I did the south loop about 5 years ago wearing 8lbs. steel toe boots and a 35lb pack load. This was my "kit" for 20 +years and no blisters. I now have a 20lb pack load and trail runners and will be 56 soon. Good you shook the Shawnee curse.
Chafing is the worst. 2nd to last hike I did, I chafed so bad my thighs bled. Last hike I wore a pair of base layer long shorts, and they worked great. No chafing at all.
I remember your video with all the ticks and said I would never go to Shawnee! Glad to see this video and know there is still hope. Now I'm saying I will never go up that hill!! 😎😎 Nice job!
A First Need filter cartridge configured into a squeeze system will add 1/2 lb. to your base weight, but the filter removes organic chemicals, pesticides, and kills viruses. Bulky, too. I am currently using a Sawyer Squeeze, like everyone else, but haven't run into really nasty water since switching from the much heavier First Need, which makes swamp water taste like distilled water. Nice hike except for the chafing. Going from 0-100 from idle is bound to put a hitch in your giddyup. New sub. Old New England dude. AT section hiker 1982 - next year (maybe).
Awesome overnight trip. Good that you had a better trip then the last one. I did the same thing to a pair of frog troggs and I'm a fan. In PA they have hiking listed as good with practicing distancing so we have been able to still use trails.
Hello Bryce, it's always good to see you out there on the trail. It looks like you were having too much fun on this sojourn. Take care of those knees. All the best of good things for you and your family, stay healthy. 🤗
Bryce - years ago I developed bad knee pain after a lengthy running career. I tried many different insoles, exercises, stretches, physical therapy. I ended up going to a Podiatrist (foot doctor). He diagnosed biomechanical issues (bowlegged, one leg shorter than the other slightly). He tested me for gait position in various ways, resulting in custom orthotics (canted to adjust for my leg discrepancies such that my feet would not over-pronate on my stride and transmit excess torque to my knee). Cost me a little under $400.00, but saved me a lot of agony. Wanted to give you this piece of info to store away in your head, something to perhaps consider in case things do not improve. Enjoy your videos, keep traveling !
that's funny you say that. because I learned years ago that one of my legs is shorter than the other. it has caused problems in the past but isn't too bad. appreciate the tips!
Well done sir! Couldn't agree more about getting out right now as long as precautions and avoid people why not. Looking forward to trying out that park here soon.
Man Bryce....idk how you did this one. Just got back from Shawnee last weekend and I did the southern loop in an overnighter, it whooped me. Even added a few miles going the wrong way on one of the bridle trails. Kuddos man, 20+ miles in a day at Shawnee is no joke. Also, watched the live stream with The Schill Brothers last year on my way down, made the drive so much better.
Sweet revenge with Shawnee!! Great job man! I’m considering taking on Shawnee as a one day challenge myself if I can ever get this planter fasciitis to heal up. I had the same foaming sudds come from my shoes when I was there...so bizarre!!
haha! yea it was definitely soap!.. I definitely want to do it in a day.. FKT is little over 10 hours I think. Right now im letting my calf heal though, trying to take a break from running for a week or two (trying!). I did 2 marathons back to back and never took a break. its catching up
i dont mean to be off topic but does anyone know a method to get back into an instagram account..? I was stupid forgot my account password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me!
@Graham Ben thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site on google and Im in the hacking process now. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
I used to have some chafing problems when hiking, since then I keep a small amount of hydrocortisone cream (the smooth white kind not the sticky clear kind) in my first aid kit just in case it happens again. It works reliably.
Slippery... forgot to lock your truck ... out of breath... super shaky camera ... sound felt out ... no water 💦... your knees are not in shape ... a good start for an awesome video 🤣 ... I love the soundtrack you used while you set up your tent 🏕 ... soap 🧼 in your shoes ?!🤣 ... Nice video Bryce 👍😉
Just found your videos. Nice. The red pump you just push down on. I learned the hard way on a north loop training run after they put them in. I lived down there for 7 years and there is a pack of "large wolf dogs" the locals told me about when I first moved there. I thought they were nuts until I saw them near Pond Lick. Now you have your 100 in check out Shawnee 50 miler next year. Butt kicker. (Congrats BTW)
you probably know this, but the filter doesn't filter out taste. so if the water tastes funky the filter won't change it. I suppose if the filter is moldy that might make a difference though
I'm localish and still haven't done the north and south loop. My first backpacking trip was gonna be there and i quickly realized i wasn't ready when it stormed and i had to bail
Thanks for sharing. A lot of us are climbing the walls waiting for the coast to clear so we can get out. You are lucky the state forests in Ohio are still open for backpacking. Backcountry campsites in Massachusetts are shut down. By the way, your tent looked pretty slick. Have you done a review on that yet?
I take a small tube of zinc-based nappy cream. In Australia it's branded Sudocream, but I'm sure other brands would be good too. Works a charm every time. Soothes, gives a protective barrier, and the zinc speeds up healing overnight.
Did one of the harder ones in central CA a few weeks ago, dropping video tomorrow. 12 in and 12 out 6k' - nothing like your distance dang. I spent too much time recording haha. Good on ya! Oh my gosh my Frogg togg pants make me look like an elephant wearing shorts are a great idea!
Yes, nice work Bryce! Around 25 minutes in, you mention a running adventure. I am not quite there yet to think about a 40 mile run. But, I believe I am going to buy a Salomon Hydration vest- probably the 12 set. Then my plan is to ramp up to do Archers Fork and Scenic River/Greedwood as run/hike trips. Maybe do a UL tarp if I overnight it. Anyway, that is my aim with the running game.
RE: the shorts - I use the Coaltree trailhead shorts for most everything - I wouldn't call them waterproof (I think they do, lol), but they do shed water quite well...
I live in the Shawnee area and I use the area a lot for , cycling , hiking , backpacking . When I was a kid Shawnee was mostly all single track trail and had a really remote feeling. Now with the recent popularity of backpacking I wish everyone could experience the old trail system. I do a lot of off trail exploring in Shawnee because I’m disgusted with the new widening of the trail.
I was just there two weeks ago! One of my favorites in Ohio. Shawnee and Archers Fork, I would not trust any of the creek water though, lots of old coal mining activity everywhere in Ohio.
that's true about the water. I try not to drink it anywhere in ohio but never really looked into Shawnee.. makes sense that it would be the same though.
This is one of the responsible ways to backpack during the COVID-19 pandemic. You are not having to resupply, so your contact with other people is very limited. Thru-hiking right now, on the other hand, is not responsible because it involves too many re-supplies.
So many plans! I wanted to do the Smokies in the spring and fall this year too. The Whites are on my list, but I have to condition myself for the Pemi and Presidentials. Those trails look brutal!!!
Nice little challenge you got going there for your self Sorry about the water pump not working ☹️ Don't forget to take it easy because of your knee Just try to keep it about 3 miles an hour and you should be just fine for your 40 Mile challenge
We posted a video of our 23 miles at Shawnee two months ago, we did the day loop first then the north loop all on day one. We planned do then do the south loop the next day but our legs weren’t having it...;). Those uphills kept us to about 2miles an hour, they are killer!! I think we should have skipped the day loop and we might have made it!
Nice job! I wish I had done it as an overnight in early spring instead of in early fall during spiderweb hell season! Also, look at all those views! I knew knew that place would be beautiful without all the foliage!
Oh yea man you picked the wrong season. lol.. I had everything in my favor on this trip. I actually got sunburned on the 2nd day instead of hiking in rain like I expected. I'll never go there in spider season again. haha
haha!! I noticed when I got home that there is mountain bike trails right by the trail head... I definitely would have been up for that if I had a bike!
HELL of a video dude..DIGGING THE RAIN SHORTS..i use frogg toggs pants in hard rain, they are baggy AF...atleast you are out there and enjoying nature...well done sir
You could try sanitizing the filter: Add one cap of chlorine bleach to one quart of clean water, backwash it as usual, and sit it out to dry. See if that helps.
I just hiked the North Loop...all of the water spickets worked fine... there is no handle .you have to push down on the head and water comes out.....also we did not filter the water and it tasted very good......they actually carry water and fill the wells so maybe we got a fresh load...? They show ever camp site with a privy...which is a joke ...they are all in deplorable condition....i wouldnt even walk in one to take a leak...broken down and bug infested.........the trail was in good shape...great training trail....lots of elevation plus steep....only one set of switchbacks and they were steep too.....just thot I would share if anyone is currently wanting to hike this........all around it was good...I want to do the South Loop soon......thanks for the videos...!!!!
I've run 50 and 100 mile runs. Very doable as a run, but station food/water in about 3 places. Bring a phone or InReach. Stuff happens. Wish I could still run those distances. Shawnee was one of my goals...fat and arthritis suck! Through in age as a weak excuse.
I thought I might be the only one who wears his race shirts as hiking shirts, 👍🏽 quick drying and light wt...Nice video, and yes that’s soap happen to me during a training run with my shorts and I was like what the #%#%^ then realized issues with rinse cycle or I just added too much soap when I washed my clothing.
oh heck yea man, those shirts are the best. pretty much all I wear. Even off trail all I wear are the cotton ones! And yes it was definitely soap. haha
As always, awesome video man. I’ve noticed that you use an alcohol stove in pretty much all your videos. Pitch me on it. I really just need a tiny nudge and I might convert :)

You get good at measuring it out too.. I bring exactly what I need most of the time. If your with friends and everyone has a canister stove you feel left out waiting on your water to boil... but if your solo, who cares if it takes an extra minute to boil!
lol!!! love it. funny thing is this trail had grades comparable to the South Sister climb I did in Oregon. hey any trail can be hard when they don't put in switchbacks! haha...
Thanks for the share of your journey. It's good to see someone else from Ohio

So true about the mountain house meals... Never better than after a good long day! Thnx for the video!
Hike hard! Be safe! Love life! ✌
The illustrious ghost wolf dogs of the haunted site #4 🤣 Great hike and opportunity for extreme social distancing.
Great that you conquered Shawnee! Nice overnight trip!
Hey Bryce, glad you gave Shawnee another shot. I grew up in that area and know that forest well. Glad it went well for you, thanks for filming!
Just what the doctor ordered.
Much YES sir!
Thank you for uploading Bryce. Well done!

I believe the Schill Bros or someone else had also mentioned strange noises in that park, I am not sure if they were Campsite 4 specific tho.
I didn’t realize Ohio had a trail like that. Might need to add that to my circuit this year. Shawnee, RRG, Smoky Mtns?
It's a Southwest Ohio gem.
thats a good line up... Im ready to hit up the smokies
So many plans! I wanted to do the Smokies in the spring and fall this year too. The Whites are on my list, but I have to condition myself for the Pemi and Presidentials. Those trails look brutal!!!

pretty sure its still open

haha.. Its almost all gone! I have tons of other meals that will last me awhile once my rice supply diminishes
Drink every time Bryce talks about his knee.
What are you wearing for tick protection??? Thanks!
Nothing on this trip. In August it would be a different story. I do soak all of my clothes in Permethrin every year though.
