solid legs. Just look at the rear and side shots. Lee is smoking him. That said, Dorian improved considerably over the next couple of years. I think Lee would have won 92 but he’d need to improve himself to beat 93 Dorian. But he was just 31y/o so no reason to think he couldn’t. 1993 Olympia with Lee, Dorian and Flex would have been incredible
I totally agree! For all the criticisms of Lee's biceps and legs..they were simply adequate enough for him to win. A couple of years he came in flat and his legs looked stringy but in 1987 and 1991 he came in full and they looked better.Dorian never had Haney's pec thickness or delts.
Lee was the only competitor I remember finishing his career with a string of wins in a show with a stronger physique than the first time he won it. Arnold didn't do it, Ronnie didn't do it, Phil didn't do it. Everyone else faded, but not Lee. He was a true champion.
I remember this one in my hey day I was fully body building then ,this was Dorian’s introduction into Olympia on his first go against Lee Haney who looked phenomenal flawless and it was a defining moment and passing of the torch when Dorian blew the whole competition away bigger and thicker denser.Two of my all time greats Hands down.
Perfect oiling with zero dry spots. Maybe they knew better in 1991 than we do today where even Olympia level competitors come with "not enough oil" spots onstage! Great physique, great stage presentation with both drama and power!
The first person I've seen on a magazine was Lee hayney. Years later I must say Arnold, Coleman, Phil and cutler are my favorite. If I had to pick one it would be jay cutler. Beast on stage and seem like a totally nice guy.

Haney was dwarfing yates in some shots. From the side and back especially and his chest insertions are just ridiculous from the front. Dorian wasn't as big as Haney until 1993. I mean look at the rear lat spread, Dorian is dwarfed in his best pose. Hence the start of the mass monster era in 1993. A guy as big as Lee Haney, but without the shape of Lee Haney. Dorian is the least aesthetic guy on this stage and he eventually beat everyone else on sheer size and conditioning. He has the worst muscle shape by far. In that regard, he did end the aesthetics era. The guys in the 80's IMO are peak aesthetics. Lee Labrada, Sean Ray, Francis Benfatto, Samir Bannout, Vince Taylor, Bob Paris, Mohamed Makkawy, I could keep going, but you get the idea. Ronnie had round muscle bellies more like Flex Wheeler or Shawn Ray, etc, but he also had a big ribcage and frame/height and put on even more mass than Dorian did to boot. His legs hit all new levels of freaky as did his overall upper body mass. He has the same ridiculous chest/ribcage torso that Lee Haney had. I find it fitting that they both have 8 Mr. O's.

You can't ignore the fact that this was Dorian's debut at the Olympia. Only room to grow from 91 forward. Haney certainly saw him as a threat and that may have pushed him towards retirement. I don't think Haney would've won against Dorian in 92 (in 93 he would've been completely dominated by Dorian).

During his reign the only guys that could push Lee size wise were Mike Christian and Gary Styrdom who both had huge flaws (Christian weak legs, Strydom no back). Yates was the first guy that comparable size and structure without huge weaknesses. True though, his 91 physique isn’t great by modern standards. Interestingly his FLS looks amazing despite his lats not being particularly wide. He was always a master of that pose.
I dunno, to me Vince Taylor deserved the 2nd place. Dorian maybe 3rd (Lee Labrada was superb, only his back wasn't spectacular). Lee Haney definitely was 1st, no doubt. The greatest Mr. Olympia ever. Far better than Ronnie. Lee has the most pleasing to the eyes physique and he has the same no. of Mr. O as Ronnie. But he lives healthier than him. Ronnie looks like he is older than Arnold now.
