- To celebrate Native American Heritage Month we turn to the wisdom of Oren Lyons. Watch, share and check out the second part of this series.
About: The history of the nations indigenous to North America and the burgeoning United States is one that is widely unknown. In order to uncover the entangled roots of the colonial settlers and the First Peoples of this land, Children of the Setting Sun convened indigenous knowledge keepers to speak on the subject.
The stories that emerged reveal indigenous values, beliefs and lifeways as they were pre-contact and as they are today. We begin with Oren Lyons, a Faithkeeper for the Onondaga Nation of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy located in modern day upstate New York.
Assigned by his elders to go out into the world to fight for the rights of his people, Oren has taken his teachings all the way to the United Nations, where he was pivotal in the creation of the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous People’s (UNDRIP).
In revealing the traditions of his people, Oren emphasizes the need to know the history in order to understand the current terms of a nation-to nation relationship as described by their treaty with the US government.

I come across for the first time and I really respect and love it. I understand what he said about our mother earth and being Indegineous tribe. I am from North East of India, imphal, manipur, we still preserve our forefathers religion. We believe in the name of sun and the moon, the mother earth🙏🙏🙏

To live in the Onondaga region, with so much indigenous culture is humbling, and makes me understand the historical pride , prominence, and importance of these great people. The Onondaga should be a point of pride for those who care about democracy, and fighting to preserve cultural values.
Mr. Oren Lyons is one of the most intelligent, wise and articulate men alive today.
HE has the character to be a leader unlike our current/past excuses for US presidents!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you come from the Seneca which is matrilineal- nation, your Mother inherits land rights, i.e. legal Land ownership rights.
That must mean that you have great responsibility towards you mothers sisters children, and your own sisters children where you have a father relationship in educating and supporting them.
If you then change and become a member of the Onondaga Nation, even if your become a member of their Wolf Clan, you have taken your fathers Nations identity ( Onondaga) and by so doing so have changed the Rules of the Iroquois Matrilineal code. If this behavior is repeated by others the Unique Matrilineal Family and Clan system will fall apart and the strong equality between males and female will erode further.
Your people have been robbed of their lands by
the Canadian Governments and they are also depriving your people of their rights to develop a safe and just life long learning system of education.
In my understanding by making the transformation from your Onondaga Nation you are helping to undermine the
Unique social economic and cultural traditions
which are based on female inheritance, namely, land rights and the judicial responsibilities of Mother’s Brothers for his Sisters children’s upbringing.
Please let me know if you think that I am incorrect and explain why.

Our culture has long been headed in the wrong direction pursuing values which only served to lead us astray. Chief Lyons has worked for years to awaken us to this truth and we are running out of time.

I cannot express to YOU & YOUR PPL how much I love & I respect you forever & ever. My ancestor was adopted in in the 1730’s to the biggest oldest tribe by the warrior chief & cared for an young boy attacked by bear who later became a Great Chief, among other things. I am so ashamed of the white men who brought us to this day.

I am sure I lose my way. Hourly,daily,monthly,yearly. I live in Europe, Greece where the ancestors left us with a great legacy of wisdom. I resonate with the way of the Indigenous tribes. Whenever I listen to Oren speaking I always remember not forget to lose my way permanently. The struggle is neverending.
