I enjoy the BB's because its about determination, religion and adventure. Ive almost finished my Queens badge, ill be glad to finish, but i will certainly miss the past 12 years that have been amazing. Ive been to camps at Whithaugh and Glenshee. I had to switch companies because of mums death, but i stuck with it. Done many exciting activities football, climbing, canoeing, abseiling, hillwalking, teamwork, vaulting, cross country, jogging-around-the-hall, dodgeball, made great friends along the way, had new life experiences to savour. I was part of Glasgow 95th, currently at 1st Polmont

I have never understood the purpose of having Boys Brigade, other than it is an integral part of British tradition; particularly British church tradition among the church-going youth. Perhaps someone from the Boys Brigade can help fill me in (like Craig David 😁😁)
But in all seriousness, I happen to be a Christian, and i’ve tried to do some digging myself about BB. I appreciate in concept that then Lieutenant Sir William Alexander Smith tried to address when he created Boys Brigade in regards to developing “Christian Manliness” (though i am curious how he would’ve define “Christian Manliness”).
However, based on the content of this promo video, i really don’t understand BB’s relevance to today’s UK society.
@1:57 teamwork & team-building? Why isn’t this taught in school? @2:11 life skills? I suppose knowing how to tie various knots and being able to set up a tent & maintaining your camp is A form of life skills, but so is being able to change a tire, how to change a light bulb (don’t underestimate how many young people are unable to do that simple task), being proficient in simple first aid & CPR, or even getting a drivers license & able to drive. Boost confidence? Doesn’t confidence come with having experience with whatever it is you are trying to have confidence in? And in terms of any particular youth gaining confidence through experience, doesn’t that start with the family; the parents of the child or youth not being overbearing & overly protective & allow their son to experience things (like taking part in extracurricular activities)?
@2:23 getting the Queens Badge will be on your CV for life? The only part is that when you get into the adult world & get into the workforce, no employer will give a shit about what you did in high school let alone the fact that you got a Queens Badge back then. It may count as extracurricular credit if you are trying to get into college or join the military as an enlisted, but that’s about it. Your menial labor employer who only require a high school diploma for his employees couldn’t care less about your Queen’s Badge if it is not relevant to the job you are applying for. Even having an Ivy League college degree won’t guarantee you a job (has been for more than the past 10 years). Your Oxford degree at best might get you a foot in the door for the company your trying to join, but not as impressive as your internship in the company you did as a college student, provided you impressed your internship employer at the time. So not how much having a Queens Badge from BB would matter on your CV in the long run.
And the comments from the staff; especially this Sir Alex Ferguson guy, responsibility? Leadership? Discipline? Behavior? Isn’t this things that should be instilled among young people in the homes with a strong father figure? Unless if most of these boys that join BB have absentee fathers, why is BB filling that role?
So as a Christian myself, on one hand i would like to see Christian organizations like BB do well. But on the other hand, from an entrepreneur perspective (unless someone from BB can fill me in on what i’m missing) i don’t see how BB; at least the way it’s being runned right now, is relevant to the social climate of today’s society; unless you’re telling me that the UK education system doesn’t provide alot of extracurricular activities opportunities for students, which is why BB needs to fill that role. But that would say more about the UK education system (which does indeed have a reputation of being quite backwards) than the necessity of BB.
