Damn, I wish my computer had that kind of CPU...
try using the stock EQs of your DAW. They usually don't use much cpu.

JasonJordan That really depends on how many you're using. I personally use quite the amount of EQs, when I try out stuff. I tried to test my CPU, a couple of months ago with and it got so intense for it, that the sound began to distort... and I have an i9 7900x liquidcooled by a H115i from Corsair. But even for a computer, with a mediocre CPU in it, it's going be really intense when you want to try stuff out and get creative. Trust me. :)

Which headphones do you recommend for producing on travel? I have a big problem to find good headphones that can catch up the dynamics of my tracks while I'm producing and hear the final mix.
I mean, it's a big difference hearing the track on monitors than headphones in the end when the track is starting to become complete.

Love your vlogs Luke. My first question is this. If mixing and mastering a track in Stereo is so risky, why have the option? Secondly do you know of any producers that don’t master any of their own music? ie are there any that you know of that will literally throw a gang of samples together that sound fairly good and just get someone else to do all the mastering? 😬😉✌️

In most studio videos i didnt know if they had a sub.

Luke, from an aspiring producer, I have a question about your peek analyzer i saw. It was hitting the red and i bring in a suggestion someone told me while DJing was not to hit the read in the peak analyzer while playing. How comes you didnt pay that attention? Is that something we need not worry about? Pardon the elementary question and theory as I am new to this.

I have seen you in a video with a guy that cant help himself not to laugh when you explained him all about your gears, how you manage to do your mixing, mastering in the box, whole spiel about your music, I think Its been almost 11 years. you were keeping everything very simple, basic. after all these years you re still the same. I think you re the living example of the phrase ''less is more'' .

hey Luke, thanks for the insights. here's a question: are saturation/distortion plug-ins important to you? how do you use them?
Depends on the genre, I would imagine as a house producer he doesn't use very much distortion if any at all. Maybe very slight distortion on sub bass to bring it out more. Also in this video he uses Izotope Ozone's harmonic exciter which is a type of minor distortion.
What's the real name of that spectrum analyzer ?

T - Racks CS metering
If you put your reverb on a bus is it better to use it 100% wet? In my opinion if it's dry the volume level is to high. Am I missing something? Thanks!

Yes it should. Unless you’re lazy. I’m assuming he does this because he’s on the road most of the time and doesn’t have time to properly produce/mix stuff. Just jam it all into a limiter man, you’ll be rich

1st - how do you deal with the CPU on ableton? when i have too much my CPU goes up to 100% . i have to freeze everything or make a wav file out of it and thats something i really dont ike at all.
2nd- where do i get the tracks3 plugins? only get some weird websites when im searching them
3rd - when i have a limiter or something on my master (lets say premaster cuz i will do it like you now) doesnt it effect many other leads/basses etc. because i dont have the dynamic anymore like when i turn that off
4th - i spliced "stepping to the beat" and notice (i dont have all plugins) that even in the premaster the master channel goes like +9db - how to get it to 0 without a limiter?

A lot of producers will take the track and once it’s sounding about 90% done will bounce to audio so that you don’t have so much processor taken up, but will then take up more ram. Sometimes you gotta work with what you got or get a better rig. As for your limiter, you gotta be gentle otherwise you squash your sound too much.

If you send a track to a bus and you add a reverb and a side chain compressor you will still be side chaining the original source sound won't you? What did you mean by side chaining only the reverb?

How come he boost the kick at 50 hz, and also the bass around that , and not cut it. I always thought that there should be space for the bass, when boosting a kick
due to compression, the kick can be lost in the mix and the kick needs to be present. my teacher is a mastering engineer and he told me this dirty secret. he said many people do the kick boosting to make it present and if the bass needs to be more present, a boost is good. i usually use bells and notches but some people do low shelf and other techniques. a baxandall filter is highly recommended.
Why mono? When dealing with mono I have noticed that the sounds fight for sound space. Then whatever is louder is heard and what is not spread out on the stereo mix is quiet. Are there any articles/video to read or watch?
If a club or other system is in mono and a track is stereo, will it cancel out the other sounds? Which channel does it pick? What about 5.1 surround sound and other types of mix-downs? Or do you mean to do as much as possible in mono and then switch it to stereo at the end?
ok, if your sounds are fighting in mono, they're also probably fighting in stereo, it's just that you don't notice it. THAT'S precisely why you switch to mono to check. If the sounds lose force, it's probably as you said, phasing problems. try not to pan excessivelly or make the sounds too stereo separated.
doing it in mono means you have to go between mono and stereo to check, but mono being the base. A mix that sounds good in mono will sound good in stereo, but that can be not true otherwise, and I'm sure it also applies to surround systems. just go back and forth for refference. mixing in mono doesn't mean you can't pan or stereorize things.
ps: there are meters and tools you can use to check if your mix is having phase problems, you can search it.
Would making each sound mono be part of this mixing process? E.G. On the timeline, each track or sound is made into mono?
No, just the whole mix for correction purposes. It's not that you create everything in mono and then stereorize it, is just that you check if the sound works in mono, but yes you can check sound by sound just to see if it has phase problems

So what happens with bad mono mixes that sound good in stereo that are played in mono-club systems? They have phase problems? That would be a problem for a dj. I think a lot of songs could have this problem (?).

but if you eq on your master it will mess up the phase information in your track. do you use linear phase eq??

It could potentially mess up the phase but it would be less of a problem; I doubt the change would be audible because there's onle 1 sound source. Whereas for instance doing non linear phase EQ on a couple of seperate tracks containing recordings of mics recording a vocal or drummer or whatever; that would be very audible because there's a phase relation between the different recordings / mics. Mess up that phase bad enough and you even have the risk of mics cancelling each other out for the most part. If you use non-linear phase on 1 sound source however; depending on what you do of course, the phase change will have way less of an impact. Also, mastering should be about making very small changes and with regard to EQ; a 48db per octave high pass at 200 Hz creates way more phase change than a small Q bell of +0,5 dB at 200 Hz. But you're way less likely to use the first during mastering. Well at least that's how I was taught; please correct me if I'm talking out of my ass thnx.

a track in mono sounds horrible. the only thing you want in mono are the bass frequencies. i use stereo widening when i master (multiband stereo widener) and put low band in mono. for the highs, i push them and they have to be wide, the middle stays the same cause messing with the mids are bad cause the mids are the hardest
You want your track to be mono compatible, that is not the same as the song being in mono. That just means that if it's played on some phone speakers or a dongy speaker that can only play mono sound, it will almost sound the same as if it was in stereo. You dont lose elements if the song is suddenly played in mono instead of stereo.
This is for the most part not an issue anymore as mono speakers are rarely made, except for subwoofers.
Phase coherency is another. Simply put, making sure that frequencies from the right speaker dont cancel out frequencies from the left. Bass frequencies easily does this as the soundwaves are longer than of those higher up in the frequencies.
Simply put, you want your SUB bass to be almost completely mono. Anything below 100 - 80hz since these frequencies usually goes to a subwoofer that plays in mono. This is usually a key rule in EDM, it's mixed differently in other genres.
Get your self a vectorscope, there's plenty of decent free plugins that will help you keeping your phase coherency in check.

Mono compatibility is idd a thing because bad stereo imaging could lead to for instance your main vocal completely disappearing from the track when u play it in mono. But Massivecarcrash already mentioned it. However; if you DJ as well, and you sometimes want to play a remix or whatever in the club; most systems in clubs are mono, and your tracks with very sophisticated mid-side EQ and fairy dust effects will sound muddy and messy and will just make you want to cry. So if you plan to play your tracks in the club at some point; please pay extra attention to mono compatibility, maybe even do a full review of the track in actual mono to check out what's different about it compared to the stero version. Oh and keep sub frequencies (everything below 80 hz-ish) in mono, regardless where it's going to be played.

when luke says the advantage of using the sends and returns is that you can EQ and side chain the reverb but can't you do that on the group channel as well? Isn't the Group track the same as a bus???
yeah but when you eq the group you will Eq what ever is in that group....with the sends and return he can EQ just the reverb separately without affecting the actual dry signal of what he is putting the reverb on.
dynamic effects like eq and compression is on the actually channel strip and you do reverbs and time based effects like delays on sends. what sucks is my program fl studio does not let you. what is good with sends and groups is you can finetune reverb

I think the 3 compressors on the master chain are compressing the 3 bands. Lows, mids, and highs. Ha!
