I played guitar in a band for whom a minor chord was a giant challenge. I used add2 and 4ths constantly to build their sound because they could be layered onto their major and barre chords with little risk. It gave us a whole new sound, eventually working its way into the band’s writing.
That is a really interesting story actually and bears a lot of exploring, how you can add to existing simple chords without fear of it interfering like you say. Thanks for sharing
Im a guitarist and guitar music composer and I really enjoyed your explanation about why we like the tension of the imperfections of life abstracted in music. I had similar thoughts about the many minor 2 and 9 chords in Flamenco. Nice to find someone with similar thoughts. Thank you for sharing.
Your videos are invaluable. You are peerless in the music theory/ songwriting community on youtube. You look at things from really interesting angles that nobody else is seeing. Your videos are getting better by the week. Thanks so much for your efforts.
Thank you so much for those amazing, heart-warming compliments. My goal is to have the type of effect you are describing and I am so glad to see you are enjoying the content. I would love to see you come join my Patreon (High Castle Conservatory) if you aren't already. Thanks again and stay tuned for more lessons..!
Led here by SD facebook group. Great video and like your musical musings. As someone who is still trying to get his head around jazz harmony this is very useful for me. Also - great singing voice.
I liked the video. May I suggest that in the start of the vid there is some aimless scrolling that could be cleaned up along with the mouse dancing around a bit too much? I have some experience, so see what you think. Content was terrific.
Loved the G add 2 / A add 2 thing. It's little things like this that make me reach for my guitar. Edit: Turns out that add 2 is kind of tricky on the guitar. Nines are way easier. Maybe there's a tuning that could facilitate add 2s? Also, stacked fourths is basically the standard guitar tuning EADGBE. :)
Very informative video. Edgar Winter put out an album called jazzin the blues. The song keys to the kingdom off that album really had me scratching my head as far as the chords being used. Check it out if you get a chance. Thanks for your expertise!

I'm laughing hearing you play around with these chords, hearing almost every Steely Dan song in them!
Very interesting and informative video.
You keep talking about stacks of fourths... I'm so tempted to comment "so what"!
Haha! You gotta be hip to get that one! Most others would miss it by Miles!

Did Tim get these? (I had to think a little - we Southern men have to keep our heads)
Your analysis plus Steely Dan equals heaven.

Huge Brian Wilson fan! Love '60s garage and surf bands. Even I wrote a song with a G add 2/B thanks to Tim!
Great explanation. I’d appreciate any more you can do like this one. Love the analysis.
Great video / lesson! Thanks 👌

Another great video Tim, thanks!

May the fourths be with you...
Nice voice!
The verses in Southern Man (Neil Young) repeat mi11- mi 7 (although I suspect he didn't conceive it that way).

My understanding is that in the Mu the 2nd and 3rd are to be a cluster
Close to You Bacharach.

plagal= 4 1 cadence
5 to 1 is a perfect authentic cadence
