    Such a pleasure to have you, with your usual cheerfulness, patience and enthusiasm, continuing to give these lessons, during these tough times. Recently turned 70, just over a year in to learning guitar on my own, and this has been such a help. Am, finally, making real progress, despite frustrations (mainly fingers not doing what I want them to do), by sticking with practice, and not rushing things. We have time! Being a folk music fan who wants to play my favourites this finger style is important, and this lesson makes a great start as a solid basic foundation. With many thanks and much appreciation.

      I'm 71 and have the same problem keith does. Wayward fingers but guess it's all down to practice and muscle memory. Problem is the old memory, brain and muscle ain't what it used to be but I'm not giving up.
      Also into folk/ country so enjoyed the fingerpicking introduction .

    • @keithrisk5476
      @keithrisk5476 3 роки тому +1

      @@mnphilip Very difficult! Still not mastered. I know it's about practice and patience, developing muscles and memory, but my fingers don't want to get into the right shape on guitar to make barre chords work. Despite Justin's excellent lessons and advice. At the moment I use alternatives to barre chords, to keep enjoyment going, while making regular attempts to have another go at barre chords. Progress is slow, but as with other areas of playing, there is progress!

    That you understand beginners far more than the vast majority of internet / YT teachers has never been exemplified better than in this video. I have been learning with you for a couple of years and couldn’t be happier with my progress. But recently I decided to go off piste and look at some ‘beginners’ finger-style videos on YT (because it had’t come up in your course yet). I found those videos very discouraging, and not just because they all feature good-looking French guys. Eg using obscure chords and difficult chord changes in the first ten minutes when I hadn’t even begun to get familiar with PIMA. So, I came home to you and I am happy again… You are the best (and yes, Tommy Emmanuel is the other best!)

    Thanks, Justin for your awesome and FREE tutorials! I learned whatever I know today from them. I am beginning to learn fingerstyle now and had a question. I wish to play songs with the ability to switch between pick-strumming and fingerstyle and I don't want to rely on some less-common things like a thumb pick, since it may not be available everywhere (in that moment). 2 main recommendations I've come across while researching are:
    1. Using thumb + 1st finger with the pick for the 3 bass strings and fingers 2,3,4 for the last 3 strings.
    2. Holding pick between finger 1 & 2 and learn to switch back and forth (as in Rhett Shull's Fingerpicking tips on youtube. I'm not allowed to post links here it seems)
    It would be helpful if you or anyone experienced in the community could recommend which way to practice.

    I totally get it now what he means by ''you kinda gotta feel it'' when he's talking about picking the strings.
    I spent a few hours on 'Romanza' and its a very basic fingerpicking pattern but in the beginning youre still very conscious about it especially when changing chords and things get mixed up. But there's this breakthrough that just happens out of nowhere where youre not picking the strings anymore and your fingers just kinda wave over the strings. There's no pressure anymore and it just waves over it with the softest touch. It's such an amazing feeling to have!

    tbh I think the littlefinger anchor thing probably just depends on your hand shape/ finger sizes. When I tried to "self teach" fingerstyle (bumbled my way through elliott smith guitarpro tabs)- I naturally/unconsciously did the little finger anchor, I actually assumed it was a bad thing since I figured more complicated fingerstyle songs would need the little finger to be ready to pluck strings - I just find it naturally comfortable and I don't think there's any technical advantage aside from it just being naturally comfortable for certain people.

  • @tynesidebadmintoncentre4752
    @tynesidebadmintoncentre4752 3 роки тому

    I started fingerstyle trying to anchor my little finger but found it really tense and awkward, so started playing without the anchor and eventually made some progress. Tonight for some reason when back to trying anchoring and for some reason it felt much more comfortable than before. Townes van Zandt here we come!

    Awesome videos and they were highly recommended. I have never played guitar but I want to learn. I'm musically inclined and have played Sax and the harmonica, but I want to get into guitar so I can sing as well. Mostly for campfire jamming with my kids. When I think about learning guitar, I think about the scene from August Rush where he plays a percussive fingerstyle tune and that's how I see the outcome of learning guitar. However, idk where to start. Do I need to start with regular pick style or can I learn using finger style from the beginning and add percussion once I get a handle on it? Do you have a thread on fingerstyle for beginners that would start me from the very basics?

    Appreciating your comments about playing in different places along the strings for tonal variety. I've been developing this skill since I'm mostly using my Gibson Les Paul Junior Tribute DC these days (weren't these originally intended for beginners and students anyway?). Who needs a neck pickup? 😂And of course as you say, the technique sits very nicely on an electric guitar. One day I'll get an acoustic guitar. One day.

      I got a pretty nice one at a pawn shop for $80. It was nearly brand-new. Sure it only sold for 120 we're so brand new. But it's a great backup guitar to have on hand to take with me.

    Hey Justin! I have a question. What camera are you using to film your videos, and what mic are you using?

    Nice video. May I refer you to one of the greatest electric guitarists in modern times, Mark Knopfler of "Dire Straits." He uses finger-style. (Money for Nothing, Brothers in Arms, Sultans of Swing, just to mention a few great songs).

    Come to think of it, a G chord in this pattern is really a Gno5; you've got 3 strings on G and one on B. Still functions as a G, though. Or, if you do your "big G" chord with the 3rd fret of the B string, you lose your only B and get a G power chord.
