Both terms are not that accurate and are mostly close to 陰キャ by association, the most defining factors of the Japanese word are social anxiety and gloomy outlooks on life due to said difficulties with social expectations. The same people just tend to also be nerds, geeks, introverts, to the point if you are getting made fun of for playing video games instead of some normal people thing like watching sports on TV (like nerdgeekintroverts typically do) it's basically going to be because the activity is tied to people with low social adaptation.
Last I heard, words like inkya and youkya were slang terms describing gloomy and sunny personality dispositions. I don't doubt that inkya overlap with introvertedness, it's just that inkya also tends to have a defeatist attitude baked in (they're inkya because they're downers). In the Bocchi the Rock anime they make a point of making a distinction between the protagonists being bocchi (all alone, lonely) and her new friend being hitorizuki (a loner who likes being alone), but the loner sure sounds like an introvert thriving on me-time more than they sound like an inkya. In a classroom setting you probably don't want the other kids to be calling you inkya either, but comparatively there's nothing inherently wrong with being called an introvert. Never did any decisive googling about it, but I've always found it interesting how inkya and youkya use "in" and "you" like "yin" and "yang". I'm sure they use different kanji, though, maybe it's like sun (positive, light) and moon (negative, dark) or something. But yeah, while nerd might stand out as a choice translation, it does convey the sort of "unfavorable position in the classroom/social life" vibe that inkya has going for it.
Expecting a confessional to be somewhere where people treat you nicely is a mistake. the whole point of a confessional is to get you to talk about how much of a bad person you are(according to some made up rules) and thereby get you to remind yourself about how bad of a person you are. The trick being that talking about stuff like that gives you short term relief in exchange for long term self loathing ...
